While Indian Army is upgrading is mechanized forces, CRPF deployed in J&K is also upgrading tis fleet of armored vehicles. The induction of Light Category of Bullet Proof Vehicles(LBPV) called Mahindra Marksman into the CRPF came just days after Tata delivered advanced QRFV to the Indian Army.
Last year CRPF has released EOA for the procurement of Light Category of Bullet Proof Vehicles (LBPV), however the exact quantity was not known. As per latest reports, the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Jammu and Kashmir has added Mahindra Marksman armored vehicles to its fleet and same can be seen in the picture.
The Mahindra Marksman APC
The Mahindra Marksman is India’s first armoured capsule-based light bulletproof vehicle which provides protection to the personnel of defence, paramilitary and police forces against small arms fire and grenade attacks. The APC is available in both right-hand drive and left-hand drive and has the capability to be used in counter-terrorist operation, border protection and riot control as well as conventional roles. It can carry 4 soldiers at back and two in front including driver and co-driver.
Protection Level
The APC is a 4X4 wheeled light armoured personnel carrier built on a monocoque design which provides B6 level of ballistic protection. The five-side armouring of passenger compartment (roof and verticals) provide protection against 7.62x51mm NATO ball ammunition and 2x DM 51 grenades. The floor is blast protected against detonation of two DM-51 German ordnance hand grenades or equivalent. Ballistic steel interior frame provides overlap and backup protection for impact areas, such as doors and windows. The rear area protected by armoured swing door featuring view glass and gun port. Heavy-duty door hinges installed to compensate the additional armoured weight of all doors.
Turret & Firing Ports
Mahindra Marksman also has an option of cupola turret machine gun mount with 270* traverse and protection. It also has seven firing ports. A Search light is also mounted on top of the vehicle which can be controlled from inside. Rear view camera and a TV screen has also been provided for the driver and co-driver to see the dead zone behind the vehicle.
Users of Mahindra Marksman
The new armored vehicle from Mahindra will protect CRPF from steel-cored bullets and grenades used by the militants. We have also seen a large number of Mahindra LBPVs deployed by CRPF for special duties in the valley. Besides CRPF, the other users of Mahindra Marksman are Force One of Mumbai Police, Delhi Police, CISF, Jammu and Kashmir Police, and Kolkata Police. Mahindra has also exported 29 Marksman vehicle to the Special Forces of Chile.
