- The great empire state of New York has enacted some wonderful legislation that will most definitely save a lot of lives… Enter the sleep act. New York‘s way of combating all the awful people that put aftermarket exhaust and loud pipes on their cars. This is a ranting video on this terrible legislation. I hate talking politics, but as a car guy this one cut deep. TL, DR: Write your Senators, Legislators, Assembly Men or whoever and let them know this Legislation is poorly worded and needs serious reform. This isn’t about combating loud exhaust…this is a blatant Cash Grab by the State.

its funny to me because i literally got a loud exhaust so i could experience it at low RPMS so i didnt have to drive recklessly to enjoy my car....
As a motorcyclist I find this concerning. Motorcycles have a very narrow profile. Having a bit of exhaust note keeps people aware that there is a motorcycle nearby. Cars that don't see you can hear you. There is a limit however it is undisputable that loud pipes save lives.

How can any shops do an inspections at all with the Raod Salt Infected Trash here in NYS ? I can see us loosing half the shops or more.

No, your incorrect, basically the populous is tired of listening to 100 straight piped Harley's roaring through our neighborhood. Or the super diesel guys who need to roar through the same. I agree 100%
So if those guys are causing problems…they should be the ones dealt with. The whole community shouldn’t be attacked. What about all the other car guys who have aftermarket exhaust that isn’t loud but is now still illegal? What about the car guys who have aftermarket exhaust that aren’t ripping through neighborhoods disturbing the peace? How come there’s no legislation on the guys with big ass subwoofers and speakers… Those are a bigger problem in my area than anybody with loud exhaust. You can’t group every single gearhead into the same group as the idiots that you mentioned.
So target them, I live in the sticks 2 hours from NYC, I have a high dollar build that is now illegal.
I have aftermarket exhaust muffler an cats. It’s a VR6 I respect the fact that it has a certain loudness.
I take the car out a couple times a year. I work my sac off an pay a lot in taxes ! There is no reason why I should now have to worry about taking a ride in my nice car being stopped an potentially be shot or have to go threw potential risk cause some kids in your neighborhood screwed up.

I have a 2022 VW Golf GTI MK8 with a 6spd. I bought a ton of performance, suspension, and transmission upgrades which I will install once one last part arrives. One of the mods I bought/ordered was a Remus non resonated catback exhaust with gloss black tips. But I wound up putting it up for sale after watching a similar video that a guy posted that lives in NYC around a 8 weeks ago. The exhaust is still boxed up in 5 different boxes. I ordered it back in Feb but it was on back order and it arrived 5 weeks ago. By the time I found out about this new law I couldnt cancel the order. I figured Id sell it to someone with a VW Golf GTI MK8 quick since this exhaust is hard to get. I live on Long Island but drive into brooklyn everyday. And the exit I get off at already has a speed camera and red light camera. if you turn right and drive 200 yards there is another speed camera. Drive half a mile there is another speed camera. Within a 1 mile radius there are least 20 speed cameras and a few red light cameras. Plus the neighborhood is by the water will lots of restaurants and lots of cars and motorcycles with exhausts. I have aftermarket exhausts on my Ducati, 2 BMW motorcycles and on my Harley. But I figured out what to do with them. I ended up ordering the Armytrix exhaust for my car. You can open and close the valves to adjust the sound. It comes with two fobs that you can use to open or close the valves. Or you can run the additional wiring that come with the exhaust into the driver area. Then use bluetooth to connect to your phone and you open and close the valves that way. It also comes with a odbeleven type of module you plug in and can make some minor adjustments.
When the valves are closed the exhaust still sounds great but the DBs are actually slightly lower than stock. When you open the valves it screams. You can also set it up so the valves open at a certain rpm and close at a certain rpm. My buddy got a ticket in the mail. He went to get the car inspected. But he closed the valves for the inspection. Once the car was tested and passed the sound test. The ticket was dismissed. Its an expensive exhaust. But well worth the price so that you dont have to keep removing you aftermarket exhaust and putting the stock exhaust when you go get inspected if you get a ticket. Especially if you work in an area like me that has speed and red light cameras everywhere. And Im hearing that these sound monitors will be installed in a few places in that area pretty soon.

After having found out this afternoon the status of what was happening. I did not know this was getting passed. I live in Albany NY an this was a real hush thing that went down sure it was in nyc but I’m pretty sure they did that at a point where everyone was in pandemic an really couldn’t defend the fact that there is a great car community of car people who do respect the fact that yea it is loud . I respect the fact that it’s loud I don’t take it out late an I don’t take it out early. So as not to disturb ppl
I’m a car guy I have an MK4 R32 an I have quite a bit of money into my build. I have an after market exhaust with cats 🐱 it’s a vr6 it’s loud with a stock exhaust.
But needless to say there’s a many reasons y this sucks an y I have to agree with you on banning together to rewrite this.
I read something about it last year, but they were very vague and what the laws would include. It wasn’t until April 1 when the law took a fact that I really found out the extent of how bad it was. The state is horrible and yet this is another way of stupid politicians cracking down on regular people. This is just a quick cash grab.
@@wjye can’t agree more, I’m in contact with someone from the senate, I think the law is very vague, I think it left to law enforcements discretion would allow for a mess. I think there needs to be some type of change. I don’t wanna have to drive my car an be scared out of my mid that all an every cop is gonna harass. Think there needs to be a gathering quite honestly

We already have laws enforcing off road exhaust for people that straight pipe or run open headers. just go after them. Stupid law. booo!!!!!!!
Agreed. I’ve found some new info on this legislation that I should discuss. I’ll be doing an update on it.
The law is very open to interpretation. California law is more specific. If you have a LEO waking up at the wrong side of the bed,,,, you are screwed if you get pulled over.
All that I know is the state of NY loves to emulate California so it’s absolutely no surprise that NY enacted this law. But you’re correct, the NY law is terribly written.

Motorcycle? This legislation is absolutely stupid. If I was you, I’d put the factory pipes back on for inspection then after it passes out the aftermarket back on
@@wjye No can do...will try to pack the exhaust to slip inspection. 90% of H-Ds on the road have aft.mkt. pipes....What are they doing?..How many keep their stock pipes?? It's awful quiet out my way. Other than stock pipes,...it will be a challenge to burn this. But, the question is: Why do we allow politicians to rule over us?.....After all THEY work for US!!!...(Regardless of where the envelope came from)

My part of NY does not have decibel readers
So I definitely need to do an update video on this. Some pretty big information sources about this law were publishing False information and much of what we thought, never made it into the law
I got pulled over with my rear window tint and straight piped 300c V8..The cops is nice enough to gave me a Driver view obstruction ticket instead of the straight piped and tint (my mask is hanging on my rearview mirror)
And will the cops be able to tell me the stock decibel level of my truck is? Think of all the lost tax revenue from the shops that are gonna shut down.
I believe the cops will be issued decibel meters for that purpose. This terrible law is gonna hurt a lot of good business.
