Mom is ambi, granddad was ambi, I'm ambi, spouse is lefty..... Daughter is ambi. Love love love finding left-handed every day items. There used to be a place on Pier 39 in San Francisco called the "Left Handed Store", not sure if it's still there or changed hands? (Hehe forgive the pun)
I’ve watched so many of your ASMR videos, too nervous to watch a normal one out of fear that you’d be a “too good for everyone” type of potter personality with that talent... this was the first time I heard you speak and I’m so glad you’re so chill and sweet and hilarious!!! Subscribed immediately, thank you for this awesome content you’ve re-sparked my love for ceramics 😭
I would love to try this but there is a small issue that I don't know pottery making art.....but I love watching these videos....they are kind of relaxing
Don't let fear or doubt or self- doubt hold you back! Pretend you are in your eighties and you still want to play in the clay what do you have to loose except excuses? Go for it and jump into that clay it is addictive, relaxing, like water for the soul! I promise the fun is in the making and everyone can make a piece of clay turn into personal expression so stop holding back and dive in feet first. Have fun too.
I see this is kinda old but have you thought of making it a double handed hand warming mug like the mug it's self would probably need to be larger but would that seem like a good idea for the cold season they would probably sell like theirs no tomorrow hell I'd probably buy a few
Yay!!! You posted it! So I was impatient and made some in an hourglass shape and did them pretty much the same way and took them to my final bazaar two days ago and they all sold! People do love love love them so I made more last night but more like your shape but I just did a strait angled slit and it works too! But I like the crescent shape cut. I’m gonna go back and make more! I totally agree though they are not as fun to make as other things! Thanks dude! I’ve been waiting for this!!!
Your's is the only video, I've ever seen, for how to make these. I've seen the form, and even had students ask how they could make them, but all I had was how I'd do it. So thanks for posting.
It was around 2 years ago when I fell in love with pottery/all things pottery. And I love how you're not only good at it, but it shows that you love it and get people hyped about it. You've gained a subscriber!
HOW DOES THIS MAN NOT HAVE MORE SUBS?! please keep doing this sir!! your silly energy is infectious and after watching this video i am actually reconsidering art and design as a possible career path...possibly..... n_n''
I am so happy to see this video. I searched a few months ago, but no one had instructions out there. They do look time consuming, but worth trying them out...but will have to be after the holidays! I might try both ways..alit in the mug and like your other viewer suggested, a flap on the outside of the dent. Can’t wait to try it.
Tell us how you really feel about those mugs!🤣 I have never desired one of those mugs, but I have seen how excited people are by them. Now I know why they're so expensive if you see them!
You are so funny!! I have made these and they are a pain in the butt! But people do love them. You make them different but I don't think it's any easier than my way. Thanks for sharing!
Glad I'm not the only one who uses my fingers to apply slip. I'll have to try this. I think the time I spend making and attaching handles would be equivalent to attaching the slab, but we'll see.
You’re hilarious, thanks so much for sharing.. unfortunately classes at the college ends on the 11th. So I’m going to do it come January. Also made the chip and dip bowls. It Might end up for a one serving size lmao thanks again.
Cool idea definitely will try. Something I did this year and maybe another idea for you is we got into soap making too so the family/kids made soaps to give as gifts from them, so we also threw "soap dishes" on the wheel to include with the soaps. Basically just a big almost flat coasters (very little or no outside edge turn up) that we used a small tool to make fairly tall raised circles in the bottom of or spirals. Just a thought.
I’ve been waiting for this video. Yeah! I think I will try the method of pushing in the mug and adding to the outside. Maybe do the alteration while it’s still on the wheel in order to keep the round shape at the top and then add the patch on the outside after it has set up a little. Worth a try. Read all the comments and replies. I always get such a shot of joy when I watch your videos. So inspiring! It’s raining and cold here. No snow so I’ll just go play in the mud now! Merry Christmas from Mudcreek Clayworks in Texas.
Very cool! I've been waiting for this vid, I'm mainly handbuilding while I hone my wheel skills. So if you don't mind I'm going to take this brilliance, adjust it to suit and run with it! Thank you!
I teach art. Love these never seen before. If you have any left of what you made on here I’d love to buy one as example for my students. I love having all different artists works for kids to see. Love your Video!
I have two hand warmer mugs and literally yesterday I was staring at one of them and analyzing it because I couldn't figure out how it was made! I started looking at how to glaze pottery and sure enough this video comes up! I didnt read the title, it just popped up! UA-cam is in my brain! Thank you for making this video! It stinks that these are a pain but these mugs really are the best!
Thanks for the video. Have you ever thought of or tried placing the slab on the outside of the mug to make the sleeve instead of cutting the mug and pushing it outwards?
I enjoy watching you throw. As a tea drinker I wont be making this, as tea is so much hotter than coffee and my hand would burn! But I really like the idea. Thanks for showing us :-)
Pottery video pops up on my feed. Super cute guy. Didn’t even watch the first minute before subscribing 👌🏻 Lol but seriously so cool! Love pottery and clay, can’t wait to watch more videos!
Jonthepotter 😂 these comments are adorable - shoot for 100k i’d make it happen too & I’ve never thrown anything in my life. ha! Great stuff tho, I’m thinking tea drinkers could use a little cloth insert to fit between the inside slab & their fingers... idk lol someone mentioned in a previous comment that tea is HOTT & would likely burn, but with a little buffer... well, food for thought. I would love to do this for my mom but yeesh its way too late to start learning for this Christmas. There’s always next year. Cheers! ☕️
Hi Jon , appreciate the demonstration of the handwarming mugs they are so unique and cool. A bit more difficult to make so thankyou for showing the technique yo us. Have an enjoyable Christmas:) Bye Pet.
If you wanted to make a universal mug that'd work for both lefties and righties, you could cut both curves and just make the slab to cover the whole cover both!
I apologize because I'm not a potter, but if you'd like these mugs without inserting a new piece inside Jon, then is it possible to bend your mug in that mid-stage inwards to get the finger indent, and then to attach the outer finger covering as the separate piece instead? The inside won't be a perfect circle; however you might save some sanity and surely you can make that shape your own and awesome!
This is so hilarious! I have less than no desire to make these mugs, but I get requests for them all the time! I am a small country potter who only sells at my local farmers market, and I bet I've had seven people ask me for these damn mugs.
This is the first video of yours I’ve ever seen, your enthusiasm is GREAT!! I hit subscribe due to all of the little Bob Ross-esque pin points! You’re great, glad I stumbled upon you!
I was ln holiday in France once and the couple that owns that house we stayed at, also have a little pottery studio? And the first time I was there I made a little bird sculpture that I still have sitting in my living room. Since then I haven't done anything like that but I'd love to do it again :/
Hi, it's me again, well after I finished all the jobs I had to do today I managed to throw a mug but I was too tired to cut it so I've wrapped it and I'll Finnish it tomorrow 🤞cheers Bob 🇬🇧
It's be interesting to try and make two slits, on the opposite sides of the mug so that it can be used both by right- and left-handed people :) (but I don't know if there'll be enough space inside then x)) )
Just curious and absolutely no experience, but could you just throw a larger diameter and cut it and overlap at the cut until it forms a new diameter on the inside? Your videos are very cool, thanks for sharing
Jon, you are hilarious!! I love you 🥰 Honestly you are inspiring and you make my day every time you put a new video. Thank you for sharing your passion with us. You taught me a lot, and I can wait for the news classes to start after Christmas time to make that hand warmer. I have been doing throwing clay for a year now and completely in LOVE with it ❤️ Look forward for your next video 😎😘
Man, I want to pursue a career in pottery so bad I don’t see how I would make it as a business. It’s so hard. I love your style and spunk, you remind people that pottery can be fun and doesn’t always have to be serious. I wish you offered apprenticeship 😂
Hi. I've watched your 2 warming mug videos and tried both I actually prefer no 1. For slipcasted cup piece. Because you can squeeze the slab at inside to form to your fingers. I tried no 2 but did not work out that well for slip pieces. Can you try your hand at slip casting and using porcelain clay for use of the finger entrance...... if not. I'm getting myself a turn table. 😄😄😄😄 thank you for your video . It was great! Loved the mall video too
"I bet you didn't even finish watching this video because you're so excited to try in on your own!" Had me WEAK. You earned my subscription 😂😂
Mine too😁
Very interesting, I have never seen a hand warming mug before.
Came for the cute dude but now I’m dropping out of my life to become a potter
Lol right
Liz X SAMMMEMEMEMME lmao
BIIIGGG MOOD
I was thinking the same thing lol
This comment made me giggle
You’re right- people do love them and they are a pain to make! As a lefty, I always make left handed pieces too. 👍🏻
Im a lefty tooo
Mom is ambi, granddad was ambi, I'm ambi, spouse is lefty..... Daughter is ambi. Love love love finding left-handed every day items. There used to be a place on Pier 39 in San Francisco called the "Left Handed Store", not sure if it's still there or changed hands? (Hehe forgive the pun)
Same, same.
Jon: "centering the clay helps to center you"
me: wow :') can't believe I'm about to drop out of my life to become a potter
Exactly the reason im starting
Customer: Hey can you do some handwarming mugs again ?
Jon: Nah do it yourself I'll show you
I’ve watched so many of your ASMR videos, too nervous to watch a normal one out of fear that you’d be a “too good for everyone” type of potter personality with that talent... this was the first time I heard you speak and I’m so glad you’re so chill and sweet and hilarious!!! I joined my first pottery class because of you! I start Thursday!
I see this is kinda old but have you thought of making it a double handed hand warming mug like the mug it's self would probably need to be larger but would that seem like a good idea for the cold season they would probably sell like theirs no tomorrow hell I'd probably buy a few
I think it would be difficult to get your hands out without spilling coffee.
@@____Ann____ Nah, you just take one out at a time.
Yay!!! You posted it! So I was impatient and made some in an hourglass shape and did them pretty much the same way and took them to my final bazaar two days ago and they all sold! I'll wait for you to put them on Etsy!
Your's is the only video, I've ever seen, for how to make these. I've seen the form, and even had students ask how they could make them, but all I had was how I'd do it. So thanks for posting.
Your glazes are just stunning. I can’t say how many times I’ve watched your videos especially this one. I gotta make myself a hand warming mug.
Am a crochet grandmom i to crochet and watch you I love art you are great blessing

Haha that's awesome!! I just started the channel in February 2018 with no video experience so I am learning lot's every day!! Welcome to the channel!
Newbie that made her first mug today! But I’m definitely going to try this. Love it, thanks for this and all your videos.
Just starting to create pottery....you, Sir, are an inspiration and a treat to watch!! Keep up the great work, Jon!

I am so happy to see this video. I searched a few months ago, but no one had instructions out there. They do look time consuming, but worth trying them out...but will have to be after the holidays! I really like these! I think it takes as much time to do handles as it does to cut that slid in it and insert that piece on the inside. Thanks!
Those mugs are beautiful. I've never seen a mug like them before.
Tell us how you really feel about those mugs!🤣
I have never desired one of those mugs, but I have seen how excited people are by them. Now I know why they're so expensive if you see them!
Love a UA-cam channel that entertains as well as educates 🌟
I love these videos it’s very relaxing! He’s like the Bob Ross of pottery
Definitely going to try this in my next ceramics class nest semester
Looks amazing...love the idea of wrapping your hand around the mug on a cold day❄...you've made it look easy🤨🤨🤨.
You are so funny!! I have made these and they are a pain in the butt! But people do love them. You make them different but I don't think it's any easier than my way. Thanks for sharing!
im grateful you even had consideration for lefties. thank you.
You Rock! John the Potter!! You are MAGNIFICENT!
It seems as it takes as much time to do handles also…I love these❤️❤️
Glad I'm not the only one who uses my fingers to apply slip. I'll have to try this. I think the time I spend making and attaching handles would be equivalent to attaching the slab, but we'll see.
Videos are so calming to watch
You’re hilarious, thanks so much for sharing.. unfortunately classes at the college ends on the 11th. So I’m going to do it come January. Also made the chip and dip bowls. It Might end up for a one serving size lmao thanks again.
Right the random half naked man outside in the snow screaming lol
Cool idea definitely will try. I want one. I realllllly want one. Beautiful!
I love my hand warming mug and everyone that sees me using it wants it, so I have to keep my eye on it every minute!
I love this. Been wanting to explore and learn pottery theoretically before I delved in but I'm loving. So keen to get in and start creating.
I watched this at 2x speed and it was so satisfying 😍😍
I’ve been waiting for this video. Yeah! I think I will try the method of pushing in the mug and adding to the outside. Maybe do the alteration while it’s still on the wheel in order to keep the round shape at the top and then add the patch on the outside after it has set up a little. Worth a try. I've thought about trying pottery out before. Really like this hand warming mug idea. My hands are usually cold year round. Hrmmmm. Thank you
They are the most beautiful mugs. I would buy one. ❤️
Hahaha I love how honest you are about these 🤣 Yeah, I'll give making this design a miss too.
This guy is so excited about everything and I love it! 😂 Makes everything so interesting
I'd love to see the end of the mug making to see how you paint/glaze it
Thank you so much! you explain things so well, and love your energy 😊i am a handbuilder, but want to move to wheel
I am so excited about trying to make these, so that's what I'll be doing today! Wish me luck! Cheers Bob 🇬🇧
Make a lefty version! ✋🏻
These are awesome! So making these.... along with the twenty other things I should be finishing for my ceramic degree!
Very cool! I've been waiting for this vid, I'm mainly handbuilding while I hone my wheel skills. So if you don't mind I'm going to take this brilliance, adjust it to suit and run with it! Thank you!
Wow I have learned so much. Though you make it sound simple, I will try this tonight, thanx Jon
That was cool to watch. I don't do pottery but one day i want to. It looks fun. Thanks for sharing.
I did this in college years ago! Very fun and I liked watching you so I just subscribed!

Came for the pottery, stayed for the sarcasm. 👍🏻
I would so but these! I want one and they would be awesome Christmas gifts. So unique! Wish I knew a potter!
Gorgeous!
And the cups are beautiful too.
Have to try to make one now. Lefty of course. Thanks for another great clip, John.
Thanks for the video. Have you ever thought of or tried placing the slab on the outside of the mug to make the sleeve instead of cutting the mug and pushing it outwards?
I do mine to outside all the time, think is easier. Barb
Yes! Part 2 coming soon:)
Super invention😍✌loved that handwarming mug ☕😍✌
I'm totally going to try a variation of this! Thank you so much
I enjoy watching you throw. As a tea drinker I wont be making this, as tea is so much hotter than coffee and my hand would burn! But I really like the idea. Thanks for showing us :-)
Elisabeth Bue Ooh! I wonder if he’s ever done a mug with a tea bag holder on it?
Pottery video pops up on my feed.
Super cute guy.
Didn’t even watch the first minute before subscribing 👌🏻
Lol but seriously so cool! Love pottery and clay, can’t wait to watch more videos!
its called hygge and it is the most raw feeling of being cozy. its a vary emotion driven word like happy sad hygge
H OOUG A LEE
Best idea, rarely use a handle so this would be perfect x
Is this a bad time to custom order 100 for Christmas????? Now all I need is 100,000.00
Hahah, if you had 100k I would make it happen!! But yes it is too late:)
Jonthepotter 😂 these comments are adorable - shoot for 100k i’d make it happen too & I’ve never thrown anything in my life. ha! I'm going to show my high school pottery class this video!
Unique piece. Congratualations!

I LOVED THIS SO MUCH
Now I absolutely have to change my life, give up my career and take up pottery just to make these mugs, because holy crap, I need this in my life.
And after watching the Part 2 video, I have also just purchased a few from you. Still completely changing my life for pottery though...
So you are out of luck if are left handed or do you make lefties too?
It's be interesting to try and make two slits, on the opposite sides of the mug so that it can be used both by right- and left-handed people :) (but I don't know if there'll be enough space inside then x)) )

I love this. Im sure that this will be something new in my country .. still a beginner. But thank you for this x
I love watching you , I learn a lot

I have one of these, and the design is very cool and interesting but the problem is, when you put coffee or tea in them YOU BURN YOUR HANDS
You make me giggle. Love your videos.
