What a treat. A 25 mins video. Must go and do my housework before settling down to this beauty.

The US model had some decent white steel 8-spoke wheels on the 4WDs (there was also a rare optional alloy version I think was a dealer option). Those wheels came on FWDs in the US. For the CV joint boots, if you know they just split (or just look about to) and didn't yet throw all the grease out and ingest sand and dirt, get split boots (or split some) and put them over the old ones like a shell, then secure between the pleats with black zip ties. Yeah, it sounds hackey and it is, but these aren't concours lawn ornaments and I had them last tens of thousands of unbabied miles like that (never saw them fail, they outlasted the remainder of the car's life). Worst case, they go again and you replace the axle, but that's where you were originally and now you're a lot longer down the road than you would have been.

You might have to go more advanced on your timing, towards 12. Disconnect the vacuum advance from the dizzy & plug it while you do the timing. Set the idle then do the mix. You'll know when its right. You'll be impressed.

Great job, just found one just like it. Did it have the digital dash?

Yes those drive shafts are a pain to reinstall.. took me one day per set to get it done with my home tools.. But doing timing and is a lot easier on my Subaru since it's fuel injection turbo. Timing mark is on the crank pulley

Bloody hell. I remember how hard those ball joints were to get off.
I gave up on the CV’s as a grommet. Just took it to someone.

We had contemplated that mate but it was Xmas time and I could not be bothered rooting around trying to get it to someone. Anyway. Done now.

Did you have the vacuum advance disconnected when checking timing? and is the vac advance working for that matter ? (usually pretty stuffed by that age) , also the engine ticking .. that model may have solid lifters to adjust. Not a hard job despite the position of everything.

Oh crap Jimmy I completely forgot to do that! I should have known because it was the same with my 84 Hilux! And yes the vacuum advance is probs rooted at this age. Thanks mate I need to sort that out now. Might drive even better! Sweet!

Mate just timed the old girl again. Disconnected the Vacuum advance and no change. I think that tells me it's not working. Correct?

@@FLIPMYRIDE yeah should be about 10deg more advance at idle and light throttle with the vacuum connected . mine doesn't work either. There is a mob that reco them with an exchange program on ebay . I've been meaning to get mine done. but for now I just run it on 98 and my timing a bit more advanced than normal to compensate
