Minus-back used to be with the shape modes. Adobe got rid of it, people complained, and they brought it back. It ended up in the pathfinder row, probably because of the expand option. If you hold option when using the shape modes, the visual result is the same, but all the paths are kept intact, with an option to expand. Also, merge is unite for same-color groups, so that if you have several orange shapes and several blue shapes, merge will unite all the orange shapes and unite all the blue shapes, but keep them fit together perfectly.
