  • What happens when a multiracial woman raised in a loving family that valued advocacy, positivity, and education joins the Mormon church? Summur's fascinating journey takes you from her NFL player father desegregating a team, to her mother fiercely protecting her from bullies and racism. Despite nurturing experiences at home, Summur faced harsh judgments and segregationist attitudes at church - a stark contrast that began shaping her doubts. Her path winds through BYU, an African American Studies class that unveiled new perspectives, and a traumatic racist cop incident, before working as a flight attendant and meeting her husband.
With a unique multicultural lens, Summur shares the powerful family influences, eye-opening experiences, and pivotal moments like a young girl's innocent "Look mommy, a Lamanite" comment that led her to fundamentally question certain Mormon teachings and toxic cultures like purity culture. Prepare for an insightful, thought-provoking journey through the eyes of a Black Mormon woman.

This is the first time I have EVER heard anyone else in the situation of being disciplined for a sexual assault. I was excommunicated after a sexual assault that went further than hers. This, after being the most faithful Molly Mormon ever. I tried to stay in the church after and was treated like such a leper that I left and never went back. Bishop Roulette, I’ve learned since…but I’m not interested in a church who kicks you out in your greatest time of need instead of embracing and supporting you.

exactly. You don't need an organized religion to be able to be close to God. They may help one learn how to pray and the importance of it, but as soon as they start putting in other stipulations to be "closer to God" they're telling you that there are barriers.

What a excellent interview I can't wait to part two, as an African American and never Mormon I love it when I see you African Americans on this podcast, because I often wonder how do African Americans join a church with such a racist past, because we must remember that the 1978 overturning of the ban on blacks of the priesthood is not that long ago, Just for that reason is why I could never see myself joining the LDS Church, because you're telling me that God decided in 1979 to finally give blacks the priesthood the denying them for hundreds of years, That's ridiculous

I’m a Tallahassee Lassie, in the Poconos now for 20yrs. It IS considered part of the Panhandle, but mostly “The Big Bend” area, and, of course, the Capital. In 1973, my parents allowed me to try public school. Less than a month after starting at Leon High, me, all my new black friends and kids and families from Richard’s & Godby, held demonstrations outside Leon, protesting the attempt to change bussing-basically, take all my friends out of Leon and force them to go back to Richard’s. Longer story much shorter, I was extremely tiny for my age due to a genetic disorder. I also always had very light, very blond hair, that my mother kept in braids so she could…use them for discipline..or just when she felt like dragging me around because I did terrible things like read and wrote at college level..when she was always telling folks I was the R word. She also insisted I was deformed and handicapped…except my wonderful grandmother got me into gymnastics and dance. In other words, I “embarrassed” her, therefore I’m an evil person.
When I started at Leon, I made friends with my black classmates very easily because I really wasn’t accepted by the white kids. And my black friends LOVED putting neat braids in my hair.
During the protest, I was pretty much the only white face in the crowd. Unfortunately, it didn’t bode well for me at home. I was put back into private school, but had kept in touch with my black friends, got them to sign up for the volunteer work at the hospital, as well as dance and gymnastics-we stayed in touch, despite my family and our community at large.
Tallahassee had made a LOT of progress..until recently. As in other places I lived, recent years have seen a horrible rise in racial tensions..and outright racism. We seem to be turning the clock back…and personally, it terrifies me.

What a delightful interview and I can't wait to see the rest! The way John chuckles at ~1:59:55 after Summur talks about not experiencing the typical ensemble of guilt and shame when she was believing-but-"inactive"... felt like a moment I can relate to as a researcher. It's like "I've been working so hard for so long NOT to bias my experiments/analysis toward the hypothesis in my head, but now this observation that totally fits my hypothesis just appeared in front of my face anyway." We didn't want to be unfair to the Church by prematurely concluding that Church participation (going to Sunday meetings and hearing shamey talks) causes internal experiences of guilt and shame. Maybe we won't even conclude that now. But maybe we'll put more stock in that model. Summur, John, correct me if I've gone off the deep end!

I know John meant no harm by it, but we gotta be careful what we call daemons. The story she's telling is very much a cultural understanding of spiritual matters. I say this to you as someone who is a Hoodoo from the American South; these kind of stories are apart of a spiritual and cultural foundation and for some of us are just as real as the saints or Jesus, or God.

Whosoever will be saved, before all things it is necessary that he hold the catholic faith. Which faith unless every one do keep whole and undefiled, without doubt he shall perish everlastingly. And the catholic faith is this: that we worship one God in Trinity, and Trinity in Unity; neither confounding the Persons, nor dividing the Essence. For there is one Person of the Father; another of the Son; and another of the Holy Ghost. But the Godhead of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, is all one; the Glory equal, the Majesty coeternal. Such as the Father is; such is the Son; and such is the Holy Ghost. The Father uncreated; the Son uncreated; and the Holy Ghost uncreated. The Father infinite; the Son infinite; and the Holy Ghost infinite. The Father eternal; the Son eternal; and the Holy Ghost eternal. And yet they are not three eternals; but one eternal. As also there are not three uncreated; nor three infinites, but one uncreated; and one infinite. So likewise the Father is Almighty; the Son Almighty; and the Holy Ghost Almighty. And yet they are not three Almighties; but one Almighty. So the Father is God; the Son is God; and the Holy Ghost is God. And yet they are not three Gods; but one God. So likewise the Father is Lord; the Son Lord; and the Holy Ghost Lord. And yet not three Lords; but one Lord. For like as we are compelled by the Christian verity; to acknowledge every Person by himself to be God and Lord; So are we forbidden by the Catholic religion; to say, There are three Gods, or three Lords. The Father is made of none; neither created, nor begotten. The Son is of the Father alone; not made, nor created; but begotten. The Holy Ghost is of the Father and of the Son; neither made, nor created, nor begotten; but proceeding. So there is one Father, not three Fathers; one Son, not three Sons; one Holy Ghost, not three Holy Ghosts. And in this Trinity none is before, or after another; none is greater, or less than another. But the whole three Persons are coeternal, and coequal. So that in all things, as aforesaid; the Unity in Trinity, and the Trinity in Unity, is to be worshiped. He therefore that will be saved, let him thus think of the Trinity.
Furthermore, it is necessary to everlasting salvation; that he also believe faithfully the Incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ. For the right Faith is, that we believe and confess; that our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is God and Man; God, of the Substance [Essence] of the Father; begotten before the worlds; and Man, of the Substance [Essence] of his mother, born in the world. Perfect God; and perfect Man, of a reasonable soul and human flesh subsisting. Equal to the Father, as touching his Godhead; and inferior to the Father as touching his Manhood. Who although he is God and Man; yet he is not two, but one Christ. One; not by conversion of the Godhead into flesh; but by assumption of the Manhood into God. One altogether; not by confusion of Substance [Essence]; but by unity of Person. For as the reasonable soul and flesh is one man; so God and Man is one Christ; Who suffered for our salvation; descended into hell; rose again the third day from the dead. He ascended into heaven, he sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty, from whence he will come to judge the living and the dead. At whose coming all men will rise again with their bodies; And shall give account for their own works. And they that have done good shall go into life everlasting; and they that have done evil, into everlasting fire. This is the catholic faith; which except a man believe truly and firmly, he cannot be saved.

And why do some priests rape little boys? The Mormon church is an exaggeration of the Catholic church. All religions are cults. People are starting to realize this so go ahead and write an entire paragraph, nobody is listening because everyone knows what brainwashing cults look like. 🎉

No thanks. I don't worship any supernatural being who creates evil, and then blames others for his own bad behavior. If you create evil you ARE evil. Period.
