In my shop, I have welded a receiver hitch on my heave weld table similar to the back of my truck. When I need my tube bender I just hook it up just like the ball on your truck. When I need a hoist I just plug my hoist into the receiver. Same thing with vices grinders etc. On the receiver install a diagonal bolt to take out the slop in the receiver.
Yep. I have been saving 2" tube to make something similar. I am adding one to my bender stand for my bead roller. I will be able to flip it upside down to get it out of the way of the bender.
I just started my first project with this exact same set-up. WFB-2, HF-Long ram (8ton) and Swag Ram mount. I even made a trolly for my bender (before seeing this video). The one and biggest obstacle is making sure the Long Ram Air/hydraulic is "bled and filled" with fluid. I have a "2-stage 60 gallon" compressor and this bends beautiful. I use PJ Blaster for lube on my Die

Yep, makes a world of difference. You probably have the welded box style. Does the same thing except the newer design moves the ram inward since the pivot is centered on the sleeve instead of offset.
I removed my Chinese bender from the vertical riser and added a piece of receiver tubing and mounted a few receivers around the shop and this way it can be mounted all over the shop. Also mounted other stuff( vices and the like) to receiver, making the whole mess more versatile. Can even slide the stuff from the shop can in a pinch be slid into the rear of the truck…..end of many problems…

This was my first time watching and I subscribed. I fabricate things now more than I did last January when literally everything went up. 3/16 plate went from $113 dollars 4x8 to almost $700. My next project is a heat exchanger for my fireplace and I need to bend some tubing. I thought about cutting the material and just welding it at 90, but it needs smooth flow. I am going to see if Central Supply has a pneumatic ram, but you got my wheels turning!

You may not like the wheels when you deal with larger stuff. I have a tire changer I bolt down to the floor when I need it, so it's not in my way constantly like you spoke about. You can buy anchors to go in the concrete that mount flush with the floor and bolt it down when you want. I now have these threaded anchors in a few spots so I can decide where to mount whatever. Because they are not sticking up you have to be sure to drill into your concrete fairly accurately or things won't line up.
Cars get shuffled around in my small shop, so I can't always work from the same spot. I had to bend a stick a little over 10' and actually had to wheel it outside to do it since the shop was full of cars at the time. So far, it has worked great. I can't think of a time I'd bend any thing longer than a roll cage main hoop. If I ever do I have an adjustable roller stand I can support the end of the tube with that I use for long boards on my sliding compound miter saw.
Good video. Not many people don't make any assembly mistakes so don't feel bad about any of those parts. It did sound and look like you need a more CFPM air compressor to be able to run the bender any faster thoe. Over all good video and enjoyed watching it. 😊

You put the three screws in the collar in from the wrong side. You put the so the threads are on the same side as you started the bolts which means that they are not holding anything.
I worked with a guy that invented that hydraulic air Jack from Gillette Wyoming L&H welding shop his name was Clarence he's probably dead by now this is back in the 60s
I hope he got rich off his idea and didn't get it stolen from him.
On the tools u don't use much just every few months mount a trailer hitch receiver tube to under side of your bench then all the tools u don't use much weld a hitch tube on them and boomed its mounted securely for few mins u need it I even built a cart to haul all the tools around I current have a small metal brake a shrinker strecher a flat metal bender adapter to go to smaller tube and have a bunch of post dollies
Jeremy, I think you might be psychic. I have a receiver tube and a new bead roller and am planning on making a mount on the tubing bender stand that will allow me to flip the bead roller up to use it and turn it upside down to get it out of the way of the tubing bender. I just need to get some 2" square tube to make the "L" shaped mount. It wouldn't be a bad idea to do the same thing for my vice, bench grinder, transmission clamp, chainsaw chain sharpener and tubing notcher. Some of that stuff I currently keep under my bench and just bolt them to it when needed but using a receiver tube would make it quicker and nicer. I'll give you a shout-out when i do the video on the bead roller mount.
Yeah I'm not sure about that put I been using the trailer hitch mounting system a few yrsi recommend drilling a hole and welding a nut to side of the tube then u can put a bolt in there tighten it down and get the slop out the hitch lose tools suck

It's 2 bolts. Well one actual bolt and the bottom stud from the ram mount that goes through the bender and stand.

Those 1/4" hi flos are great as long as you keep oil in the coupling if not you nick the o ring and they leek i have been using them for years but if you do nick a o ring there easy to rebuild but loved your video

I was checking the recent prices on this, and I am confused. By the time you buy all the extras that are not included, including 1 or 2 dyes, you are almost at professional bender cost.
What do you consider a professional bender?
Good bender is expensive I’ll take the slow cheap route for bending 5 tubes a year

@user-us1dk6lh2r rogue fab I what I switched to after the jd. The jd is a great tool the rogue just makes things a little easier when making multiple bends especially if you buy some extra blocks
Sir just a suggestion about what I have done in my Race Shop. It's very small now that I'm retired, but it hasn't let me down yet. I build Race Engines and not a fabricator per say, but I don't farm anything out. I have a 16" by 16" 1/4" carbon steel plate that has 8 Tap Con to semi permanently attach it to the floor. First I welded 4 steel bungs to the bottom side and drilled appropriate holes into the concrete for these to fit into. These are drilled and tapped 7/16 X 20. I have plates on my bench grinder, belt and disc sander, etc. that I simply move over the floor plate and bolt them up and down as needed with a cordless impact.
Inexpensive, functional, and I truly hope that someone else can appreciate this. 🙏

I had a similar set up at my old shop but it was just for the bender so I could get it out of the middle of the floor when not in use. I really don't use it that often when I'm not building a new car. I never thought about the possibility of using it for other tools. It would have been a good idea. I have been collecting old hitch receivers and 2x2" square tube to make 3 interchangeable tool mounts. 1 at each of my 2 benches and 1 on the side of the bender stand. Then I can use them for bench grinder, transmission rebuild stand, bead roller, vices, or even my chainsaw chain grinder.

Thanks brother. Our ancestors used rocks and sticks and our grandpas built houses with tools that fit in a wooden box. Now folks have to buy a specific tool to do one 10 second job once a year and the tool costs more than the job that it was used for.

I use R pins they are easier to remove. I got a kit at tractor supply has several different sizes.

Stay tuned. I'm going to add a hitch receiver tube to the stand so I can mount my bead roller to it and flip it over out of the way when not in use. Got to make the most of space in a small shop.
What a waste of time
Hey mate, im a fairly well versed mig welder and i just bought one of these benders. Would you say they are cheap and not really worth it or do you think they are fairly made for their price? My plan is to slowly crank out a class 11 cage for my 63 Baja
They are good benders. The only trouble I've had was mine got some slop in the pin where the handle is pulled but converting to hydraulic got rid of that issue.

bed frame rails have a high carbon content to support fat people which becomes very brittle and prone to cracking after welding.

Yep they are the 1/4" purple Milton high flows. I have the big 1/2" Milton disconnects on the other end of the hose and at all my wall connections and they don't leak at all. I have since swapped all the high flows for standard cheap Harbor Freight ones and all is good now.
The spread on those wheels will probably hold a 3 foot piece of tube in there without flipping over
I've had over 10' sticks in it with the support foot out with zero problem.
How much of a bend can u get till the ram maxes out ?
When it reaches full extension, you bring it back in and move the pin to the next hole and keep going. The max radius of the bend depends on the die you are using. They sell up to 180° dies. All my dies are 120°.

I keep my regulator turned down to 90psi.

@shevilihabibi8895 The hydraulic ram is 8000lbs so oy has enough power but it would be probably be hard on the bender if it's a hard steel. It's made for roll cage chassis tubing which usually only goes to around .120" wall, which is about 3mm. I would contact Woodward Fab and ask if the bender can handle it. If so, the hydraulic ram should be strong enough to push it.

Does it move so slow because your air compressor too small to accommodate? Or is it just that slow?
When I first started it the air compressor shut off valve was closed and it started on just what was in the line. After that it had 80 gallons behind it. It isn't lightning fast but it really isn't any slower than doing it manually. If you want production parts fast, you will need a whole different bender and several thousand.

Woodward Fab is what I have. There are about 5 brands that make an almost identical manual bender and the Woodward Fab is the lowest price. I have had great luck out of it. You can get them direct but usually a little cheaper through Summitracing.com or Amazon.

There are probably 20 other companies making the same ram with the same diameter body. Unfortunately, in this new economy, they won't be $100 anymore. I think Northern Tool has one and Swag Offroad now sells one too.

I don't think so with any lengths used in a car. The longest tube you ever bend is the main hoop which starts out about 10' long. Plus that being 1 5/8" .083 wall chromoly or Docol, the whole tube weighs less than 14lbs. Then you figure probably no more than 2/3 of the tube will be hanging over. The whole bender and stand is pretty heavy. It would take a lot more than 10lbs of tube to tip it over. Now if you were bending a whole 20' stick of 1 3/4" .120 wall you might want to put a saw horse or something under the tube to support the weight.
I used a Harbour Freight trailer jack $49 to do the same thing

Yeah but it now has a fuel injected 5.3 LS. I just had it to wire the EFI and plumb and wire the Vintage Air and Dakota Digital instrument cluster. Nice car. Not a blemish anywhere on it.
I was looking at this bender but I can't use it. They don't make the right clr for the stuff I need to do.
A lot of these type benders from different manufacturers use dies that are interchangeable. Also Swag Offroad makes this kit to fit most manual benders. They would be a good resource to call and ask what bender sells the dies that will work for you. They would probably know.

There are dies that the tube pulls through. There are different ones available for different diameters and radius of bends.

@32:51, I think that poor Mustang needs 2 more scoops. Cowl induction AND a forward facing???
That isn't a cowl induction hood. It is a 2.5" Cobra R hood. 0 air is pulled off the windshield high pressure zone on a hood like that. It is a clearance only design which only has a half inch clearance over the leading edge of the 2000cfm throttle body on the 434ci small block with 2135pph of nitrous. The scoop is an enclosed tinted Lexan box that stays on the engine when the hood is lifted off. No it doesn't need 2 more scoops and it only has 1 currently.

Yeah it is pretty loud. Hydraulics ran off pumps are pretty quiet but air over hydraulic not so much. Really air over hydraulic is the cheep, slow, loud, compromise way of doing hydraulics.

@@repairfreak If I had to guess, with air over hydraulic the air portion work something like an air compressor so it has a piston which makes it kind of loud. Normal hydraulic is probably just a rotating pump through fluid which would be pretty silent.
@@Projekt5.3 Makes sense, this was the 1st time I saw an air ram operate. I always thought an air operated floor jack would be a nice addition to the toolbox.
Since your into hot rods, engines, fabrication, etc why didn’t you just build a true hydraulic power unit and be done with it instead of the “half ass” air over hydraulic setup. You can even buy a fully assembled (china made probably) power unit that are basically replacements for cheap import 2/4 post lift’s power units you see mounted vertically on one post of the atlas lifts and other brands. I’m sure you know what I’m talking about if your into cars, vertically stacked from top to bottom, electric motor/gear pump/distribution manifold/plastic reservoir at bottom! You’ll have momentary button to fire up the motor/pump and push fluid to the ram and a simple manual handle to open the return spool valve (weight/gravity of the car/lift returns the cylinder). I’ve seen them for just a little over $200. I mean, they aren’t necessarily the best way of making a hydraulic power source but they would certainly suffice for a simple single cylinder tubing bender. You might have to change the spool valve/actuation handle setup since lifts are single direction (push-extending) action only and on a bender it would be nice to have power in both in/out strokes.
There several builds on youtube of hydraulic power packs. The components are cheap since hydraulic power is so ubiquitous.
I’ve even seen a guy convert an old pressure washer (gutting it for the electric motor and pump head, you need some hose, a ram, bypass valve, regulator, weld up a simple sheetmetal tank/fluid reservoir, nuts bolts a few steel pipe bungs and viola! Put it all on a cart with 4 castors and roll it off in the corner or whatever when not in use.
Those air overs are just so damn loud and slow. Not to mention once you have an electric (or could be gas if you saw fit) hydraulic power pack it can power anything hydraulic.
I get it the harbor freight setup is cheap and works and for the little you use it that might be best. But myself I’m always looking to expand my capability, thinking about the future and for the few bucks more it would cost it would be sooo much more advantageous to have electric over versus the air over setup.
I actually have one of those pump/reservoir units somewhere but honestly, faster bending is something I actually wouldn't want. This deal is still quicker and way easier than manual bending and my main reason for it was to do away with the need to have it bolted to the floor, not to make a new bend every 30 seconds. When doing chassis work I will sometimes spend an hour getting a single tube bent, cut, fitted, notched and welded. The bend is the least time-consuming part of the process. When trying to hit an exact bend angle, the speed it comes around on the guage is about perfect. Miss it by a degree or 2, and you just wasted a piece of expensive chromoly. I have an air outlet every 12' in my shop and the unit rolls easily to where ever I have room to work, so it's ideal for me.

Machining and fabrication, welding, etc etc. just haven’t been able to talk my buddy who I work for into it yet. I see the potential but he doesn’t!
You got nitrous chronicles in your screen name but don’t recall seeing any videos about nitrous in my rather quick scan of your videos?? I’m a long time naturally aspirated plus nitrous guy. Although on my dragbikes only, yet it directly translates onto any engine. I’ve had pretty good success with heavy dry shots…granted these are my own design fully custom setups…not a shelf kit. I inject right into each port and use a standalone ecu to add the extra fuel via the injector right in the tune. All the standalone ecu have this capability built in. Have shot 300 additional horses on hayabusa engines once built with Carrillo rods, forged pistons, and oversized head studs. Check out Maxxecu-all the features of Holley, or any other big names at half the price. Race version ecu with wideband o2 and flying lead harness are like about 1700 retail and about $1400 dealer. Compatible with all the popular displays and even android tablets. Honestly I haven’t seen anything it cant do even compared to a motec m130 I’ve have the opportune of tuning on. You can build any input/output function you can think of and even devise your own internal software functions using if, and, then, =, +, - etc logic.
For example, if sensor A (which you have hooked to a laser ride height sensor on the chassis) output more than a given voltage then pull x amount of timing (this being an example of wheelie control). If you can think of it and devise a way to monitor it with a sensor then you can tie it to any function the ecu controls.

man that thing bends slow, it would take forever to build cages and frames at that speed, either you got an itty bitty compressor or that ram is a piece of garbage, wonder if that is why harbor freight has quit selling that ram.......
When it was first tried in the video, the compressor line was closed and it started just on what was in the lines. After that, I would say it was plenty fast for any bending except for factory production parts manufacturing. It is easily as fast as manual bending. How many cages have you built than requires a bend to be done in seconds? How many bends are you actually completing, notching and fitting in a day's time? Unless you are running off a jig where you make a bunch of the same part over and over, I don't see the need. And if you are, you are making some serious coin and need to be looking at a way more expensive unit for that type work. I just used it yesterday to make 2 bends for a rear end housing brace and it took less then minute including moving the tube and leveling back up for the second bend.
I don't know how old you are now, but those things are not cotter pins, they are spring clips. That may be why you had such a hard time removing them, if you thought you were removing cotter pins !

Those are spring steel split pins. A cotter pin totally different. Pretty basic stuff for someone who does fab work ? Thoroughly reading directions if you are clueless will get you a long way also. Just saying. You are entertaining though !

Your air system can’t keep up with needed pressure for cylinder.
It can if I turn it on. At first the valve from the compressor that is outside was off so it started on just what was in the lines that circle the whole shop. Then when I opened it, it was just what was sitting in the tank for a minute until it kicked on. I have my regulator set at 90psi. Plus that fitting leaked enough air to run a second tool.

I just installed that same air/hyd. unit on my JD2 model 32.. I DO NOT recommend it.. It is SSSSL:LLLLLLOOOOWWWWW and eats up an 80 gallon tank of air for each swing of the bender arm.. I'm not kidding. My Harbor Freight air/hyd unit is exactly the one he is setting up here. I have one for sale for anyone that is looking for one. It has never bent a piece of pipe, and is BRAND new with warranty. I'm going the straight hydraulic route by utilizing a 2 post car lift hydraulic motor. 30:15 notice how he skipped to 8X speed... that's how mind-numbingly
slow the air/hydr unit is.. His compressor will be running for WEEKS trying to bend enough tube for a roll cage, or any project for that matter... For me, it's just not going to work. I do not have the time to stand and wait the several minutes it takes for a single swing of the bender arm.
Sounds like you got something wrong with your ram or something. It is slow but not that slow. It takes less than 2 minutes to make a 90 and I'm not seeing that much air consumption even with my leaky Milton fittings. My 60 gallon 5hp has no problem keeping up. As you seen in the video it even started the bend with my air shut off just from what was left in the line from the last time the valve was open going to the compressor outside the building. I don't know how fast you need tubes to bend but the speed this works at is great for me. I don't stand there and bend 50 sticks at a time. The ability to make it mobile is the point of this deal. If you are doing production bending for parts you probably don't need this type of set up.
@@rpmchuck-nitrouschronicles You may be right. That seems to be my luck.. If I had a million rams to choose from, the one that pick every time would be the only bad one in the batch. I'm moving over to straight hydraulic regardless.. I'm not gonna mess around with this ram any more.

Of the many $1000s in tools l have only about $300 are used ONLY for what they were bought to do.

@@rpmchuck-nitrouschronicles I understand the use of chrome sockets sometimes. What does a person use if a thick wall impact socket wont fit to take off a wheel lug nut? Do they make special thin wall impact sockets that actually fit in tight holes such as cast rims? Thanks
@@repairfreak not that I've ever seen. I have personally never broke a decent socket in my life. I have on the other hand destroyed some breaker bars, ratchets and extentions. I do have a nice set of 1/2" drive metric impact sockets and a few select larger standard sizes for stuff that I was concerned about. Like a crank bolt for example. I have even tried to break a socket before just to see how far they would go to failure and that socket is still safe in my box somewhere. That big Dewalt impact is a beast.
How much of a bend can u get till the ram maxes out ?
When it reaches full extension, you bring it back in and move the pin to the next hole and go further. The max radius is determined by the die you are using. They sell up to a 180° die. All my dies are 120°.
