The other benefit of saving seeds is that they're from a plant that is slowly acclimating itself to your environment animal grows stronger with each new season
You can also just dice tomatoes and put them on top of your own dirt mixture you like and place in cool dark area over fall winter and the gel on them seeds keep them safe and come next season you push them down in dirt on pot place in window
It's great to grow for yourself but many others like myself want to make growing communities where we can trade. You can't grow everything. Get a community of growers together and have a huge variety of basically free food. We have set up a market in a small town of 2500 with about 200 growers and small livestock growers and it's been wonderful. We trade amongst ourselves and people that dont want to trade can purchase. Why deal with political beurocrats that want to control our food prices when we have the power to produce our own food?
That's the way to go. Im the only one in my neighbourhood that grows for the table. Ive tried to talk others into it, but they couldnt be bothered. Of course, they dont mind asking to have what i grow. Ive got it down to a science now and u can grow enough produce to use fresh, and preserve several months worth of food in 100 square feet or less
I agree 100%, I have been saying it would be excellent if you could get the support of communities. Even if it starts out small, you could start raising cattle and chickens and if someone doesn't want to mess with animals they can grow a garden and the people that have animals could trade eggs and chicken or beef for vegetables. And like you said, if you need more of something you just want to purchase it you can buy it. You could have someone get a dairy cow for milk. It would be so nice to get back to the old days where communities relied on each other and you know who is growing your food and what's going into it instead of just going to Walmart to get the absolute nastiest junk available because otherwise you have to pay 10 times more to get it from somewhere reputable. I love this idea and I would love to see more of it spreading across this country. Count me In!

Welcome. Usually a few days is good enough to dry any seed. I leave them a week just to be sure. Don't put them in direct sunlight though as that will destroy the coating on the seed.
Sir, there’s one part of seeds that you haven’t spoken about here: potato seed. When I first started off growing vegetables, some very experienced farmers told me that the seed that comes from the little tomato at the top of the potatoes, is useless. That turns out to be false, and a great way to preserve your potato without having to save too many of your actual potatoes for seed for the next year, which could make a real difference in the leaner years. It also gives a person a great way to select traits that they like in a variety to emphasize, or to develop. Too Many people believe this lie; In my area, most people that grow potatoes believe that they have to go get new seed or order it every year. They don’t realize that they can work with the seed. As a result, over the last few years, many, many people have told me that the river ride is that they cannot get any longer, which were very reliable for them. Perhaps you wouldn’t mind speaking about that, and even possibly demonstrating how to produce your own potato from these seeds?
Question about seeds. What about cross pollination? I grow a variety of tomatoes, cucumbers, watermelon, squash, and zucchini. Do I have to worry about true breeding? I know that cucumbers and melons may cross polinate and the fruit isn't desirable. Is this a big problem for your garden and how do you determine what isn't a viable food option for yourself? Good question. I have not worried about it too much since I am growing for survival essentially. The best way to avoid a cross pollination issue is to keep fruit and veg from the same families at least 100ft apart from one another. That is not practical for most though.
I am not sure because the coating around the seeds really needs to be removed first. If they were dehydrated, then that coating was not removed. Try it. I don't know if it will work.

You have to water them until they go to seed and the seeds naturally develop and dry up.
shouldn't you do a fermentation with all seeds that have the gelatinous coating like the tomatoes? as in the melons, pumpkins, cukes, squashes etc.?
No. This works for me perfectly.

You air dry the seeds? And how do you store them? I thought you had to dehydrate seed.
Yes, all air dried. Do not put them in a dehydrator because the heat will damage them. Store them in airtight containers in a dark cool place.
The issue with carrots is that they easily cross pollinate. You need to be aware of that.

Only heirloom seeds are good for saving and producing the same plant the next growing season.
So fundimental
It is, yet so many have lost the skills for this.
The plants will continue to produce throughout a season. You won’t get 100 at once from a few plants. You’ll get 10 or 15 at a time.
Or succession plant the plants. Only plant a few then a few weeks later plant more, then so on.
