    The stove body uses 3mm thick stainless steel (according to Gstove in Norway). The pipes are about half that maybe little less. The pipe getting red won’t hurt anything, just don’t keep anything near it that will combust easily is all. That is normal especially with smaller diameter pipes too. I’ve ran both my Gstoves with red (almost pink) pipes for a long time without any issues. It's okay stainless steel doesn't melt until approximately 1500 Celsius. It shouldn't warp either unless you dump cold water on it that hot. LOL
    If you really dampen the stove down tight for a long time be careful when you open the dampers up. It’s eat to open the top one first then the one on the front door. If you feed fresh air too quickly to a starved fire you raise the chances of having a sudden flare up in your firebox when the fresh oxygen hits it too quickly.
    Toasting Bread: A little trick I learned that worked for me for toast was to place a small wired grate on top of the cooking surface on top of the stove. Place your bread on that grate and it should brown nicely. Just make sure you use gloves to remove the grate afterwards. Lol

    Thanks for the review of the Gstove. I originally considered it when I bought my Kni-Co. One of the nice features of the Gstove is that it's constructed of stainless steel, so less issue with corrosion compared to many other stoves.
    Heating in cold conditions with an undersized stove can be a bit of a roller coaster ride.

    Same deal with the gstove. I tried it in a 5m bell at -35 and the most we could get it is 1 degree C in the tent. We switched to a 4m and supplement with propane heaters when needed. Also added the additional stand and linger legs. Higher camp cots also helped us to get us off the cold ground.

      Yeah it's definitely underpowered unless the tent is tiny...sigh. But yeah really wish we had got the leg extensions but it'll cost almost as much to ship them here as it would for the legs now

    Hey Jon this may help, I was taught to get a good bunch of coals going then pack the stove full of split wood ( even spruce or pine worked) get it rolling then close the stove damper and the pipe damper just shy of totally closed. This would keep the fire on a simmer so to say, give it a try. Take care, Happy Christmas to you both!

    This stove is a gem. It's a learning experience. Just try out a lot of shit... All kinds of loads and damper settings with all kinds of wood. Use the crate only for quick 'n hot firings with small wood pieces. For long burns, no crate and stuffed with round dry (hardwood) pieces. Experiment to find the best damper settings.

    I guess the question is, what is a realistic expectation from a little camping stove like that? If it is -30C outside and it 0C in the tent to me it sounds like it is worth it. Thanks for sharing you adventure.

    A good thing to add to the stove is a heat generated fan to push the hot air around. It helps with any stove, not just this one. Another nice piece to add is the water cannister that can nest on the back and boil water for you

    • @LostLakes

    Hi! Thanks for this great review! We are debating what stove to by for our 10x10 canvas tent to be used mostly in cold winters. Have you used the Gstove in -30 or colder yet in that tent? Can I ask what kind of stove you had before? if you were buying a stove now for that tent, which kind would you buy? Thanks!

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  3 роки тому

      Hey Nicole, we had the Great West Metal 12x12x24" stove before but it was junk. The Gstove was underpowered for our tent in the -20s or colder. Might do better with nice hardwood and an insulated tent, but if you're in a canvas tent in -30, I don't think it's the right stove. We since got the Kni-Co Alaskan which has been much better in the cold. I posted a follow-up video of our mistakes and learning curve with stoves if it helps:

    Looks like a great stove! How often did you need to feed the fire and do you need to clean out the ashes each time?

    • @LostLakes

      Too often lol. Ashes not too often though, maybe once per night. Although we still haven't stayed up to feed the stove all night. We haven't used it beyond -13C or so and in those temps we'd rather just snuggle up in our sleeping bags than wake up every 40 minutes to stoke the fire

    We have the esker 10x10 tent and find the kni co is perfect for that size. Either the Packer or Alaskan jr would do. Definitely weighs more than that stove I’m sure but worth it for adequate heat imo. Never had an issue with it just run the pipe straight up, no spark arrester. I know what you mean about the nesting pipes can get stuck you just gotta be careful you put them back the correct way and you won’t have a problem. I believe esker makes the same kind of stove too as the kni co. Saw it on Canadian outdoor equipment website. I think with that size of tent you’d benefit from a larger stove

    • @daveb427
      @daveb427 3 роки тому

      Yeah, the Esker stoves are made by Kni-Co. A nice feature of the new models is the steel log support holes on the legs. This was a feature Kni-Co originally did for the SnowTrekker stoves, and facilitates better (safer) log base for the stove in deep snow. I agree though, the nesting is sort of a pain.
      I have the Esker 10x10 as well, but I am using the full-sized Alaskan stove. It can pump out a generous amount of heat. I sorta wish I'd gone with the Alaskan Jr.

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  3 роки тому +1

      The KniCos look terrific. Thought about them but they seemed similar to our last stove (though much better quality) and we wanted to try something different. The G Stove has such rave reviews though. Not sure any of them used them in extreme cold, but even if it brings us to 0C when it's -30C outside, I can live with that :)

    • @daveb427
      @daveb427 3 роки тому

      @@LostLakes Yeah I am a little worried the KniCo might not stand the test of time corrosion-wise. I think it's time I pull it out and check things over before this season's trips.
      Winnerwell was the other brand I looked at that has S.S. stoves. I might have avoided it due cost difference once currency is converted, shipping, etc. They do have a very interesting collapsible titanium stove. It is small and probably not very efficient. I guess it would be for a different type of trip where weight and packability are more important.
      I wonder about the pointy legs on some of these stoves - whether they recommend putting some type of mat underneath to avoid sinking and "catastrophic pipe separation".
      Anyway, nice stove you have. :)

      I like to season my stainless steel cook wear just like my cast iron. Ive found it also helps keep the corrosion at bay. I know it sounds crazy but I even season my stainless steel kettle. I use it daily so it takes some abuse and I feel the oils help the metal keep almost cleaner if that makes sense. It's like the oil (I use Camp Chef's seasoning - doesn't go rancid) forms some sort of a anti stick polymer layer or something scientific as it heats/cools that protects it. I'm thinking of doing it to my G stove when it arrives during initial burn in. Ive seen stainless steel boat rails and hardware corrode to nothing growing up on the cost of the Atlantic Ocean so I'm not one of those "it's stainless it will last forever" guys.

      They are still in business but they seem to be having a hard time delivering the product. I ordered a Gstove (from gstove.com) in Nov 2019 and have still not received the order as of May 31, 2021. I inquired about the status in March 2021 and was told it would ship in two weeks. I again inquired about the status on May 28, 2021 and was told it would ship in two weeks. I strongly urge people to hold off on ordering from gstove until the clean up their delivery problems.

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  3 роки тому +1

      Yeah it's not great for it to burn too hot...there's a sweet spot.
      It's nowhere near the melting point of steel but I believe it can lead to warping and contribute to rust. However these pipes are stainless steel so it would take a lot to make them rust

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  3 роки тому

      Problem is you almost have to cut it live and season it for a long time. By the time it has seasoned in the bush, it's already rotting. And it's illegal to cut green trees on Crown land without a permit so that's not an option either :(

    • @LostLakes

      @@LostLakes I'm not an expert but I think it is because metal is a reflective surface therefore "light" based thermal readings suffer a little. Not sure how much.

      Not only that but they measure a wide area (the laser is misleading). So when you were measuring your pipe from two feet away, you were averaging it in with the wall on both sides.
