“Once you work for yourself you have twice as much of problems.” Yes!!
So true in many ways. I’m so fortunate to be working for myself doing my special interest. I don’t have the anxiety of sending out resumes, anxiety-building interviews, or being worries I’ll be fired. At the same time, I have no health insurance, have to act as the secretary, custodian, bookkeeper, marketer, buyer, & provider of care.
Because of my aspieness, ADHD, & OCD, i need things done specifically, so hiring people is out of the picture. It’s so much work & it’s very difficult to stay motivated, but would not have it any other way. :) Thanks for sharing your wonderful videos!! 💗

It is good to know that it's possible to do it all on my own (since you do). I don't have benefits at work and make minimum wage. I have been feeling overwhelmed at work to the point where I almost had a minor meltdown in front of one of my coworkers. I was feeling emotional, hyperventilating (but she calmed me down before I could start crying), feeling shaky, and my voice was wavering with emotion and panic. Now I fear for losing my job, because you're not supposed to let it show when you are overwhelmed at work (as what I learned at previous jobs). I put too much pressure on myself to finish our daily list of tasks, even when my supervisor tells me that it's okay if I miss one. In my mind, I want to be as good as her at my job, and that can make me incredibly stubborn and stressed out.

Oh, man. I could write a book on this. I own a store, and it's a store involving my special interest which is vintage clothing. I have a degree in entrepreneurial studies and costuming, and I'm very good at what I do. BUT the people side is SO HARD FOR ME. I am such a direct person and I cannot read between the lines of what people are saying to me, so I have to ask questions and the customers think I'm being rude or difficult. I cannot tell when people are being serious or joking, and often get offended because I misunderstand what people are saying, as if they're intending to hurt or embarrass or confuse me on purpose. I end up getting bad reviews online because of it and it absolutely destroys me every time. I'm not trying to be mean, it's virtually impossible for me to be fake nice and I don't even know how to do it without feeling completely insecure. I feel like I'm pretending a lot when I interact with humans in public. I cannot respond to online reviews saying "I'm on the spectrum and come off very harsh and blunt and I'm sorry." I do sometimes explain it's my personality and that I am doing my best to be helpful, but the damage is already done. I realized the solution for me was to hire a person to handle customer interactions in person and I can focus more on all of my other business owner responsibilities which I'm very good at. Luckily, my strengths lie in organization, therefore I am very much on top of everything else. I think each autistic person needs to find their strengths and weaknesses when owning a business and hire people that complement your weaknesses with their strengths so you have a well-rounded team. I don't mean to ramble but I feel like this could help someone who wants to start a business but has issues interacting with strangers or the general public. The unpredictability of human interactions can be debilitating some days, I completely get it.

You missed the single biggest pro for running my own business, for me personally anyway, a chance to work and get paid without having to pass an interview. I would love a 9-5 job but I just cannot pass an interview. I owned my own business for four years servicing charity sweet boxes and I find your pro list funny though, because it wasn't my passion, it was a franchise, so couldn't really be that flexible and I was not suited for it, non of my main skills and obsessions matched with it. Although it was rewarding, but that was mostly just because I was helping people, actually working and being productive and earning my money.

      Ok. Good to hear!
I didn't think of that because most of my jobs haven't come through interviews. :)

I cannot pass an interview because of the phone tests about honesty... I'm honest on them but everyone always tells me "you're supposed to lie, everyone does." IT MAKES NO SENSE TO ME at all whatsoever! And don't get me started on auditions for things! Ah!

    • @Anonymous-wh4ez
      @Anonymous-wh4ez Рік тому

Yes! Doing so badly in interviews was finally explained by realising I'm autistic.
A plus point: the business I started wasn't too demanding and still ticked over even when I was shut down or burned out.

I just basically figured out I have ASD, and I started my own 3d-printing and design business. It fits super well with my personality, but most of what you're saying is pretty spot on. Business is a huge thing though, and there's almost limitless possibilities.

There's still many senior people in rural regions who haven't learnt the internet. I used to run ads in our local paper to help them sell their stuff, vehicles, boats etc. First time I advertised, I sold a lady's 1954 Bentley - overnight on eBay. I made $3000! But it was hard to keep getting work after that - but it can be done.

I'm curious about why you are not doing UA-cam $$$. The commercials are short and, in my opinion, not obtrusive. I am extremely willing to watch a commercial in order to obtain the information that I seek. I love several Aspies and your videos help me immensely. It also and means a great deal to the Aspies that I love that I'm trying to understand them. I'll gladly watch a couple of commercials for those results. Obviously, what you believe is best for you is paramount. But I'd like you to know that I'm ok watching a few commercials so that you can help us NTs love the Aspies in our lives.

I find the instability of working for my self is better than the stress of working under someone. I do auto repair work and have gather the tools needed to do the work over the years on a needs basis, some them can be rented. not sure on whether there is more risk but chassing faulty parts can be annoying, I can pick and chose the work I want to take on. having good people skill could be plus but am highly laking there so I just let the quality of my work sell its self. I can stick to a handfull of customers and not have too many new faces to deal with often. doing things this way can be a lot slower but I would rather not be rushing for I can still end the race with my sanity. you say I would need support but I wing it most the time, there have been times were I have had someone to help sell work. you do need to learn what your work is worth tho and try not to under bid yourself too often.

People skills are definately something I need to work at, but I've found that one of the biggest problems with working at large companies isn't so much that, but that a lot of communication is done through middle men.

Could you do a video about how to turn your special interests into a business? I have a lot of skills that I would like to make a career out of, but I don't know how to use them for that purpose.

One day I would love to create some kind of entrepreneur hub for people on the spectrum who have incredible ideas but not the business skills to make it work. There is so much potential there!

Aspergers from the Inside That would be awesome! It seems like other people somehow "just know" things about the business world, and they expect me to know too, but I don't know how I'm supposed to know if no one tells me. It would be really beneficial to have something like that, especially coming from another person on the spectrum that has a better understanding of how we "work."

Thanks for your insight! Would you say that your ability to succeed in self-employment is largely determined by your capacity for executive functioning? I feel like there is so much more executive functioning involved when you work for yourself because unless you make your own decisions, nothing will move forward. Although this is not completely absent in conventional jobs, I feel like one can sometimes get away with just doing the motions but not applying too much executive functioning.

The greatest thing about working for yourself is to be able to fire any narcissist the tries to slither into your organisation.
The number of narcissists lying abusing and stealing credit,
that i had to endure working as a salaried employee makes me feel like
never want to return back to those hellholes.
