- New York state lawmakers are moving to put the brakes on excessive car noise. A bill takes aim at the loud exhaust made by souped-up cars; CBS2's Tony Aiello reports.

Some noise is necessary and provides a purpose. The noisy vehicles they are discussing don't have a purpose making noise and would actually desensitize people for when an actual emergency siren is going off.

This is the dumbest law I ever heard. Out of all things that happen in the state of New York, robberies, people getting killed almost every day, sexual assault, rape, etc… The New York State government decides to focus of modified exhaust🤦♂️ This will barely have an effect in the city of New York. Trains, buses, trucks, people, crackheads, people blasting music will still be an issue although this law is passed. Look I have a modified exhaust system on my car and it’s the only reason why I get pulled over, and I already have gotten a ticket from it literally 3 days after owning my drivers license. The state of New York just sees that we have a lot of car enthusiasts here and make it a way to drain our pockets from the most stupidest law in the world. Honestly I think this law is way too restrictive. If the state of New York was going to restrict modified exhaust, I would most rather have it like the way California has it, which is to have the sound of the exhaust under a certain number of decibels or just remove the crackle tunes which is what bothers people the most. I understands it sounds so cool but i would most rather let that pops and bangs tune go rather than getting a ticket for a modded exhaust😭 Welcome to New York where the most blinded government is from👍

Many kids from the high school I went to took out the mufflers of their cars and I have no idea why they view that as “cool.” It’s completely ridiculous. I have what I consider a very nice car, a 2021 Jeep Compass and I think it looks sleek. I’m not a car enthusiast btw. It’s also very fuel efficient and never in my mind did I even consider taking out the muffler to make it as loud as possible.
I drive an 02 Mustang GT and I like my car to be loud because it’s sort of a classic-style car and when you think of mustangs you think of a nice growly V8. I guess it just varies by the person

In Boston, MA the cops just totally ignore the problem, like they can't hear it. But, then, they have more important things to do like locating the nearest Dunkin Donuts. Or setting up street barriers for the next "peaceful protest".

Its a modification that the car community loves. When you are building a car a free flow exhaust helps when you are looking for horsepower. I can understand what you mean when you talk about disturbance but a lot of these cars that pop and bang, are tuned and most tunes have the capability to reset the ecu to factory tune if needed. Honestly i think putting up signs in certain neighborhoods would be a better possible solution in my opinion. Having this passed as a law affects many car enthusiasts and probably won’t succeed in stopping the noise.

Every night can’t sleep cause they be racing and it sounds like cannons going off like a war . Hope they enforce it eliminate that for good . One of the problems is some " mufflers " are designed to make the exhaust more raspy and harsh. As long as there is something that looks like a muffler, it passes since shops generally don't have any way to measure sound levels or quality.
Put the queit muffler on and prep the car for inspection. After u get inspection, put the loud one back on. Repeat come inspection time.
