Venetta Fields was already a legendary backing singer in 1975, when she and Carleena Williams joined Pink Floyd on their tour of Dark Side of the Moon and recorded backing vocals on ' Shine On You Crazy Diamond' - for the 'Wish You Were Here ' album.
She had already performed with Aretha Franklin, Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Rolling Stones, Boz Scaggs, Humble Pie and mor3e before meeting Pink fFoyd.
Venetta was interviewed in 2011 in Sydney, Australia, by Greg Swanborough for the documentary "Pink Floyd: The Story of Wish You were Here "- directed by John Edginton. These are the unused outtakes from that interview.

What a lovely woman and interview she gave
This woman should have her own section in the Rock and roll Hall of fame. 👍👌✌️
I nominate her
What a classy lady and a GREAT story teller as well..
Her description of David's guitar is amazing.
This woman’s gratitude is off the charts. Beautiful energy ❤❤❤
an artist through and through - what a charming woman
Really hope she writes a book. Great, clear communicator. (Gilmour's) "Guitar sparkled over everything". "Gilmour brought soul". She really gets it. BTW, only the very best of the best get invited to work with Steely Dan. Says a lot about how good she is. What a phenomenal life this phenomenal contributor has had. Very happy for her. So level headed. Wish they would have asked her what she thought of Claire Tory' work on The Great Gig in the Sky.
Now I have to go listen to the songs with the lady in them.
Love her comments on David.
She should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 😁
She is so professional and an exceptional story teller with an incredible memory.
Why is there no yearly gala where background singers are getting the praise and attention they deserve
She has a diverse catalog because she is the top of the heap. When you’re that good, music is music.
G'day guys, WHAT a gracious LADY. We were so lucky to have Venetta in our life's, such a lovely lady, fantastic voice, thanks Venetta for being you, coming to Australia, wrapped to see and hear you on youtube, seeing you has added joy to my life thank you again, all the very best Ms Fields Peter
Also plyed with the Steve Marriot and Humble Pie known as the Black Berries. She is a legend.
What a lovely woman. Pretty intelligent too. Love her.
What, did you assume she was fick, Cherrill face ? A great interview, just hope it was'nt " sugar coated ".
My second concert evert was Boz Scaggs at Memorial Drive in Adelaide. I was about 12 at the time and I can remember being absolutely spellbound by his black American backing singer. Having never seen a black American woman in the flesh before. Nearly 50 years later I find out it was Venetta! She is and was amazing. What a career!
Brilliant singer.
what a beautiful soul 🙏 spoken like a true pro.
Isn't she wonderful?! What a sweetie...I sure hope to find more stories from her. She became centric to all sorts of bands, music styles and historic, iconic events around people most of us moon over. She is to backup singers as Steve Lukather is to session musicians!
@rusty9129 Or Larry Carlton, who she probably met working with Steely Dan.
Pink Floyd's backing vocals are so hauntingly beautiful. Timeless legendary music. Aliens will find it in an archeological expedition in the future and think maybe we were all right.
What a great woman and what a life.
Great interview and perspective from a semi-observer with a solid musical talent. Venetta gives a unique take on Floyd that adds depth to their legacy. 🙏
What an amazing singer. Could listen to her for hours describing her history with Pink Floyd, especially Sid Barrett. An absolute legend! Much love 🤍🎤🎶
This women is a gem I could listen to her all day, not only does she have amazing recall you can see she has a pure soul and her skin is beautiful!
Thought I might watch this for a couple of minutes but then couldn’t stop watching. Fabulous insight. Really interesting lovely woman. And of course I’ve heard her voice so many times and never knew who she was.
What a sweet lady. I am so glad she shared this. Her work was most excellent, as was that of the other backing vocalists.
Wow what a great woman what a career beautiful voice I never thought I'd see the person that was singing on those albums absolutely fantastic lady
She is a book you can't put down.
Thank you for providing this interview! Absolutely fascinating woman with a great story!
My pleasure!
So interesting! What a different angle to hear about the best band ever! Thank you so much Venetta for contributing to music that had so much meaning in my life!
Some of the most wonderful backing singers ever appear on so many Pink Floyd songs. An absolutely integral part of what makes Pink Floyd so fantastic. My favorite music and band of all time. Miss Venetta is a treasure and beautiful voice.👍✌️
What a gracious woman, a fine interview.
How lovely is this woman. God bless you Vanetta, and how lucky we are that she’s an Aussie.
What an awesome career she had. I love how humble, yet appreciative she is of her career and the babe bands that she has helped with her gift of singing. God Bless this woman!
I'll never forget seeing the show at Milwaukee County Stadium in July, 1975. It was the best concert I ever saw.
No shit...geez I bet! Sadly I was only 12 at the time haha...Animals..?? Or no, Wish you were Here..?? I worked with a guy years ago, he saw the back in the day. He said him and his buddies were on Acid. He said when the plane crashed they almost lost it, totally freaked them out! Do you remember that..?
I enjoyed her enthusiasm about the description of how meticulously in recording and on the road with Pink Floyd She has an excellent memory abiut all of this. 14:35
What a cool lady. Considering all the artists she's worked with, who made some of my favorite music, she has been a huge part of my life, and I didn't even know it!
Wow! This woman is such a beautiful soul
What a stupendous career.
Gosh, Venetta is a walking encyclopeadia of rock and soul. A great interview with a great lady.
Venetta is WONDERFUL! What a voice. Spectacular vocals.
Vocals are 90% of the Magic in performance. The Backup Vocals are the key to the Frontman. Ma'am you are so awesome and talented. Thank you for your massive contributions to the many recordings that you have been involved with!
those are the documentaries I love to see, the hard working backing singers and their insights for us regular folks. It wouldn't have sounded as beautiful without them.
Wow! Some pretty cool input here. Very interesting to hear her stressing how important Gilmour was for her personal experience with them. Even she knew there was friction. Really enjoyable to hear how it felt for someone who was completely new to all of it. I can't even imagine! Thanks for the upload. Really appreciated.
My pleasure !
Her voice on Big Gig is so beautiful, I always thought I could understand that piece of vocal music better than songs with lyrics.
If you are referring to "The Great Gig In The Sky"--it wasn't her singing on the album.
@@Moamanly Yeah, I realized that. She seems to imply she sang the background vocals on that too?
@@geinikan1kanin concert, i think.
This talented lady has lived a fantastic life, she is well spoken and great to listen to. Thank you!
My pleasure!
Venetta Fields Wikipedia blew me away! She's lived the life of ten people...
Thank you for yr contributions to to Rock an Roll
You MADE those songs with the bands you sang with! I often said that without you backup singers bands like Pink Floyd wouldn't have been nearly as spectacular!
Agree 💯 percent
What a beautiful, interesting and talented Lady!
Venetta is beyond amazing, what a crazy great talent!
Finally, I get to see the angel with the heavenly voice. Thank you.
Thank you for your musical journey! I was a fan of yours before I ever saw your face or knew your name! I sang for over 30 years and you and the Blackberries were my singing gold standard🌞
The mix of talented people, different styles and sounds had no choice but to be legendary.
Thoroughly enjoyable interview, many thanks. Nice to see the perspective of someone not in the band yet directly involved in the music. Her description of the band arguing being very ‘dignified, upstanding and very English’ was hilarious.

Hello dearest 👋.
How are you doing today?
What a great interview - an all too rare (and very grounded) inside view from an outside performer. Not surprised Dave is the one she felt afinity to......
WOW a storied past if there ever was one. I would love to talk to her.
Fantastic interview love her points of view from a different angle
Glad you enjoyed it!
Fabulous lady.
World would be a much better place if there were more people like her. Fascinating interview.
Yes stunning..and gracious..what a gem
What a fascinating lady! Great stories you have. And you’ve sung with so many bands. You must be very good! I’m love to hear you sing. 💯
Hello dearest 👋.
Yeah she is. I do like her way of song too. How are you doing?
Awesome interview and a great great woman , thank you so much
Wow! The real deal right there! Saw her with the Floyd. She’s a Goddess!
Legend ❤
Holy crap...all those different artists AND she was one of the "Oreo's" in A Star is Born?!?!
What an extremely informative and knowledgeable lady, her memory and recollections are superb!..an amazing raconteur I could listen to her for hours, has she wrote a book?
Venetta sang background on a lot of Steely Dan songs. Black Cow was my favorite.
David's everybody's favourite. That says a lot!
Lovely Lady!
Wow! Love listening to her. Seems a wonderful person. Should write a book, or make a move on her life.
What a sweetheart, she provides such interesting insight into the band.
Awesomeness
Superb video! Venetta was a pleasure to watch.
Glad you enjoyed it!
She’s such a beautiful, talented, interesting and delightfully intriguing woman. What an amazing life she’s lived! 🩵
Excellent interview. Venetta's testimony is relevant and very interesting. Thank you.
Love her!
What a beautiful and interesting woman!! Loved hearing her stories of singing with all the greats. Such a blessed life.
What a fascinating lady.
What a lovely lady ~ 🌟
she must have sung in every genre of music ! could listen to her memories for hours...beautiful...
Her awesomeness shines right through!
Wow, this is so cool. Her list of credits reads like a history of popular music.
I bet she could tell a lot of awesome stories, given all the artists she's worked with. Not to mention, it's really good to know her name, since I've been hearing her voice for pretty much my whole life. Thank you for posting this interview, and introducing us to Venetta Fields! Much appreciated!
Ms Vinetta I love you.
You've got to respect the fact that this woman and a few talented other gave us all chills at one time or another. Sound like she had David's blessing too. Amazing but not sure if she has completely grasps the significance of her contribution she has made to Pink Floyd and not to mention all of us. She actually talks third party as if it was just a another gig... lmao I can tell you shes was hand picked. Aretha Franklin wasn't a joke. Had her duckies in a row and didn't play with hacks. Very demanding person to work with. Her expectations tell you exactly who this woman is. ✌
Amazing Lady. A great talent 😊. Worked with the best ! 🎤
Yes, thanks to Venetta, and all the ladies, who sung with Pink Floyd....❤😔👍
She’s beautiful and so talented.
Legendary. Venetta's Light shines through all of the Music too! Thank You & So much Love! 💗
What an intriguing , smart lady - and a great insight into the characters and styles, involved in the creation of classics
What a career. Did get to see ( hear ) her with Pink Floyd.
Great story
Oh my goodness! This kind of oral history is GOLD! It's obvious Venetta established herself as someone whom artists could depend on to elevate whatever project they enlisted her for. Her using the word "lorries" for trucks was so cute - her time with that certain English band certainly rubbed off. And being "best buddies" with Dave Gilmour - well by that point my eyes started getting a little wet .
Toni Tenille also said she enjoyed working with the lads on The Wall.
You're very good young lady!
Great interview!!
Damn I could listen to her telling the story of her life all day. It's incredible how many ways she effected music then and still now. Bravo! Thanks for sharing
My pleasure!
Fascinating to hear her perspective.
World class lovely lady giving us a decades overdue treat of the perspective of the back up singers so crucial to the Floyd sound. But Venetta worked with all the most iconic names in music. I can listen to her tell stories for hours on end if I could sit with her. Lovely, classy woman.
There are some great recordings of the 1975 tour, a careful listen reveals the incredible work Vanetta & Carleena did during those concerts.
I suspect the boys knew they were loaded with talent, adding backing vocals to songs that had never had them, until that tour. Well done, indeed !!
