- Was owned by the parents of Irv Gordon, who bought this brand new. Irv the man who drove a Volvo P1800 a Guinness World Record of 3.3 million miles before his passing in 2018.

my father had the GL-10 version in this same color combination and model year. The coolest feature was the unexpected ELECTRO-PNEUMATIC SUSPENSION with HEIGHT CONTROL. The HEIGHT button to raise the car would be right bellow the cruise on button on the left of the instrument panel.
i had a 1988 just like that for the longest time only bright red. perfect car for me in highschool. 4wd, manual shit, low range. took that thing everywhere in new england. i took great care of it. to this day i remember redline was 6500 and in 2nd gear it was 55 mph and 3rd gear was 75. man i loved that car. have never seen one since i sold it in 1997. ive looked all over the internet and have never seen another one. id buy it

@@motoflyte Thanks. I saw that. She looks a little rough. That was the year just before the one-piece head light and fuel injection. Funny how there are lots of old cars but very few to no Subaru wagons left.

So fun to drive, cruise at 70 easy, spare tire located in engine compartment is brilliant. Tiny engine is powerful and moves! Easy to reach push button controls, perfect steering wheel.
Oh man I lived mine, did 200,000 miles in it till rust won the war..... that sound of a flat four horizontally opposed engine and the sound of little tinmen when the engine was cooling.
Had the noisiest windows ever and my air blower was stuck on either off or full. Loved that car. Thanks for the memories.
Incredible! We had almost this exact car in our family but beige. Mom bought it in ‘88 as a former demo. Sold it in ‘93....this was a trip down memory lane! So many quirks....like how it had power locks but no lock/unlock button. Just lock the driver’s door latch and all other door latches would follow 😂.

Lol. My mother also had this exact car in silver. I learned to drive in it and used it in highschool. Her and I would take it to Virginia from NE to see my sister. We'd go via I84 - I81 as she hated I95...that little flat-4 automatic would bog down pretty hard in the mountains... we'd have to turn the AC off or it wouldn't push 50. I remember those locks. This was an awesome trip down memory lane.
My dad had a 1985 brown wagon, and being USAF, that baby got us through Germany, Italy, California, and Texas before he sold it to a college kid. Almost 2 full decades of globe trotting.
I had a 1988 midnight blue ,this exact car. Loved those velour seats and the pull out cover in the back. Loved this car .
I've been looking for a red GL for a LONG time for a really good friend of mine that's a veteran. It was his first and only car before he joined the ARMY about 23 years ago. Would LOVE to get one and surprise him with it.

I have a 1989 GL 4x4 with 310,000 miles . Engine original . Indestructible .
We had the same color and model except it was a 5 speed. At the time we had a newspaper route and would be out before the plows got to our route. With 4WD low and that "California rake" suspension, snow up to the doors wouldn't stop the lil' bugger.
I miss those old Asian car door chimes. My aunts 3-door version of this car, my other aints Nissan Stanza, and my 96 Hyundai Accent had these bell sounding startup chimes.

Miss my 87 sedan. I especially loved dealing with the BMV and trying to explain that this car DID NOT have a model name. GL was the trim level. I still remember the befuddled lady trying to find it in her system and finally just picked an option code. She picked wrong. I know because I saw her screen and it said 3 cyl. So basically I paid excise taxes for the Justy the whole time I owned the car. LOL. Got off cheap.
Had the 1989 DL Sedan version of this.
The car was so slow that in order to hit a decent speed you were essentially maxing the engine, which lead to city mileage of only 25mpg, which is not bad for any car from the 1980s, but also highway mileage of only 25mpg because you were absolutely pushing the car to its limits on the highway. I remember driving up hills was like the little engine that could.

You could say that the GL wagon was the cocoon that morphed into the first forester wagon but instead of giving it colourful wings it came with a boxer engine with colourful performance... lol

Here is the reason the AMC eagle sales declined from the mid eighties onwards. The Subaru of the early eighties looked a bit like the AMC wagon in some ways it of course had four wheel drive like the AMC eagle range however the Subaru had coil suspension all round looking at the description of the AMC eagle it looked to be using leaf springs at the rear and no doubt AMC would have used such a set up until the end of production I believe that was 1987 if I'm correct. The Subaru company upgrades their cars 1986 onwards completely new styling leaving the AMC looking like a grand father's axe yes the AMC eagle had a bigger 4.2 litre inline six engine the Subaru had a 1.8 flat four cylinder engine yes the Subaru back in the early eighties would have been a little underpowered compared to the AMC eagle Subaru like most Japanese car manufacturers upgrade their range of vehicles so by the end of the eighties with the tight emissions regulations in the US Subaru would likely have introduced fuel injection leaving AMC way behind with better suspension providing a better ride and fuel injection improving fuel efficiency at the same time giving their vehicles a boost in power .I assume the demise of AMC would have had a number of factors to many out dated designs or the appearance of out of designs add to that not so great marketing the big three trying to take it over which happened when Chrysler bought out Renault's share in American motors in I believe around 1986 or 87.The thing is it ain't just Japanese car companies upgrading their products constantly so do Korean companies like Hyundai-kia and no doubt the Chinese car industry will do the same yes in the west we have changed but the end of AMC and other car companies like Saab is a reason we
in the west need to keep an eye on what the Asian car companies are doing and learn from our mistakes one reason big automotive companies can go under is greed and lack of innovation yes the Asian car industry hires a lot of German automotive engineers also in Asia governments interfere in the economy for the benefit of their own countries namely social stability and jobs either way they have moved ahead in the west we need to change course and starting now the collapse of AMC Saab and the old British Leyland should be lesson when governments and corporations get it wrong and over the last forty years governments and corporations have fucked up bigtime.

@@SmallRatDanny Yeah I bought the 91 automatic Loyale. It was my temporary ride until I bought my Leaf, but I am still planning on dropping a used Leaf motor and batteries into it as well. It's a nice little car, and it's got so much space in the back. I want to keep it and convert it to full battery electric. (just like all my cars).
