I love Olivia Colman! There's an amazing clip when she made history by winning two BAFTA awards in one night, and wasted most of her speech fangirling over Matt LeBlanc, who she spotted in the audience, instead of acknowledging her win. And I agree with everyone else, you HAVE to see Broadchurch. Absolutely astonishing show.

Not many people have a best actress Oscar, Bafta, Emmy and Golden Globe, like Olivia (plus loads more) she has been nominated 156 times and won 66 times, that's a big win ratio, every 1 in 2.3 a win.

  • @SaintPhoenixx

Olivia's great on these shows, mainly because it's like she doesn't know she's famous. I don't know her but I can almost guarantee she was the exact same person before she became an actor, slightly kooky and awkward but funny and endearing with it. She's a highly respected actor who's been in huge TV shows and films and yet it still seems like if you asked for her autograph or a selfie, she'd be taken aback and say "Me? Why?"
She seems so normal. She's a bit weird, but not like Mark Wahlberg weird. Doesn't take herself seriously and that makes her a great chat show guest. She'll tell any story if it's funny, she's not trying to maintain a public image.

In fairness I think Olivia does actually learn her lines even if she didn't research what it's like to be a detective.
Famously Marlon Brando had scripts taped all over film sets and even his fellow actors so he didn't have to learn anything, he could just read it. It's why he always had that 'looking off into the middle distance' thing going on 🙂

@@MandyCaneLane One of the stranger rules of the American Screen Actor’s Guild & its British equivalent (UK Equity) is that members are absolutely prohibited from having the same name. David Tennant’s real name, for instance, is David McDonald. There was already a David McDonald listed on the Equity union rolls when he started acting so he re-christened himself David Tennant when he turned professional. David chose Tennant as his new name because he was a big fan of the Pet Shop Boys & their frontman Neil Tennant.

There is a lovely interview with Olivia Coleman and Helena Bonham Carter, they are such good friends... I think Olivia Coleman just rocks up and delivers, she's an Oscar winner and amazing actress.

  • @gbulmer
    @gbulmer Рік тому +6

Mandy, AFAICT Olivia is very professional about acting, just not "method". Graham Norton interviewed Olivia and Helena Bonham Carter about their approach to acting (for The Crown). Olivia said Helena did lots of research and she didn't. Olivia was interviewed about 'her process' to prepare to play Queen Anne in "The Favourite" ①. Olivia said she used the script and some notes from the director and writers. Olivia said something like, "Queen Anne had 17 children, and not one survived. That was the character I was playing." So I think she likely has a lot of empathy and imagination.
Olivia worked with Mitchell & Webb on sitcoms and sketch shows. David Mitchell was a writer and leading actor in the sketch shows. Mitchell was interviewed about working with Olivia; I think very soon after she won the Oscar. He said something like "she's great. Sometimes when we can't figure out how to make a sketch work, someone will just say, 'Give it to Colly [nickname], she'll make it work', then we have a break, and she does". I struggle to think of a greater compliment than a writer and star of multiple series of sketch shows happily explaining that's how they do it, "Give it to Colly".
① Olivia Colman won her "Leading Actress" Oscar playing Queen Anne in the movie "The Favourite".
This Graham Norton video started with Olivia explaining the "wet sponge" story. That was a scene from "The Favourite" where Olivia was playing Queen Anne and the actresses Emma Stone had to portray an intimate act which was relevant to her becoming Queen Anne's favourite. I think Olivia's 'creative wet sponge idea' demonstrates she does think about how to make scenes work. She isn't passively "going along for the ride". She's a creative contributor. Also a prankster.
    Best Wishes. ☮

The thing was that she is involved in a lot of different movie projects one after the other and so she can be on the fourth movie afterwards when suddenly the earlier one is released and she can`t remember the names of characters etc, when she`s already moved on to the project after the next one. I don`t think she is disrespectful or unprepared while she`s actually doing them, otherwise directors would just stop hiring her.

I agree with you, that cast were paid a massive amount of money for the show, so you'd expect her to learn lines, especially as the last season all the cast were paid 1 million dollars an episode, plus they continue to receive a paycheck due to global syndication of the show.

I can't image the hostess of a hip, young channel like this would be ready for such things. Unless she had some sort of loose connection to the theatre world. Who knows? But it really is a great film. Three outstanding female leads, more hankerchief-like costumes than a snotty whale could wipe its nose upon, and, despite the brutality towards women, the whippings, the faeces covered faces, the animal torture and the awful British cuisine, it really is a jolly hoot. Hurrah!

First off, your pronunciation of "Colman" as "Coal man", is pretty much how we'd all pronounce it here in the UK.
Your ignorance (if confirmed) is no greater or more egregious than ours, so trust me, you needn't worry on that score!
Secondly, I was never a fan of hers... probably because she always tended to play characters in productions & genres that I actively disliked.
    The effect was cumulative.
The more I saw of her, the less I liked her.
But the UK media loved her, promoted her, rubbed our noses in everything she did...and that just pissed me off & cemented my distain! 🤬
It's a weird thing, when you're aware (logically) that it's the character you dislike... not the actor.
But it's really difficult to separate the two, particularly when the media expends so much time and effort telling you that this is an amazing actress! That really turned me against her!
If I ever saw her name in a cast list, I'd probably avoid whatever it was, unless there was someone more palatable or interesting headlining.
However, I like to think I'm a reasonable person, so I bit the bullet and watched, "Empire of Light" recently, based on it's reviews. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
    Still, I wasn't entirely convinced...
    Until now!
As I said, when her name comes up, I generally tend to look the other way, so I really hadn't seen any of the clips you included.
    Long story short:
Your reaction vid kinda forced me to actually see the actress behind the media hype and the shitty roles, and softened my opinion.
I may finally be open to watching more of Olivia Colman's work now, largely thanks to you. 😁
Trust me, I'd never have watched this much Olivia Colman content, if not for this vid & the fact that I watch almost everything you put out!
