@@dowe9382 yes need to be close to the chain called the neck of Nunchaku, but obviously should not hold very close to the chain , holding close to the chain is mostly done in freestyle Nunchaku. Also I have seen different styles of martial arts they hold at different parts of the baton . I believe it depends on the length of the chain or string. Thank you for your comment.
