It doesn't surprise me that you like Key without liking his character. He and Peele are so charismatic and good writers as well. I suggest you check out one of their whole episodes. They often introduce the clips with some background about how they got the idea or whatever and I think you would really appreciate seeing them out of character.

I think you're missing the importance of the inner-city thing, where the first sketch is basically playing on the stereotype of some of the strange names black parents give their kids. The stereotype played on in the second sketch is that an inner-city school isn't going to have the budget for its students to participate in the sort of extra-curricular activities that a suburban middle class school does.
Yeah, I take it as the opposite side of the coin from the East/West Bowl skits. The substitute isn't so much making fun of black names as he is making fun of _white_ substitutes who come to the inner city and don't realize many students really do have unique names. East/West Bowl is where K&P actually poke fun at the names themselves.

I didn't think the names were that difficult but the 3 girls celebrated when I said their names right. Apparently other subs were forever getting their names wrong. Then I told them how Zoey is supposedly a difficult name to pronounce some times and how I get called Chloe a lot even when people look right at my name. The girls questioned how stupid people are and I explained I don't think it has to do with people being stupid just not paying attention as much as they could, but it made this skit even more funny when my friends found it and sent it to me.

Practically none of our most common names have any direct link to the English language we speak. Most are from Hebrew and Greek and contain letter combinations you find very few other places. The AE in Michael, for example. It's crazy how we give people a hard time for their name when most all of our names are crazy in the context of American English.

I taught for five years. Two were in an inner city school. I came across a lot of African-American students with names I couldn’t pronounce. BUT - funnily enough, I went to work in a more suburban area after, and I would mispronounce the white names with AA pronunciations, because I was used to those, at that point. Craziest name I saw was Nyquel. I was like “NyQuil?” (Like the medicine) and dude got pissed. “My name is Nigel.” That name’s spelling DID NOT realistically, in any way, spell the British name Nigel And the people commenting about the satire in the second sketch, saying that inner city schools dont have clubs…. They’re wrong. Inner city schools have clubs. They just don’t have the funds for sports. You should react to some of his Coach Hines skits from MadTV. My head cannon is that this character is Coach Hines after he faked his death and went on the run because he finally murdered every student at his old school.

So I went to a continuation high school and I laughed SO HARD when I watched this as an adult. Teachers really can be like this and there's a reason why we went through so many substitute teachers. Eat of be eaten man, just cause you get expelled as a teenager doesn't mean you aren't in some kind of school. To be fair though, when you get a good teacher it's like a Godsend. This was one of the funniest bits ever done. How the teacher got more and more pissed at the students for using "silly-ass names". A-A-Ron and Jay Quellin is now the ONLY way to pronounce their names! I can only imagine how he'd pronounce MY name Michael. Would it be "Mitch-Heel" ?. Lol.

So I went to a continuation high school and I laughed SO HARD when I watched this as an adult. Teachers really can be like this and there's a reason why we went through so many substitute teachers. Eat of be eaten man, just cause you get expelled as a teenager doesn't mean you aren't in some kind of school. To be fair though, when you get a good teacher it's like a Godsend. It's a rough crowd at times but if you can hold your ground and learn to listen, kids that were considered menaces to society come out wanting to give life a real go. It's sobering
