I had been curious about when a cucumber is “mature”. Last year was my first time growing them and I definitely waited too long to pick, but not long enough for them to be that yellow. I’m watching my plant a lot more closely this year.
Also, I just got your book! My toddler enjoys looking through the pictures. It’s funny to see her leafing through it. She’s out with me in the garden so she’s learning early.
Thanks so much for the book support. And it is always great to hear kids are learning about gardening. Nice.

My cucumbers are going crazy. They get full sun at the community plot and it’s really paying off. Picked 9 of them today.
Nice work. They can be big producers when everything is in sync.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN the garden at our old townhouse in EC only got 4-5hrs of sun. And there really is a major difference with the production from all the plants at the community plot. Our new house in mount airy has a SE facing backyard that I believe gets 6-8hrs or more of full sun. I’ll know for sure once we move in. But I’ll be having a much larger garden there. 🤞🏻
Perfect advice! I was wondering when to pick my last cucumber for seeds. Thankyou.

@@Hello-rw7ry Using paper envelopes is fine for short term as next years planting, but for longer storage I recommend using ziplok bags for up to 5 years and Mylar heat sealed envelopes for longer storage...as some seeds can stay viable ( stored correctly ) for a decade or longer....😀😀

You can also dry them on coffee filters. They tend to stick less than on a paper towel or napkin. Not that sticking hurts anything (and if they are really stuck just cut them out and plant next year with the little bit of paper towel)
Hey Mark, can you dry the seeds out in the sun?
@@msglca I have dried seeds in the sun and it worked fine. You just need to watch out for rain, wind, birds, etc.
Thanks Mark
Very true. I do that with my tomatoes.

@Mark Yes and using greaseproof or baking paper even works out better as I save seeds every season and this is the best method for me... drying on a window sill in the shaded sunlight for a week... they do not tend to stick to the paper. The other extra method I use is washing seeds in a Hydrogen Peroxide solution (100:1 @ 6% ) for 10 minutes prior to putting out to dry, this eliminates any fungi, bacteria and possible disease transfer by the seeds to the sowing beds. 🧓🏿😀
Perfect on topic video, thanks.
Do the seeds that you sell in your shop come from your garden?
Not currently. I am sold out. Most are sourced but I do save a lot and will be stating they are from my garden. I have to collect more.

What do you think of fermenting them? I'd followed your steps exactly up to that seed collection, where I put some water over the seeds and have them sitting out. Your way looks easier!
You can ferment. I do that with tomatoes. But for cukes, I just let them mature and scoop them out.

Thanks was wondering why my seeds shriveled.
Hi. Thanks for the instructional 👍.
Do they have to be over ripened? I know what you say is true and tested. Any luck with seeds from a mature green cucumber? I'll maybe try with one I eat regardless and see if one sprouts. Curiouser and curiouser...
Glad to share. They really need to be over ripe to ensure seeds matured. They can continue to mature once picked but they really should be on the vine.

If you picked one at the regular green stage and set it aside would it change to that orange color with the mature seeds? Or does it still need to be on the plant to get to that stage?
It should be on the plant optimally. But the seeds might live off a picked cucumber and progress. I just dont know for sure.

Great!! Thanks!!
Another great video! Question: Can an heirloom plant be cross pollinated? If so, are the seeds produced in the new vegetable/fruit still heirloom? 🌞🇨🇦
Yes. No.
You can protect your heirloom genetics by proactively hand pollinating and then immediately closing the flower and protecting it with a mesh bag so other insects don’t try to pollinate it for you. :)
Yes anything can be cross pollinated. And heirloom means a stable cultivar that is 50 years old or more. IF you cross 2 heirloom plants, its technically not an heirloom but that would pretty cool

Can I use the seeds right away? After I harvest? And how do I know for sure that they are viable? Do they have to sink down in a cup of water?
The should dry a good week or so. Not sure how you can tell but test sprout 10 or so in a wet paper towel. Thats how you know.

Question. I brought one of these in the house to harvest seeds from but it needed a few more days... My wife unknowingly put it in the refrigerator... Will this impact the harvesting process at all?
I dont think it will harm it. Just take it out again and let it go a while.

Sorry if it's been asked already. What if the cucumbers I was waiting to turn that color yellow, the vine dried up from freezing weather, and they dropped off the vines on their own?
I don't know the variety of pickling cucumbers they are, bought them from a local nursery, but they outlasted all of my national pickling cucumbers and Wisconsin pickling cucumbers , so I figured I better save some seeds.
Those seeds are worth saving. You can collect those seeds.

are ziplock bags, envelopes, or spice jars better to store them in?
Sealed with zips or lids is best

So, are all the seeds immature, before the cucumber turns full yellow? I just harvested seeds from a half yellow cucumber today... Then looked it up as an afterthought. They look "decent sized" but idk if they are really ready.
Well the can mature to full size while green but well into their growth. They finish up while yellowing out.

Question: My cucumber got to a big size and I harvested it green. After sitting in my kitchen, completely forgotten about, it turned yellow. Will the seeds still be viable to plant?
Not 100% sure but most fruits use the fruit to keep the seeds maturing.

Can you dry them in the sun and use them this year after they're dry?
I guess in theory. But they do rot and take a while to dry since there is so much to them.

How do you keep the paper towel from sticking to the seeds?
They do. Coffee filter is better

If you wash them with a solution of Hydrogen Peroxide prior to setting out to dry on greaseproof or baking paper, this lets the seeds dry without sticking and also prevents them from carrying harmful fungi and bacteria to your next planting.... been doing this for over 50 years... simple extra precaution that is definitely worth it IMO.
Yes the orgasmictomato is my variety bred tomato in Australia.... Commercial grower of Tomatoes and other veg. 😋😄
Mylar envelopes are the best storage method for long term storage ( heat sealed ), vacuum packed. but ziplock bags also are good with data note inside for short term use also... all easily bought from ebay.....
Seeds decay from radiation as exposure to oxygen...and heat... so keeping seeds in Mylar in the freezer is great news... IMO
Rabbit looked sick. may have been injured or have a wolf worm (parasite) in its side. Notice the side has a swelling.
Yep. There is a lump on the side. I let him in the garden to eat. We have a red tail hawk. I wonder if it was attacked at some point.

I'm guessing this only works for heirloom varietys. Hybrids won't grow true like heirlooms will
Well the collecting of seeds works for any plant. The seeds are viable but depending the generation of hybrid, they may not be true to form.

Mature cucumbers really look like melons, which they are. Interesting, I’ve always saw cumbers as it is but now the realization that we’re just harvesting them “unripe” is kind of bazaar. 🤯
That is true.

Warning: You cannot do this with hybrid plants. Only open pollinated plants.
Well you are right. However, some hybrids are stable cultivars. And you can save the seeds of hybrids but you dont get a plant true to form most of the time.

Just be aware that if you leave just one cucumber on the vine long enough to become fully ripe, your cucumber plant won't produce any more cucumbers. The plant will think it did its job of reproduction and then stop.
That is mostly true.
