Dead Can Dance contributed to the music for the 1992 film Baraka, and it is well worth checking out. Thanks for the diversity of music you react to - very much appreciated!
You should really experience Their masterpiece Host of the Seraphim, it was used to great effect in the horror film “The Mist.” Cantara is great as well....
The Wind that Shakes the Barley is used as the main title theme of the film of thw same name. A wonderful film about the Irish struggle for independence in the early 20th Century.
Wind that shakes the barley was written in the mid 19th century during the time of the Young Irelanders about the 1798 rebellion. The Barley symbolises that Irish nationalism may be cut down but it will regrow, Rebels would have eaten it on the march or as the area in which most of the action happened is Wexford with rebels coming from the nearby southeast of Leinster which includes Wexford at the time grew and still grow a lot of corn (grains) like Barley.
This is a great reaction. Thank you. Many reactions have already heard the song or group - I loved hearing your impressions. Thank you. Their early stuff is SO different if you ever want to react to those.
I find it great you cover some more demanding music than usual classics and sucesses. I hear Dead Can Dance since the eighties and always liked the original sound they have. There's no other Dead Can Dance kind of band. They created their own sound. As a band that exists for 40 years, it's natural they had some ups and downs in their albuns and the tracks you reacted are far from their best. If you have the will to discover more from them, just try Cantara, Song of Seraphim or Summoning of the Muse. There are a lot of another great and different songs to explore, all of them surprising. I had the luck to see them live here in Portugal and it was magical. By the way, although they came from Oceania, they settled early in England.
I was there for this live recording! It was recorded live at the Mayfield or Mayfair theatre in Santa Monica, Ca. I was boiwn away seeing them live. I believe there was 8 members if I recall correctly. So many different types of workd instruments being used. If you ever get the chance wath a video of them performing live. Enjoyed your reactions!
I was actually in the audience, front row, right of center stage for the filming of Toward the Within, in November 1993, at the Mayfair Theatre, Santa Monica, CA...it was beyond amazing, and an experience I will never forget!!! Just being able to be present to see them play live takes you to another realm!
Another one of those acquired taste bands, you really have to be in the mood for. They certainly do transport you to another time and place as you say Shawn, which is probably why Hans Zimmer asked Lisa Gerrard to join him on writing/performing the Gladiator score.
I know Lisa from 1979 old skool GOTH the name Dead Can Dance is from the instruments they use trees and animal strings and they bring the dead back to life that's how the name was derived
For those interested, anything Dead Can Dance sings, that is not English, isn't a language at all. It's called glossolalia. Glossolalia is using sounds and syllables as though they're just another instrument - no words intended, but still conveying emotion through vocals.
The exotic string instrument you hear heavily featured is a Chinese Dulcimer. They're one of the few I've yet to check off my list of bands to see live, and unfortunately their April show has been rescheduled for next year.
@@ReactionsToTheClassics this chinese dulcimer is called "yang t'chin" and actually "dulcimer" has french roots, it's because this instrument is called in French " tympanon doulce melle" and "doulce melle" which mean "sweet melody" became "dulcimer" in English. This hammered dulcimer became in Romania a cymbalum and later a spinet then harpsichord and finally the current piano. It's very close to the german Hackbrett too.
Please watch the DVD. They give information throughout and you get to see all the different instruments it takes to do this. They are AMAZING live. Everyone from people in tuxes to goth to metal heads and hippies. Yiu euther get it....or you dont.
Salam Hello this is the first time I see you guys you are great dead can dance his music don't have time like our feelings rakim and desert song inspire in Arabic atmosphere and the wind that shakes the barley Irish poem
Lisa doesn't always sing actual words (much like her contemporary Liz Fraser of Cocteau Twins). Great choice; I used to have this on VHS, lol but never got to see them live. Btw...Brendan is from Ireland. I thought you were going to be watching this. Lisa is playing the opening hammered instrument (Yang t'chin or Yanquin I think a kind of Chinese hammered dulcimer)
The "languages" that Dead Can Dance sing in their songs are mainly just gibberish. I believe they are meant to evoke the ancient past, to seem like dead languages no one knows anymore. It's music where the "dead can dance."
Alixter Princess 1 year ago "DCD, Is really good music!, Brendan's voice Is like/ between Jim Morrison and Frank Sinatra". Spot on and sadly, one of the most underrated singer I've ever heard!
I always considered DCD a very interesting band with an unique sound. I must admit however that I rarely listen to them. On a separate but related note, it would be great if the channel could dedicate some attention one of these days to 4AD, their record label. 4AD has an amazing catalog of music, always very personal and distinctive. They have signed a good number of the most imaginative and singular groups since the 80s: Pixies, Throwing Muses, Belly, Cocteau Twins, Red House Painters, The Birthday Party, Bauhaus, Deer hunter, Lisa Germano, Iron & Wine, The National, St. Vincent, TV on the Radio, The The, Thievery Corporation, This Mortal Coil, Scott Walker... Impressive. And their art work is always mind blowing!
We have covered some of them and have some more coming up. Didnt know the label though, very nice mix of artists that wouldn't have been heard otherwise, will have to check it out. Thanks Fran!
Massive DCD fan. Love the songs you did but they didn't showcase the full power of Lisa's voice, it is otherworldly. Check out Sanvean, the live video from Toward the Within is available in UA-cam. Also Cantara From Toward the Within now amazing. Studio version of Avatar is also amazing and studio version of Host of Seraphim. All of these are sung by Lisa and are stunning.
Lisa's voice is reminiscent of Sinead O'Connor and Enya. She even has a cover of one of Sinead's songs. On some songs she sounds as Celtic as Maire Brennan who is a Celtic Christian artist.
i believe rakim is indeed about the parable of the the fortunate son. please react to the rest of this live performance. there are alot of emotive peices that they get into and some really diverse stuff. thanks.
@@ReactionsToTheClassics I search weekly for Dead Can Dance reactions and it always suprises me how little of them there are. such a unique and emotional band that can paint mental soundscapes. such a shame that more people arent exposed to the inner ecstacy that can be achieved when listening to Lisas voice. Thank you so much for reacting!
Oh, I thought it would be Rakim, the man who is called the God MC. You don't know what words can do until you've heard Rakim flow like a river. Hence my strong recommendation for Eric B & Rakim: Follow The Leader.
The first 2/3 of Rakim Brendan Parry sings in a language of his own construction followed by English in the last part. That confuses a lot of people but the vocals are really just there to glue the melodies and rhythms together like plaster between rocks in a wall of sound. Such a great song.
Definitely a band with quite a bit of great stuff, and though there’s very Indian to Arabic vibes at times, there’s also much more song based songs by them also. Desert Song though interesting is far from one of their highlights. The other two tracks I’d have similar in my rankings though very different. Takin as you say, a musical trip, deep and mysterious, whilst Wind . . . Barley has a powerful emotional resonance to it.
Never heard this artist. . The first song is strange like you said Shawn. Couldn't understand the language, but the music is interesting with a lot of percussion. The second song has wind instruments and a middle Eastern feel like you said Trey, and You're right Shawn that the music transports us as we listen. The third song is different than the other two songs. It is sung A capella. You guys understand the meaning of the ;lyrics. I agree with your order of songs, third song first, first song second, second song third. The first two songs have a weird vibe.
@@ReactionsToTheClassics Yes Sir. By watching your videos I am broadening my music horizons as well as you guys listening to a lot of these songs for the first time.

Thanks Matthew we appreciate it!
They were astounding live, I got to see them in a place with opera acoustics and it was just mind boggling.
I bet that was fantastic! Thanks Robert!
I concur. Unfortunately they just cancelled their tour for the 3rd time 😢
One of the must songs to react to is “Cantara” from that same concert. Out of this world!
Really appreciate the suggestion and thanks for watching Dani!
@@ReactionsToTheClassics I agree with the above comment. Cantara is a phenomenal experience!

It's a heartbreaking watch, but Cillian Murphy is just brilliant in the lead role.
