    Hamilton Beach 5 Tray Dehydrator
Erin's breakfast bars recipe: 1 cup oats, 1 cup shredded coconut, 1/3 cup chocolate chips, 1/2 cup peanut butter, 1/3 cup honey. Mix, spread in a pan, and let it harden. No baking needed.
I don't have dehydrator-specific recipes for my veggie chili, curry, burrito mixes. I just google it and pick ones that have ingredients that I like or that I want to use up. Dehydrating is a great way to save produce that's going to go bad.
    ******DEHYDRATOR & MEAL LIST******
    125 degrees
Canned beans - rinse first, 125 for 6-8 hours
    Mushrooms - 1/8" slices, 125 for 6-8 hours
Peppers - cut into 1/2" pieces, skin side down, 125 for 6-8 hours
Chili - see instructions for ground beef before preparing, refrigerate overnight to enhance flavour, 125 for 8-10 hours, combine one to one with water to rehydrate
Spinach - can double up in two layers, 125 for 4 hours, may start blowing around
    135 degrees
Cherry tomatoes - cut into quarters, 135 for 8-10 hours, ensure inside is dry
Onion - dice to 1/2" pieces, 145 for 2 hours, then 135 for 6-8 more hours, should be pliable
    Bananas - 1/8" slices, 135 for 8-12 hours, until chip-like or leathery
Pineapple - 1/8" slices, 135 for 12-18 hours, until pliable, smaller chunks dry faster, trays fit two pineapples
Pasta sauce - blend if chunky, avoid cheesy sauces, 135 for 6-8 hours
Blueberries - must break the skin first, 135 for 12-20 hours
Watermelon - thin slices, 135 for 18-24 hours
    145 degrees
Ground beef - extra lean (max 15% fat), add 1/2 cup bread crumbs for each lb of beef before pan frying and work it in with fingers, rinse with boiling water after pan frying, 145 for 6 hours, will be hard ("gravel")
Canned chicken - canned is pressure cooked, drain and rinse under hot water, break into small chunks, 145 for 8 hours
    MEALS
    Veggie burritos
    Wraps-sliced cheese, salami, mustard, mayo
    Chili and garlic bread
    Naan veggie calzones
    Fresh fish (tacos?)
    Cheese and crackers
    Veggie curry
    KD
    Dehydrated pineapple slices
    Ramen-egg drop or add veggies
    Pasta and dehydrated sauce
    Pesto
Erin's breakfast bars-oats, honey, PB, chocolate chips, shredded coconut
    Shredded cheese
    Instant potatoes
    PB and jam sandwiches

Also, outside of Canada and USA, eggs are often kept at room temperature so I think they are fairly safe to bring especially for the first few days. Thanks for doing this series Jon. Also, I use Kevin outdoors recipes and they are phenomenal! When I dehydrate, I dump all the trays out into a large flexible cutting matt. Then you can fold it in half and dump it into a bag or container or even weigh it if you are following Kevin’s recipes to a tee! 😂😉. Thanks for all you are doing! It is MUCH appreciated! I see someone already suggested canned pineapple for dehydrating. I started doing them when I was dehydrating apples and needed an acidic soak for the apples. I’d heard that pineapple juice worked well for this and was then left with a few cans of drained pineapple rings. I figured I’d chop them up and dry at the same time. I was surprised by how well they turned out. Chewy, sweet goodness is always welcome while chilling in a hammock in the back country. (This has reminded me I need to get going on my dehydrating stash of food!)

Another nice thing to bring for your fish is a little bit of lemon. Pan fry fish with lemon salt and pepper. We also use pancake mix to batter fish, it has eggs and everything already in the box. It also takes very little oil. The key is to batter the fish lightly.

Ham and bean soup dehydrates really well and re-hydrates back to deliciousness easily and has lots of what you need to keep going. You can also make it without the ham and use vegetable stock - I sent some to my niece who was walking the pacific trail. She liked it but it took too much of her stove fuel to re-hydrate - you would not have that problem since you are using the wood fire.

This was really interesting and those packaged meals from MEC or Sail are crazy expensive so I went the same route as you did and bought a dehydrator. I bought the most common one on Amazon and it's round and the trays and liners were easy to order. I also bought a food vacuum sealer a long time ago and use it now to package my meals and I can rehydrate right in them and it works great if you make a cozy. Funny thing, while I was watching you video I had 4 trays of fruit sheets I am making for a trip a the end of this month and of course you have to use the solid tray liner and it takes a long time. You had talked about air flow and I thought why am I still using the tray liner once it is solid enough and took it off as a solid sheet to finish on the grates so thanks. I do have a question for you. I have always gone the route of creating the whole meal like your veg curry and then dehydrating the whole thing, but I noticed you are doing things like pasta sauce and veg on it's own. Are you building the meal in the backcountry with the various separate dehydrated goods? The only thing I do like that is I dehydrate fruit on it's own to then mix with my instant oatmeal since it kicks it up a notch and makes it taste way better. Keep up the great videos and thanks for making them.

We've since got this one and it's way better. I don't like having the fan in the middle at the bottom where food falls into it. Although I saw a Ninja 10-in-1 unit recently that looks similar but does a ton of other things as well.

Hey Jon, I ventured back to this video because I've started prepping for my 30 day Algonquin trip and I was wondering if you have eveer tried dehydrating Peameal Bacon? If so, have you prepaired it like regular jerky (start raw) or cooked it first. I've found that most searches have been 50/50 on what is the better or safer way. I've never dehydrated pork before, just chicken and beef.

    • @LostLakes
      @LostLakes  3 роки тому +1

Thanks edelight! I'm far from scientific about it usually. Except on our 2-week Quetico trip last year, because we really had to. I carefully measured food into the containers and then portioned it for each meal with a measuring cup. Typically about 2c of dehydrated food per meal for me (less for Erin)

    • @LostLakes

It depends and ranges widely but a number of hours...usually 8 or more for a full dehydrator. Yep plenty of spices and stock while cooking, then dehydrate. You can generally add them after but I'd rather not have to bring separate spices

pemmican dude. you have way to much carbs. My guts would be in turmoil eating what you do. jerky and dehydrated meat . make broths out of it at camp. same with the pemmican. you need the fats in it to live. Like they say what works for one is not absolute for every one. I have gone carnivore and never felt better. I totally understand the chocolate bars. I'm convinced it's actually meat. LOL. I only bring one bar of dark chocolate. That's how my willpower works on chocolate. Coffee a must and tea as well. No sugars. Sounds boring I know but it works for me. I suck at fishing. But do catch the odd one or two. I enjoy your adventures. Live Life Large, it's shorter than you think.
