- The Balenciaga Haute Couture collection was the most discussed Haute Couture collection of the year 2022. Demna's second Balenciaga Haute Couture collection saw a moving away from exclusively paying homage to the brand's founder Cristobal Balenciaga, but through it, he has expanded on Balenciaga's original works for a modern age. The most controversial aspect pf the show was having celebrities like Dua Lipa, Kim Kardashian, Nicole Kidman, & Christine Quinn walk down the runway which was seen as tacky and gauche. And to a degree, I agree, but I think there is a deeper business reason for doing it.

I know this takes a lot of research and effort on Luke and his team’s part, but I hope they keep making these in depth fashion house reviews! The shorts don’t give as much as these deep dives do.
Fashion houses need to stop pandering to celebrities to get attention. Use your talents and designs to sell! Not celebrities to endorse you. It negatively affects the brand. Give runway and campaign jobs to models. It is their profession not celebrities.

I have found the recent evolutions of Balenciaga to be very intelligent and dare I say a little campy. From the publicity value of the the more shocking gimp style wetsuits down to the use of celebrity in the haute couture show speaks to the house’s understanding of fashion performance art and it’s honestly much more compelling to me than some other shows from haute couture powerhouses this year.

Honestly I think that presenting pieces on celebs who can’t walk or strategically move their bodies with a particular fabric or cut ends up doing a major disservice to the garments 😞 I’m too distracted with my own laughter and cringing at the awkwardness of these celebs serving “little girl does fashion show in moms heels for grandma” energy 👠👠
it’s exactly how I feel when celebs who aren’t actors try to play major roles in films… it’s not their craft & it’s super cringe ….
I understand a small appearance for comedic effect but they take it too far when they shouldn’t sometimes
But Balenciaga is known for not just putting professional models on their shows, there are all kinds of people there walking around in all sorts of ways so I don't understand this complaint from some of you about Demna putting celebrities on his show. I thought people were used to this new Balenciaga concept by now lol

I dont know anything about high fashion but Luke, I just love your videos. You're so informative, I love your cheeky delivery when something is offending your senses, and against my better nature I'm learning a lot of history about something I never thought I'd even be curious about. You just put out great content about something you clearly deeply love, and I enjoy watching people engage with their passions and share it with others. Fabulous video as always.
I love it when you get technical with the details! I didn't know the history of neoprene and finding out that it was specifically Japanese with the history made it so much easier. Without those details half of the story would be missing.

I don't like Balenciaga that much usually, but you're right, it wasn't horrible. There were a few pieces that I thought were very elegant.

I genuinely think its reinvented the way that couture is conceived. People forget that most couture houses work at a loss because theres no money in it anymore. What Demna did reinvented the way we THOUGHT and EXPERIENCED couture and made it profitable again, which is no mean feat. The whole idea that people are talking about it, good or bad, is quite literally the point

17:30 the thing with keeping records of all couture sales goes even further. Christian Lacroix claimed to have worked on a one-per-look base, if you were the second person who wanted that piece they asked #1 for permission.

This is the content I love that made me subscribe. You’re really one of very very few fashion channels I’ve ever come across that knows anything at all about fashion history. I have never come across one that goes into the depth of detail and explanation of what it is we are looking at that you do. I learned a lot from this and I certainly have more appreciation for the thoughtfulness, the innovation, and the challenges of modern day Haute Couture after watching and listening. I also appreciate how much work goes into these videos. I think we all understand that those finale gowns are not likely to be worn by anyone or if they are, certainly not more than a few people which, in my opinion, makes it even more awkward that they were worn by women who do not know how to walk a runway. I mean if nothing else, this show exhibits in full display, that modelling is not for the faint of heart and it does indeed take skill. I get what you were explaining about the reasons behind having celebrities in the show, but really they should have tackled less daunting pieces. I mean, if the person on the runway can’t navigate a simple room in those garments, it makes it all but impossible for any of us mere mortals to imagine ourselves in them. It ruins the illusion of the moment and takes us out of the story being told. Unless that story is all about a woman teetering, trying not to fall flat on her face in front of an audience of wealthy and influential people whilst she is wrapped in tinfoil. Which is not a very glamorous story …..

The Haute Couture of Balenciaga is intelligent and gorgeous. Horrible is never a word to describe those collections. Always impressed.
I saw those last few dresses and thought "Goya" immediately! good reference, I think. I can see the line of inspiration
"The designer decided to inject more of himself into the sophomore collection" seems like the first description of the first look and first season of AHS💀🌚 not bad for leaving Vêtements.
I’m convinced - it wasn’t that horrible. I do question how authentically he’s updating traditional motifs. It feels like he wants to approach modernity at the expense of Balenciaga’s reputation.

Here's the thing...Haute Couture isn't meant to be for the masses. It's all hand sewn, perfectly fitted to a custom body form of the buyer. I dare say many Balenciaga HC clients still want real feathers and fur. Imagine being the poor soul that has to stitch that horrible fake fur made from petrochemicals. Breathing in all the fuzz produced by shaving the seams. Those coats were truly awful, better fur does exist but may cost more than the real thing. One of the reasons many design houses stopped doing HC is the expense. No sewing machine ever touches HC, every stitch is done by hand. I don't think many celebs would pay for a HC garment, only socialites are willing to get a full season from a House anymore. Hundreds of hours of work go into these and I'm sorry, these were just dreadful. Nothing exciting, nothing to make you smile. That black hosiery was also an awful choice. I'm shutting up now but 1 last thing - Nicole Kidman was straight-up wearing one of thosr emergency blankets that victims of hiking ng accidents wrap up in while waiting to be airlifted out. I think the blankets are better quality. That was just so wrong.

I always liked most of the collection! However, I can’t get past those chunky heels, I hate them with everything inside of me
I'm fascinated by the shoes. I like how they are severe and anatomical. I'm super annoyed that the neoprene looks so latex like, hugging ab contours in the images, and yet so bulky and folding in strange places on the runway.

Well said. Denma is an artist.. when I first saw his spandex looks I vommitted.. but someone from balenciaga team said he is just responding to the culture around him. The rise of sports wear is hard to ignore- denma turned the textile on its head and made ball gowns from it. Do I think it looks attractive? No. Do I appreciate his point of view and disrupting what we class as fashion? Yes.
Awesome to see that he is able to be as creative as he is while still doing great with sales.
I’d say his use of celebrities in shows and campaigns are simply responding to the culture around him too.
Does it benefit balenciaga in the same way it does brands that intentionally use celebs for sales? Sure. But his intentions for the decisions he makes is what sets him apart from the rest.
I’ve loved denma since Vetements, but to see him evolve as much as he has is truly beautiful!

This was fascinating. I have a pair of camper tennis shoes that are neoprene. They are so light and comfortable. They aren't water proof, but they breathe and keep your feet warm even when they get submerged in water. I didn't know how the fabric was manufactured. I love the speaker bag. It's kind of ridiculous, but hey, it's Balenciaga...Demna is so into recycling, I don't get why recycled fur isn't happening. There is so much fur in the world sitting there moldering. And the quality of the furs you could get 50 years ago is much higher than you can get now. I think it would be way more green/eco conscious than plastic-based faux fur and look a lot less cheap as well...Loved the shark dress, but it drove me insane how badly it fit the model in the bust.

@@ChuffedLemon normal people meaning people who view clothes in it’s most utilitarian sense and therefore base their opinions on whether or not they can wear it (which most of the time couture is not “wearable”). i don’t think it’s really pretentious it’s just true that many people who aren’t invested in fashion immediately shut down non-conventional looks 🤷🏻♀️

I’m confused at how making Neoprene skin tight (like it’s general intended wet suit application) is somehow more interesting or worth noticing than the constructed Neoprene pieces by NG at Balenciaga.
I’m old enough to have seen those pieces in person in stores and they were ready to wear pieces of ART.
For couture making skin tight neoprene wet suits is far from a point of interest, skill, or beauty deserving of couture.

I would like to know more about the "responsabilities" a new designer has when they enter a new brand. When you talk about house codes, i understand their importance, but should they be respected at all times only because of the person that created such brand. It amazes me how each brand has an identity and how that identity is the upper hand instead of the designer in chief. Is it always that the designer has to show its creative mind but always playing inside the general aesthetic of the brand, in that case, arent they sacrificing their own aesthetic for it?
Did you know there is a Balenciaga museum in Getaria (his hometown) with original chlothes from Cristobal Balenciaga?
I like Demna's inclusion of celebrities. It feels like a meta acknowledgment that it's all the same spectacle.

It was never horrible, it's an insanely gorgeous show. And honestly, this is why I don't vibe with HauteLeMode as a reviewer at all. If your first thought when seeing handmade neoprene haute couture gowns was "how idiotic", it just shows... you're not qualified to be a voice on this topic? Go watch Bliss Foster instead, someone with an understanding of the history of this stuff.

Our world is always changing and now you have two options either you change with it or you lose.
There is no question that you have to follow the house codes and spirit of the house but you always have to improve and embrace the new ways. I think the collection could have been better but far from that horrible how many people describe it
As a chemical engineering undergraduate, hearing about oil and gas, neoprene and carbon black shocked me a little…. Didn’t expect it! Always appreciate learning with Luke.
