That is the delicious irony of the whole thing. I listened to this song for decades and never noticed the cowbell until after this skit. I love how they emphasize the cowbell when so many like myself didn't even notice it. This is great.

Actually the official version barely has any. It's there, but just barely noticeable. Still, I love the song and the skit. Even the band was dumbfounded when they found out about the skit being based around it with it being so quiet.

I just ran into Will Ferrell 2 nights ago at a restaurant. My band was eating at restaurant before our show and Will comes in. I went out to my trailer, dug out my cowbell from my drum kit, and Will signed it! Then played my show with signed cowbell from Will.

Don't Fear the Reaper is a great song. Per Wikipedia:
Released as an edited single (omitting the slow building interlude in the original), the song is Blue Öyster Cult's highest chart success, reaching #7 in Cash Box and #12 on the Billboard Hot 100 in late 1976. Critical reception was positive and in December 2003 "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" was listed at number 405 on Rolling Stone's list of the top 500 songs of all time.[4]

Blue Oyster Cult is a real band from Long Island. They were moderately successful with this song being their biggest hit. The people on stage are not the group. They are SNL cast members. When they were preparing for a tour, they would often play at local Long Island clubs as "Soft White Underbelly." So they wouldn't draw big crowds. But everyone knew their alter name so that became ore of a joke than good in practice. The lead singer Eric Bloom is Howard Sterns cousin. He is also from Long Island. Christopher Walkin played the record producer. He is infamously known for being on the boat with Robert Wagner and Natalie Wood when she mysteriously drowned after a night of drinking.

They did a great job recreating the look of each Blue Öyster Cult band member at the time, but their positions and names are changed. The guy in front really looks like lead guitarist Buck Dharma but is called by the name "Eric". Eric Bloom is the lead singer of the group and Will Ferrell, with the hair, the beard and the sunglasses looks very much like the real Eric Bloom. The drummer looks just like BÖC keyboardist Allen Lanier, but is called "Bobby", perhaps because at the time this sketch was made BÖC's drummer was Bobby Rondinelli. The one in the printed shirt with the black guitar should be on drums because he looks just like drummer Albert Bouchard. Finally, the one in the leather jacket looks, I think, the least like the person he's portraying, the brother of Albert Bouchard, bass guitarist Joe Bouchard. And I don't know, but I have heard that Christopher Walken, who is called Bruce Dickinson, is actually doing an impression of Blue Öyster Cult's original manager, Sandy Pearlman.
Aside from all that, this is a great sketch. I love it that Jimmy Fallon can't even LOOK at Will Farrell without breaking character. He's trying not to laugh so hard he's constantly hiding his face.

I, for real, hope deep in my soul the next thing you did with your life was to go review Don't Fear the Reaper on your music channel.

Really gotta check out "Cork Soakers". It's one of the best SNL skits.

Christopher Walken as the producer, Will Farrell in a tiny shirt on the cowbell, "Don't Fear the Reaper" by Blue Oyster Club = Funny!

Oh man, didn't watch it for a while. Classic. OK, peak SNL was long gone that time (Belushi, Aykroyd, Murray, Chase....), but still shined once in a while and this was hilarious. Nowadays....oh well.

I can't hear this song without the cowbell. It feels incomplete.

True story Christopher Walken said that this skit was the thing he regretted most in his career because he can't even go to a Italian restaurant and order spaghetti without the waiter/waitress asking him if he would like more cowbell with that. He also dislikes Will Ferrell because of this and kinda blames him for it.
