They broke the mold when they made Linda. Willie Nelson (I believe) once said "There are two kinds of men - those who love Linda Ronstadt, and those who have never met her".
Linda was 23, and this as one of the first - if not THE first time she was on TV. Johnny introduced her as "someone who has what it takes to be around for a long, long time." Good call!
Johnny's wife June said Linda wasn't wearing underwear when they tried to record this and she insisted Linda "put some panties on to sing wih my Johnny." Lol. I got this from the Best of The Johnny Cash Show on DVD. I'm a huge fan of both. And one footnote, Linda Rhonstadt has never married.
You can see her wearing this same dress in an early live performance of "Different Drum" with a later lineup of the Stone Ponys. ua-cam.com/video/TGZznJXY1Xc/v-deo.html
Linda recorded this with Dolly Parton and Emmy Lou Harris on one of the Trio albums. In terms of different eras, don't forget that Linda sang country/rock, pop, folk rock, traditional Mexican music, standards with the Nelson Riddle orchestra, and operetta. If you haven't seen her arias in "Pirates of Penzance,' check it out.
So, lost my dad 13 years ago this week. He was a Huge Johnny Cash fan, but I secretly feel he had a crush on Linda! Her voice, especially Blue Bayou, reminds me of dad to this day. Lost him too soon, but I love Linda’s voice, and of course, Johnny. They are stark reminders of beautiful music, and my dad who admired and loved them both! RIP Johnny and Daddy. You were both living legends to me!♥️
I absolutely agree with you and it’s lucky for us that they recorded so many songs together I love her and James Taylor in every song they’ve ever done together and there’s a bunch of them
This was early on in Linda's career, when the country music industry seemed to think she was a "Country singer" or "folk and country" category when in reality she was a singer's singer, no one style, and she was trying to find her way, her sound. She found out she was every sound. She had taken voice lessons forever in Tucson AZ where she was raised. She had total command of her voice, tone quality, dynamics, phrasing, everything. Other "screamers" couldn't touch her. She was a pioneer for women singers controlling their own destiny.
Johmny Cash had artists from many genres on his show, Louie Armstrrong, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, James Taylor, as well as country greats, George Jones, a young Hank Jr. and many others.
Every young man in the U.S. had a huge crush on Linda from the late sixties forward. She just had a gorgeous face to go along with that angelic voice. She showed up barefoot to these gigs😂😂
She said an interview about 3 years ago or so that she thought she sounded like a goat. I just thought girl you don't sound nothing like no go no goat. To me she has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard. In fact as a young lady growing up as a singer I learned a heck of a lot from her
On the dvd of best of johnny cash show, they tell a story of june buying panties for linda, as she didn't want her bare with her johnny. Guess that was kinda style then. No panties.
By my count you've done a dozen Linda Ronstadt reactions. I recommend "Willin'" written by Lowell George and Little Feat. There's three good live versions of it here on YT from 1976 and '77.
Johnny Cash did a lot for artists when he had his show. It was recorded at the Ryman Auditorium -- home of The Grand Ol' Opry -- and so audiences -- respecting both the place and Johnny -- payed attention when he praised the people he had on his show. He truly gave a lot of artists' careers a big boost.
You should listen to Linda and Dolly Parton's version of this done in 1977. It was a deep cut on her "Simple Dreams" album. My favorite of all her albums. It's the one that featured "Blue Bayou"
Going to steely Dan....yes Michael McDonald played vocals as did skunk Baxter with his smooth guitar then moved to the doobie brothers hence changing the sound of the doobie brothers music till 79.
Besides the underlying panty story. I first saw this on the best of dvd for johnny cash show. I was hooked, and look for her version of it. Turns out this is a Mish mash of the old Carter version and linda more modern version which just tells of him leaving on the train. Just a perfect moment in time.
Yeah, this is nice. Two different styles from Linda. Going deep. Wow! Look how young she is. Oh the look...Lol! Man, I looked!! Such a deep register vocal-wise. Generations were being bridged, in ways like this, then. New School being welcomed by Old School... and Johnny is the one doing the greeting. Beautiful. What a performance! Have you ever seen the footage where Linda performs in a prison, and with a dress that short...? Talk about poise?? Right about L. being able to thrive in any era. Thank you.
This was early days. B was the late sixties, before she really found her Linda Ronstadt voice. She pretty much sounds like a beautiful Joan Baez clone. In fact, close your eyes and listen to this and it sounds exactly as though Johnny Cash we're doing a duet with Joan Baez.
Yeah, Johnny was fourteen years older then her, but you can tell he was trying to keep up with the times with that ruffled shirt, very popular among the young in the late sixties. And yes, "Linda was fine-fine," especially in that Betsey Johnson dress from the late sixties that she has said was her go-to performance outfit at the time.
Jamal, you are basically right...Check out these CD/ Albums:"WHAT'S NEW, FOR SENTIMENTAL REASONS and LUSH LIFE here she sing songs of 40's (with Nelson Riddle conducting)
Well Linda always said she wouldn't sing a song unless she could relate to the lyrics so interesting to think how she sang this at so young an age, perhaps 20?, and never did actually marry.
When I was in 5th grade, my uncle’s date stood him up for a Rolling Stones concert so I got to go. Linda Ronstadt came out to sign ‘Tumbling Dice’ with them! It was love at first sight!✌🏻
We wore little suits called Hot Pants. Shorts with a matching top. But. We wore panty hose with them. So our legs looked really good. I wore a suit like this to a job interview. Got the job.
Anita Carter is the greatest forgotten singer of yesteryear. She just wanted to sing with her family but she could have been a huge star had she chosen it. Her “Is It For Me” is one of my top favorite songs by anyone.
@@ahartfie June never hid the fact that she never felt comfortable singing along with Anita ~ which is why she adopted the silly act of hers to avoid being compared with Anita
By all means, listen to her version on her Simple Dreams album, with backup from Dolly Parton, and Waddy Wachtel on guitar. Painfully beautiful, maybe the saddest song I ever heard.
Interesting side story. Linda Ronstadt being a hippy child did not usually wear underwear, even with the short dresses (not unusual in the 60's/70's). During rehearsal Johnny's wife, June Carter, was sitting in the front row of the audience and noticed that fact. She pulled Linda aside and told her that if she was going to perform alongside her husband she damn well better wear underwear. Supposedly, June sent someone a local store and bought some for her, which she put on and wore for the performance. Yes, Johnny is a little out of sorts doing this one with June paying close attention to the situation. 🙂
Johnny was much like Willie Nelson in his unusual and wonderful ability to pull together people of different cultural and musical backgrounds. He and Dylan were tight, and Johnny was heavily involved in Dylan's Nashville Skyline album. Besides Linda, his show featured folks generally considered outside the country genre, like: Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, Roy Orbison, Melanie, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Ray Charles, Pete Seeger, and of course Dylan.
She was a big deal, she made the news, big controversy, about her being barefoot! I remember that so well watched the show and next night on the news it was brought up.
Johnny Cash always introduced himself. ☺️ He had stars from every type of music out there. I remember Bob Dylan, Waylon Jennings and the Carpenters to name a few. Hello, I'm Johnny Cash ☺️
Linda never did marry but she had plenty of boyfriends: Albert Brooks, Jim Carey, Bill Murray, Governor Jerry Brown, George Lucas, and Aaron Neville to name a few.
J- you want triple watt beauty and talent? Look no further than the super folk group , Trio- with none other than Linda, Dolly and Emmylou! Two albums! “ The Sweetest Gift”and “ After the Goldrush” are two great ones to react to. Lots of video up with them.
If you all have a chance to send her some uplifting messages I think that she would appreciate it. She's pretty down on herself since she got that disease. It stole her singing voice she can't even sing No More.
No disrespect to Mr.Cash but her solo version is magic. Linda has never married and as she wrote that she never ever wanted to marry. She stated that she was too much of a individualist and independent person and won’t have been good at it.
They broke the mold when they made Linda. Willie Nelson (I believe) once said "There are two kinds of men - those who love Linda Ronstadt, and those who have never met her".
I'm a third kind: I do even though I haven't... 😀
Linda was 23, and this as one of the first - if not THE first time she was on TV. Johnny introduced her as "someone who has what it takes to be around for a long, long time." Good call!
She was great!
I see what you did there! 😉
I read somewhere that June had someone go out and buy something for Linda to wear underneath.
Linda couldn't break Johnny's love for June¡
She’s wearing a classic late 60’s- 70’s look!
You can see her wearing this same dress in an early live performance of "Different Drum" with a later lineup of the Stone Ponys. ua-cam.com/video/TGZznJXY1Xc/v-deo.html

@Julie Marino Agreed.
I prefer her version with Dolly and Emmy. 🥰
Linda Ronstadt and Dolly Parton recorded this together. It was on Linda's 1977 album "Simple Dreams".
So, lost my dad 13 years ago this week. He was a Huge Johnny Cash fan, but I secretly feel he had a crush on Linda! Her voice, especially Blue Bayou, reminds me of dad to this day. You were both living legends to me!♥️
Linda's voice was pure and clear... like the tone of a bell. James Taylor's voice is also that way.
Just saw Linda and Johnny's name and I tuned in just to hear those two together and you posted it.
Love Linda.💙
Love Johnny.💙
Love the ocean.💙
Love melancholy songs of love lost.💙
Love you, Jamel.💙
What's not to love about this reaction? Nothing!💙☮💙

What you said about Linda is totally accurate. One of thee best
Chuck Berry and Linda performing live "Back in the USA"! Excellent performance.
Two iconic voices… beautiful
You really need to check out Linda's other song she sings on this same show, "Long Long Time". It will break your heart. It was her first big hit.
She said an interview about 3 years ago or so that she thought she sounded like a goat. I just thought girl you don't sound nothing like no go no goat. To me she has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard. In fact as a young lady growing up as a singer I learned a heck of a lot from her
Linda Ronstadt is one of the best female singers in this any many more generations to come
Love Johnny too
She sings with james taylor on an old english folk song "one morning in May". A beautiful song
A cute moment at the end. Two iconic voices. Couldn't agree more, Jamel. Just eternal.
I’m 66 years old male and had a crush on her growing up
Husband said everyone in his dorm had poster of Linda on the wall..circ1977
Two musical legends.
Long, Long Time is a great early song by Linda. Great with the Stone Poneys.
Awww, what a pleasure! Didn't know this existed; only ever heard Linda sing it solo. ♥
From what I understand when Linda was on this show Johnny's wife was never far away. Don't think she trusted Linda with her man.
On the dvd of best of johnny cash show, they tell a story of june buying panties for linda, as she didn't want her bare with her johnny. Guess that was kinda style then. No panties.
Well, because June was his he walked the line...said so himself. 😀
Different drum is a iconic song by Linda. Though you may have already done it. I love Linda. "Lose again" is another
The best version of this song was on Linda’s album and she did it with Dolly Parton alone and it is so utterly beautiful you have to listen to it
☮️💜 check out Linda singing Long Long Time on the Johnny Cash show
By my count you've done a dozen Linda Ronstadt reactions. I recommend "Willin'" written by Lowell George and Little Feat. There's three good live versions of it here on YT from 1976 and '77.
Yes Willin' stands above all others
She was a beautiful hippie.
Beautiful song beautiful versus.

Prayers for Linda
Yes, Linda was VERY pretty!
Embodies the 60s here. The mini dress, her big hair, barefoot, hoop earrings. Gorgeous
In that song he recorded he was telling the record companies to stick it they said he could not do another album.
All the fellas in the 70s had some posters of her...look them up.
Linda was gorgeous.
The man in black and a beautiful colorful lady blend voices so fine
Besides the underlying panty story.
I first saw this on the best of dvd for johnny cash show.
I was hooked, and look for her version of it.

Sublime voices

You might be surprised who Johnny had on his show. Like Eric Clapton's band at the time Derek and the Dominoes.

She actually looks a lot like Selena Gomez here. I knew she was half-Latina, but that similarity is the first time I've seen it.
This would be just after she left The Stone Ponies. I Don't think you have check out her 1st hit with them.
She's extra beautiful here.
Those eyes. My parents and grandparents used to call them bedroom eyes.
Love you my friend

In pre-production, Linda Ronstedt and June Carter clashed over her wardrobe choices.
You should look up the Peasal sisters who did the singing for "O brother where art thou" singing this song.
Jamel, you have to check out the version of "Blue Bayu" done by the blues singer Billie Holliday. It is really special.
i agree 100%
She's the Prince of females in my humble mind
This is a very old song. Goes back a century maybe longer.
Jamel if you get time react to Linda singing “Faithless Love” live.
Check out Johnny singing with the Cowsills on his show
Linda sounds a bit like Joan Baez in this song. Loved it!
I totally can hear that Baez sound. I wonder if it's because they are both Mexican; their musicality might be affected by their heritage.
Even with Parkinson's Linda is still beautiful.
Great!!!
Dwight Yokham A Million Miles From Nowhere
Linda with Frank Sinatra "Moonlight in Vermont"
Johnny is much older and more Country, but Linda grew up on Texas Country music and Mexican ballads.
Johnny Cash's sister in law Anita Carter did the best version of this song with Hank Snow
Anita Carter is the greatest forgotten singer of yesteryear. She just wanted to sing with her family but she could have been a huge star had she chosen it. Her “Is It For Me” is one of my top favorite songs by anyone.
@@ahartfie June never hid the fact that she never felt comfortable singing along with Anita ~

@@Nuerth June was the entertainer, Helen had the technical talent, and Anita had the voice. 👍🏻👍🏻
June Carter Cash was pissed because Linda was showing toomuch sitting next to her man
Jamel do some of the great country Duets, start with Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty " Your the Reason our Kids are Ugly"
Well, she wasn't kidding. She never married.
By all means, listen to her version on her Simple Dreams album, with backup from Dolly Parton, and Waddy Wachtel on guitar. Painfully beautiful, maybe the saddest song I ever heard.
You should have heard her live. Your life would have been changed.
Glen Campbell had a show too with great guests!

That gave me goosebumps ain't heard that since 69 but I'll b damned if it wasn't as good as it was then. Very Nice..
I don't know if you ever did the Johny Cash song by Nine inch nails, hurt?
Linda never did marry but she had plenty of boyfriends: Albert Brooks, Jim Carey, Bill Murray, Governor Jerry Brown, George Lucas, and Aaron Neville to name a few.
Right at the end you can see that her feet are bare!

Great reaction! If you like this song, there is a super sweet version with Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton, and Emmy Lou Harris. It's just dreamy.
