I've been harvesting mine for about 3 weeks. It's completely taken over my 4'x2' bed and is vining out into the yard and climbing my neighbor's fence. She also gardens, so we have a rule that any plants of ours that end up in the other's yard are fair game...my cucumbers are making up for all the free roses I've been getting from her the past couple years! I have bachelor's button flowers right by my plant and she has daisies out right now, so the bees just hop from flower to cucumber flower and back.
We get lots of greenhouse grown slicer cukes here in Ontario Canada and they're all wrapped in plastic. A lot of people think it's super wasteful but it's actually a really efficient way to transport them and protect them from damage and dehydration which would lead to food waste. They are able to prevent a surprising amount of damage despite being so thin and seemingly useless lol and can extend their shelf life by a week! I read an article that convinced me that they were actually a really good temporary solution until we can come up with a more sustainable version (which a couple companies in my province are actually working on!)
Nice. My wife and I just got our first small harvest of large cucumbers today (about 5 really nice-sized ones). I regret not trellising them. They're spreading out all over the place and are enmeshed with our honeydew melons. Oh well.... first time growing them. We're learning!

One thing I never hear people talking about is the texture difference of pickling cukes. I love how crispy and how they almost shatter when you chew them. And they're often so sweet! Haven't grown slicing cukes yet though, so maybe it's the same for them?

In zone 6b and just harvested a handful of cucamelons from Botanical Interests. First time growing from seed and these things are so adorably tasty. Nice snacks in our container garden!
Love cucumbers! I like to peel, chop into chunks and add them to stew…also, fry them sliced with zucchini, green beans, peas, potatoes and any other vegetables. I also toss in mushrooms and only add salt, pepper and garlic powder. Yum.

I just did a quick pickle on 3lbs of lemon cucumbers. It's my first year growing them, and they grow very well. I agree, the taste is kind of bland when eaten raw.

I am having a bumper year for cucumbers. I put in a low polytunnel in the spring, which means they're getting more heat despite the relatively cool summer this year. I'm in coastal BC, and lack of heat is an issue here. I am also trying a new variety, minime, which is parthenocarpic and produces lots of tiny cucumbers, and I put in a couple of spikes with pop bottles to keep them better watered in between waterings. I am getting a lot less funny shaped cucumbers, and more nice ones, as well as simply getting more of them.
Last year I did well in Cucumbers ..but this year ..I’m like an EXPERT!!!…lol I have made so many pickles 🥒… I have done Armenian cucumbers, national pickling, Boston, pickling and alphabet. Those are more fresh, but I’m already on my second or third succession of pickles. I did also a couple of hybrid ones that are coming up but whatever I get I get I’m going to move onto fall planting. my confidence is much better now I’ve given so many of my neighbors fresh or pickled cucumbers. My refrigerator is full. I even harvest some yesterday but fresh I still see so many coming along maybe tomorrow day after I’ll pick them but it’s just I feel really good next year. I’m gonna do a little bit different, but I’m gonna try to focus. I’m not as great as all of y’all guys, but I try to focus on one type every year tomatoes with tomatoes probably had about 19 plants all around this year‘s cucumbers. Next year I’m gonna focus more on peppers. Bell pepper jalapeño all types of peppers. Im in (Houston, Texas). I watch y’all plenty 🌱🌱🌱
Don't forget elaborate cages, noise makers, and strongly scented peppermint or coyote pee sprays to deter the groundhogs lol. And a whole lot of willpower to overcome groundhog related set backs. I had to re start cucumbers three times this year after failing several times over the past few years because the local miss groundhog and her annual baby LOVE cucumbers and up until this year they always bested me. This year I 1. Put them in pots on my porch. 2. Put up baby gates on the porch. 3. Put bells on the baby gates. 4. Put up wind chimes. 5. Put in a solar owl. 6. Put that thick wire 'netting' thats more stable than chicken wire around the plants in the pots. 7. Put chicken wire around the pots. 8. Started spraying a homemade peppermint and lavender spray on my porch and 9. Spreading fistfulls of cayenne pepper around my porch every week or so. And I finally after three years have two plants that weren't eaten. I lost a few to slugs alas because I was so focused on the groundhogs that I forgot to deter slugs. But I've been collection eggshells to ground up and spread around the plants next year. (Since thats the only deterrent that has kept the local slugs at bay from my mums.) Why am I so determined? Cos I love cucumber salad for lunch when its hot out. Its cooling, filling, and refreshing.
Despite what many say about transplanting, my transplanted cucerbits have always produced fruit way faster than my direct down seeds. Always. I have pumpkin and cuc Vines growing all the way up my sliding doors inside in pots come spring.

This recipe is something i grew up snacking on! My mother did sliced cucumbers, vinegar and sugar though. You marinade it and drain the excess liquid after. Side note: My dad is Philipino and very much disliked this recipe 😂

Unfortunately I gave up on growing cucumbers after they got destroyed by cucumber beetles two years ago, which then spread to my wax gourds. I had gotten Eureka F1 seeds since I heard they were the most disease resistant. Well, they are, with the sole exception of bacterial wilt spread by cucumber beetles. I hope everyone else has better luck than I did.
Hey Kevin! I’d love to see how you maintain the fertilization of such a large garden. Do you just add compost? Or use granular? Is there a secret to making it go faster?
At the end of each season, I add one bag of compost to all my raised beds, then cover them with a few inches of fall leaves. They will break down over the winter, or nongrowing months wherever you are. Just be aware that depends on what you grow, certain mulch during the growing season can provide habitat for slugs and soil pests. Some of my beds have adequate nutrients from just doing this each year that I don't have to add extra fertilizers. As for fertilizer, there are lots of options. I've been gardening over a decade in different states and after trying many different things, I've merged to exclusively using Osmocote in my garden, which is a slow release synthetic fertilizer that release nutrients over 6 months (8lbs bag pink version). I use it for every type of plants. It is clean in that it works for indoor as well. The only downside with this product's technology is they don't have calcium included, so without amending with calcium additionaly you will get bottom end rot for your tomato and bellpeppers particularly in containers. So you have to also get a bottle of Cal-Mag, while is a bit expensive it goes a long way, you only need to dilute a small teaspoon per gallon and apply it a few times per growing season. Don't over apply, because too much cal and mag in the soil is detrimental to the soil and plants uptake ability. Osmocote is expensive to get locally, but they go on sale online from time to time. There is another similar product that is cheaper per ounce, Schultz Tomato & Vegetable Slow Release Granular Plant Food, if you can get it locally, it lacks both magnesium and calcium. For organic method, Down to Earth fertilizer is a good one. I like Migardener's Trifecta fertilizer.
I'm in zone 10a growing cucumbers for the first time. I got the pickling kind from the nursery. they're place in a full sun spot, and have plently of water. I am seeing that the leaves are turning yellow. I don't see any powdery mildew or anything yet.. what could be happening? There is some fruit set so that's exciting. Great video-thanks so much! Did not know cucumbers were one of those plants that inhibits growth next to them. Question-why are my “newborn” cucumbers turning yellow then brown?!? I got one great cucumber but the rest are not developing. Plant seems healthy. Watering often but it is very well drained.
We are struggling with ‘wilting’ cucumbers. :( We have shade cloth to keep hot sun off in the afternoon sun, and have irrigation to keep well watered. No signs of beetles, so not sure what the problem is. 😢
how tall of a trellis do slicing cucumbers need? i thought they vined higher than what we see here. i have poinsetta 76 and spacemaster i think. I assume the pickling cucumber doesnt vine as tall but wanted to maximize vine potential. for instance i do have cattle panels that i wasnt going to arch but just do tee pee but they are 50" x 8' or 50" x 16'.
Kevin, I am in a dire situation. You see, I am facing financial issues and thought that having a garden would be a great way to reduce my grocery bills. The only issue being that I am new to gardening and have no idea how to properly take care of the massive garden I set up in my backyard during May. I was fortunate enough to get a few squash, pepper, and tomato plants (that are now beginning to flower). Now I don’t know what to do, and I am looking for other plants I could possibly grow to save myself some money. I will appreciate any kind of advice.
Green beans grow quickly, keep them picked and you should get several flushes right up to 1st frost. Brassica's, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Broccoli are all cold hardy and grow into the 1st snow. Beets grow quickly. Can or freeze as many Tomato's as you can, and pick all the green ones to ripen inside day before 1st frost is forecast If frozen whole, you can make sauce as you go. Thaw and slide skin off, in the pot they go. Chop and freeze your peppers in zip lock bags, take out what's needed. They wont freeze whole. Carrots grow well into the cold, chop/slice/freeze. We are crashing head long into the season of abundance. Prices at the farmers markets can be cheaper for buying in bulk any veg you can't grow now. Many farms also have roadside stands also, and if you're really up against it there's always the food banks. Share and trade with neighbors any abundance's you realize. Start some herbs, many can be propagated from cuttings and save seed whenever you can. Saved seeds are a "no charge" garden. Only save heirloom seeds. Make a list of everything you eat for the next 6-8 months so you know you need to grow next year. That will make your garden planning easier. Sorry to be so wordy. Whenever I plant cucumbers, they seem to germinate fine, and will grow maybe 4 inches, but then they stall. Many times, they will flower, get yellow leaves and die, before we're able to get any harvest. This has happened year after year and no matter the seed type, so it's obviously something I'm doing wrong. Can anyone give some advice?? I love fresh cukes!
I love cucumbers but unfortunately so do my local squirrels. Lost all my baby cucumbers to them AND they've been eating the new shoots preventing them from getting taller :(

Certain varieties don't like it too hot. I grow Armenian cucumbers for that reason. Try shade cloths

where do you get the trellis?
Great video-thanks so much! Did not know cucumbers were one of those plants that inhibits growth next to them. Question-why are my “newborn” cucumbers turning yellow then brown?!? I got one great cucumber but the rest are not developing. Plant seems healthy. Watering often but it is very well drained.

We are struggling with ‘wilting’ cucumbers. :( We have shade cloth to keep hot sun off in the afternoon sun, and have irrigation to keep well watered. No signs of beetles, so not sure what the problem is. 😢

how tall of a trellis do slicing cucumbers need? i thought they vined higher than what we see here. i have poinsetta 76 and spacemaster i think. I assume the pickling cucumber doesnt vine as tall but wanted to maximize vine potential. for instance i do have cattle panels that i wasnt going to arch but just do tee pee but they are 50" x 8' or 50" x 16'.
Kevin, I am in a dire situation. You see, I am facing financial issues and thought that having a garden would be a great way to reduce my grocery bills. The only issue being that I am new to gardening and have no idea how to properly take care of the massive garden I set up in my backyard during May. I was fortunate enough to get a few squash, pepper, and tomato plants (that are now beginning to flower). Now I don’t know what to do, and I am looking for other plants I could possibly grow to save myself some money. I will appreciate any kind of advice.
Green beans grow quickly, keep them picked and you should get several flushes
right up to 1st frost. Brassica's, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Broccoli are all cold hardy
and grow into the 1st snow. Beets grow quickly. Can or freeze as many Tomato's
as you can, and pick all the green ones to ripen inside day before 1st frost is forecast
If frozen whole, you can make sauce as you go. Thaw and slide skin off, in the pot
they go. Chop and freeze your peppers in zip lock bags, take out what's needed. They
wont freeze whole. Carrots grow well into the cold, chop/slice/freeze.
We are crashing head long into the season of abundance. Prices at the farmers
markets can be cheaper for buying in bulk any veg you can't grow now. Many farms
also have roadside stands also, and if you're really up against it there's always the
food banks. Share and trade with neighbors any abundance's you realize.
Start some herbs, many can be propagated from cuttings and save seed whenever
you can. Saved seeds are a "no charge" garden. Only save heirloom seeds.
Make a list of everything you eat for the next 6-8 months so you know you need
to grow next year. That will make your garden planning easier. Sorry to be so wordy.
I remember being hungry a few times.

@@megganthegarden I accidentally put 5 next to each other in my garden bed and it just took everything over. They’re on the ground. I would definitely trellis them next time

I just harvested a 2 pounder out of the garden
Some Japanese cucumbers will begin to visibly shrink due to loss of moisture unless they are wrapped in plastic wrap.
Whenever I plant cucumbers, they seem to germinate fine, and will grow maybe 4 inches, but then they stall. Many times, they will flower, get yellow leaves and die, before we're able to get any harvest.
This has happened year after year and no matter the seed type, so it's obviously something I'm doing wrong. Can anyone give some advice?? I love fresh cukes!
I cant direct sow the larger seeds due to something eating them before they sprout.

Why my cucumber has shape of chili? Bulky on top and narrow on bottom. Its not that big enough but that kinda frust me
