  • Paint stripper that works is hard to find, so I thought I would give this Klean Strip Sprayable paint stripper a try on a 65 Thunderbird front fender, with multiple coats of paint.

Thank you for the tip, that worked better than I imagined (I've heard the new stuff isn't as good). Many, many, years ago I helped a friend strip a front end he had bought. We had the same experience with the red oxide factory primer. He said - "we've hit it with stripper, scraped it, and cleaned it. If it's still hanging on like this, I say we scuff it, prime it, and paint it". The parts looked great for the next several years he owned it. Once again, many thanks to ~ Chuck

      Your welcome Chuck!
I agree, if it is still in good condition, reuse it. 😊

hi Alvin, I follow a Canadian furniture restorer on YT, John's furniture repair, and she gets excellent results with a stripper made by the swing paint co only available in Canada and I think easy to find in Canada. the stripper is called circa 1850 paint stripper and is thin so easily sprayable though she usually applies by brush. perhaps that would pull up the red oxide primer. carry on. thanks

I'll check into that David, I think I have seen that Circa 1850 at Home Hardware. Thank you for the heads up! 😊

    Hiya Alvin!
I’ll definitely use that on some extra body parts on my ‘57. Thanks for reminding me there are other ways besides polycarbonate discs and media blasting. That is a lot less mess.

Hey Troy, I think this will work well in those really tight places where sanding is very difficult, fingers crossed that I just didn't get luck with this test piece. 🙄

That worked out pretty good. I tried to use some chemical strippers on my brothers vw bug and they just didn’t work that well so I sand blasted. I was fortunate with my T-bird that most of the paint had faded away and sanding and blasting was faily easy. Looks like you have a lot of work ahead of you. Thanks for the product demo.

Hi Matt, I haven't had much luck in the past with paint strippers either, but this one surprised me. 😊

Hello Alvin. That stuff works real well. I bought the same brand but gel type that didn't seem to work as well as what you just showed. I found that the aircraft paint remover in spray form worked very well, but it's pricey. Thanks for showing! That fender looks like the best part of the car.

      Hey George,
Yes, it worked better than I thought it would, and I quite like that it's sprayable.
Lol...that front fender is the best part of this car, likely only because it had been replaced sometime after the car was built.

Going to base coat and clear coat? Or single stage paint. Clear coat is nice once you get the hang of it. Plus you need 2 part clear coat not the crappy cheap stuff that comes in a spray can, although Spray max has a 2k two part clear in a can but has not much shelf life once activated.

I'm not decides on the paint yet, I'm not fond of the look of base coat/clear coat on these old classics...but on the other hand it's far more durable than the single stage stuff. I've seen a couple of people do a combination of clear and single stage, I have to dig into that more before spending the money.
