As you say, humour is subjective - I find Eddie's style light hearted and quite whimsical, and love it that he's telling proper jokes, something which is almost completely missing from comedy these days. If you find this bleak I'd be interested to find out what you think of Monkey Dust or Jam (the follow-up by Chris Morris to Brass Eye).
They were different times as you say. They were better times and the people were less stressed and less afraid of scams etc. Happier to laugh at daft jokes.
No-one ever took as long to tell a joke as Eddie, but his timing was just impeccable. One of the all time greats.
