Honestly some of the things NPCs say are so brilliantly unexpected and unhinged.
I was doing “parkour” in Saint Denis as Arthur, jumped on a roof near the stables. Someone on the ground went “has he been possessed by the devil or somethin’?” To their friend and I just thought it was fantastic 😂 the game really anticipated me making Arthur do weird things 💀

One of the details that always made the npcs of the rdr2 world feel alive is the wedding bands you can loot from bodies. Always hurt my soul a little knowing they were never going back to whatever family they had. Again, it’s not like they are real or that their families exist, but it gave me a sense of human value for the npcs that meant I never randomly went on killing sprees for the heck of it, unlike every other game that tries to stop you from being a mass murderer by having town guards or what have you, simply to make doing so too difficult so you wouldn’t break the game

In so many games the main quest is just this dull string of missions to get you weapons, with a few robotic npcs to help you along the way with exposition dumps and usually bad facial animations.
Rdr2 and the GTA games genuinely put so much life into the characters around you that you never think of them as "that npc i can do X with), but rather as thinking living people with motives beyond your own.

5:18 I had the exact same encounter. I just randomly saw a guy out by a fire and I’ll often approach strangers if they don’t tell me to get lost, he seemed nice so I sat and listened to what he had to say. After he slumped over after talking to him I got concerned so I pointed my gun at him and thankfully it was red. He was alive. It’s funny how after just one conversation I was worried about this man’s health and checked up on him, that’s the kind of game Rockstar made, the kind of game where you can grow an attachment to a character whether it’s been 5 minutes or 5 hours.

The way the npcs act just have something so human to them, whether it be what they say, how they say it, or whatever it is, it just feels real. Dude I've been saying that for awhile too! To really enjoy the game you need to play at a realistic pace. If you fly as fast as you can here and there you make it feel like any other game. Slow down. Move realistically. You become immersed. You watch the world become alive around you. You notice all the beauty and detail they worked incredibly hard on. You feel the loneliness in the wilderness. You feel the crazy difference of the big city life in St Denis.
One time after saving Jack and partying with the gang, I stayed up drinking with Pearson. We sat by the fire and he started singing a song about his time in the Navy. It started to rain and he started tearing up... We had a moment that almost felt real lol. Slow down and be realistic and this game will reward you for it!

Played RDR1 way back when it was new. Loved it back then, but by the time RDR2 came out, I didn't have a rig capable of running it and kinda forgot about it. When I got a new PC last year, I finally bought it, played through the first chapter, liked everything about it, particularly how the characters stood out and were memorable, but then I got super busy and forgot about it again. Picked it up again last week and started over and wow... once the world opens up, this game is AMAZING. There is literally nothing revolutionary about the gameplay, everything has been done before, but RDR2 does it to perfection on every single parameter, especially when it comes to immersion and building a believable world. By far the most important aspect are the NPCs - these are absolutely perfect all around - with incredible variety and diversity in characters, all of whom are interesting, funny or tragic often caught in true dilemmas that make you think really hard about the right course of action. The amount of little details are astounding. The way that each new place you arrive give you little scripted conversations to listen in on (if you want, I very much appreciate hacing only the missions use cutscenes) consersations that present the unique characteristics and issues of the place and set the tone of the stories being told here. Then there is the way that NPC smalltalk constantly reference recent events in the story missions and choices you made - chef's kiss. The amount of recorded dialogue is insane, the only place where I notice significant repeating of dialogue was when playing the minigames (poker etc) which is to be expected.
Then there is the dynamic way NPCs react to you and your actions. The simple fact that you improve people's perception of you by greeting them as you pass by and can turn a town that was initially hostile to you around to where people are pleasant and kind (or vice versa). The different reactions to you doing crimes or stepping outside the general norms are so lifelike it actually makes me think twice about committing any crime at all. On top of that it all runs beautifully smooth. I have literally not seen a major glitch or inconsistency involving NPCs after a week of daily playtime - that's impressive.
I'm so impressed that I have not yet sucvumbed to the temptation to go murder hobo or deliberately try to mess with the AI, and I have honestly come to care deeply for many of the characters, even minor ones.
I can honestly say, I've never seen a game handle NPCs so well. I have seen more complex NPCs handle huge dialogue trees and the like, but I have never seen a game handle so many relatively simple NPCs and have it create such an incredibly believable experience.

rdr2 is one of the games where even in story mode you don't feel too lonely.
And the wildlife, all animals are full npcs with goals; hunting, scavenging, avoiding humans, playing... The dogs remember you if you're kind to them.

Woah. Thank you for such an in depth take on learning about empathy through Red Dead. The topics feel so relevant and as games teach us / or reflect us, they have an incredible opportunity to direct a considerable mass of humans towards a more caring world. Your video here, clearly shows this. Grateful for your efforts and thoughts. May we all be better Players 1s in our lives.

The thousands of voice actors really add to the realism..i never have stumbled on somebody who had duplicate voice..like in other games..and people rly seems real..and your actions good or bad have consequences..i love this game..and honestly on my fourth playtrough and i still cant go for the money at the end ...i just have to help John because it feels right

ive played about 700 hours of pretty much campaign only (i really love the campaign) and the NPCS are certainly my favorite thing. sure, there are nicer things to do/look at, such as the scenery or going robbing and killing. but NPCs are all so different!!! i never ever know what to expect, will they be mean, will they be nice, will they strike up a convo or even a whole interaction? love this video

Wow this video started as a simple breakdown of the civilians in Rdr2 but then turned into a meaningful video. My mom says Red Dead is bad for me and it encourages me to do bad things even though all I ever do is good in the game. How is donating money to a charity bad? How is helping a widow survive on her own and grieve the loss of her husband bad? How is getting a disabled man his horse back bad? How is looking after Johns ranch and treating his family well bad? This game is a lot deeper than older generations make it out to be. It isn’t just a simple trash game like GTA. It’s meaningful and impactful. All the games I play are. The Last of Us. Red Dead. God of War. Spider-Man. Black Flag.

Oi kid don’t disrespect GTA by calling it simple trash… what even?
you’re born too late to understand why GTA is one of the greatest franchises in gaming… keep an open mind and remember it’s made by Rockstar… they earned their reputation through GTA not red dead. You love Red Dead, you’ll love GTA too; yea it’s not complicated because it’s from 2013 but it still beats every other open world game…. maybe you just need to grow up

I think GTA being a bit trashy and dirty is on purpose. I kind of talk about it in this video but perhaps I should make a full video about it. But you’re right a lot of people unfortunately don’t understand the more meaning elements of some games

i originally had a part about how even your horse dying is a big emotional moment but sadly had to cut it for pacing. Making the player sympathize with animals is something many games do but Red dead 2 makes me want to go vegan lol

You also forgot how to mention how Arthur's honor level can contrast with his selfishness. Like that one mission with Rains Fall, Arthur already knows his fate if he has high honor, only seeming to care about the people around him and not himself. But if he has low honor, he says that he knows a place that could potentially assolve his TB, only caring for himself in the process.

Yeah people constantly misunderstand the morals of the story when playing games, they see games like this and think "Oh it's just a game about slaughtering people" and ignore the real meaning, rdr2 is an amazing story that showcases how good and bad is subjective, not black and white, that no matter how far gone you think you are, you can always try to redeem yourself. It encourages "good behaviour" even though you have the possibility to commit the most heinous crimes and Arthur showcases the importance of self awareness and taking responsibility for your actions (not by others standard's, he obviously avoids jail or ending up in a California Collar but I mean personal responsibility).

The best reason in my opinion to get your honor as high as you can as early as you can is that everything costs significantly less in the game when you need to buy stuff, especially in the general store. Also when you have issues like you try to get on your horse and a nearby NPC is too close (especially in Saint Denis lol) and you end up choking them, but you let go. If your honor is high you got a better chance of just being told to leave the area opposed to be chased and shot down

Hello friend this is a great video, I love this game the online and story mode are unmatched in the open-world genre Rockstar knows how to create amazing worlds and I can't wait to see how they improve on the formula in GTA 6 and hopefully Red Dead 3.
Arthur and the people around him feel so real you don't feel like a main character you feel like a person in the world.

In the epilogue, once all the random encounters have run out, the humans feel so bland.
They just roam around, say hi.
Outside of cities you only encounter people who either get really mad and try to kill you when you greet them, or just greet you back and leave.
None of those like "my horse died! I need help!"
    Just so bland.
Tbf I've been playing on my first playthrough for like 500 hours.

One time during chapter 6 i got ambushed by the murfree broods near camp and they spooked my horse, went into the woods where they could have more cover and its like they expected me to follow them into the woods which i did so I fell into their man hole in which they went to check whether i died or not. This encounter made me a bit scared of the aggresive npcs afterwards since i didn't expect them to be this smart

I get the sonder thing, I always like to imagine the other gang members going off completing their own separate stranger side quests, whether they be honourable or not. I mean, Dutch even mentions he went fishing with that guy who was going to give them the fishing boat to get to Bronte, and he's always mentioning the people he knows, I'm sure Dutch was as prolific with side quests as Arthur was
