I went to high school with a guy whose parents had a ski lodge in New Hampshire. They bought him one of these back in the early 80's as his daily driver. It identified him and created an identity for him that he retains to this day - simple, reliable, quirky. Here's to you, Jeff Hyland! I will always remember you and your Subaru GL hatchback.
I had the 1983 Subaru GL Wagon in my early 20's, it took everything I threw at it with ease and never had any mechanical troubles, I ended up giving it to my uncle who still drives it to this day and it's still going strong with out skipping a beat to this day, miss the car so much and want another one.
What a great story. Whoever produced and edited it did a masterful job. Ashley is a real trooper (Stephen you are one lucky dude to be married to her). To allow Stephen follow his, somewhat quirky, dream of getting the car back speaks volumes about the type of person she is. Also, isn't it a pre-requisite to own at least 1 Subaru before you are allowed to move to Oregon? Keep up the good work Hagerty.
Not that anybody asked but the two Irish number plates in the background belong to the following cars; 02-LM-984 is a 2002 Ford Fiesta 05-CE-3621 is a 2005 Ford Mondeo
I have this exact car, including the tricylops light. I love it and it runs great! Mines the 1982, silver hatchback. It gets so many positive reviews. I'm the third owner the two previous owners were mechanics. But mines all stock. Slow, steady and reliable.
This video made me cry alot. I remember my younger self when I didn't have any noteworthy responsibilities and my old car though old really made me happy. Sold it sadly but will get it back
Oh man!!! I can relate so much to this. I had an 88 Subaru Chaser in high school (the two door, fwd GL in Canada) and LOVED that car and you just can't find them now, or the wagons either. People find it so strange when I say my dream car is an 80's Subaru.
My dad gave me a 1980 GL 4 door wagon in 1996. I drove that thing across the US and back, and in all kinds of heavy snow. The only thing that ever broke on it was the Accelerator cable which cost about $15 to replace. It got taken by the Washington, DC parking enforcement because I racked up a thousand dollars in tickets, and I never got it back. I miss that car.
My best friend growing up was a Subaru fan in the late 70's when these cars were outside of the mainstream. I was instantly hooked on these oddly bizarre yet cheeky cars - he owned an 1981 hatchback AWD (cyclops headlight and all) and I bought (my first car that I picked out, bought and paid for) a buckskin tan/yellow 1981 GL10 AWD wagon (cyclops headlight, white steel rally wheels, roof rack, mud flaps), fully optioned. I think it had maybe 67 hp and a four speed stick so it would max out at maybe 80 mph, going downhill with a tailwind, whining like an electric drill. Got like 38 mpg. And I absolutely loved that car. Adored it. Not very exciting on paved roads but it was a beast on dirt/gravel/sand/mud/snow. A little mountain goat. I used to get the biggest kick out of watching the little cyclops center headlight appear under its powered cover. And driving it offroad (sometimes foolishly) where few other vehicles could go. LOVED THAT CAR!
I had the white version of this car my freshman year of college. The body gave out before the car. It was a freaking tank in the snow. This video brought back so many memories especially since my shifter was just as sloppy.
Just goes to show you, it's not necessarily the speed, or the looks, or how "cool" it seems. If it's fun and you love it and love to drive it, that's really all that matters in the end. Keep on Driving! That's a great (love) story!
Exactly!!! Sometimes it doesn't matter if you have the fastest or best looking car out, sometimes the only things that matter are the memories made from point A to point B...
First car 1977 VW polo. Lime green with orange interior. In military, stationed in Germany early 1980’s. 40bhp. Drove that car all over Europe. Loved that car.
I feel the same way about that series of Subarus! My first one was a 1980 GLF-5 Hardtop in Carmine Red. My favourite was my 1984 GL-10 in Misty Grey. The 4x4 wagons are a blast also! 30+ years of driving those cars have been the best! I have the big blue shop manual for each of them. Don’t lose it! Hold on to that car forever! You will never regret it!
I had an '82. The thing was unbeatable on snowy mountain roads and desert dirt roads. I always thought it would blow people's minds to fix one up and bring it to a car show. I guess my instincts weren't that far off.
I was born in the 90's but i love 80's V.A.G products, and i actually own a 91 VW Passat, and i feel when i was 19 when i actualy bought it. It is a great car and i really love it
This was one of my first cars, I dont think theres very many people that can understand how capable these cars are, I'd say one of the morst capable cars in the world. I restore muscle cars for a living now, 30k-50k dollar jobs, I am considering restoring the subaru. May e one day, until then its sitting in the barn.
'The Terminator' is my favourite movie, and the Subaru DL is the car in which Kyle Reese and Sarah Connor escape the terminator from the police station.
I had a 83 subaru gl for my first car in 1999 in nor-cal and I used to 4x4 it!! Me and and my buddies wold go to places that only jeeps and samurai can go and i was in a hatchback on 29" tiers
Our family has Owned ..... 84/86 GL wagons.... 95/98/08 impreza's. The 2.5 EJ head gasket issue that did it for 3 generations of ownership. Now we own Honda's. Congratulations Subaru you saved $2200! Yet lost 4 new sales and counting.
I get it. I owned both an automatic shift to 4 wheel drive on the fly GL Wagon and a high and low gear manual tranny 2 or 4 wheel drive GL Coupe. They where both so much fun.
2stroketurbo works on a lot of small displacement cars and is located in Oregon,if you want to see some odd rare micro cars then head over to his channel.
What a great little car. I never saw a 2 door like that before. That is some sweet noise coming out the exhaust and watching this has convinced me to slightly alter my stock exhaust on my 06 RS Impreza.
Listen, whatever rocks your boat, if u see the icon, I have a 73 Grand Prix, because I couldn’t find my first car, a 73 Luxury Lemans that was 5 yrs old when I got it, now I’m not being a ass here, I have a 18 Mercedes AMG in my garage, I’m almost 60, and I’ve had all expensive cars, starting w Lincoln and Lexus, etc, but nothing has ever been able to take that Pontiacs place, it has every option in the book, it was black w white interior white top, spoke wheels,1.5 inch whitewalls, guess what, my replacement vehicle is the exact colors etc, rite down to the wheels, I’d give anything to have my car back, but I can’t find one, you found yours God Bless

Subaru - the official brand of Oregon :-D
if you love something let it go, if it finds its way back to you it was meant to be
true love
I prefer to look at it this way- If you love something set it free. If it doesn't come back, hunt it down and kill it.
Subaru sucks
Chris Whitesell how dare you
Well that’s a bunch of garbage.
Love this! Did not know about the center light...very cool.
CarSmarts Radio TV it’s supposed to be a “passing”‘ light, was a rare option on GL and Brat
Me too
Not that anybody asked but the two Irish number plates in the background belong to the following cars;

05-CE-3621 is a 2005 Ford Mondeo
1st thing I spotted, wonder what the story is behind them.
Fiesta NCT (roadworthiness inspection) expired since July 2013, Mondeo expired May 2013.

I had the same year GL Wagon when I was in college. I had so much fun with it. It took everything I threw at it and kept coming back for more.
This video made me cry alot. I remember my younger self when I didn't have any noteworthy responsibilities and my old car though old really made me happy. Sold it sadly but will get it back
I had an '81 GL Wagen, best car in the world! Never had any trouble with it. And that center light...wow

I have a GL in ute form. Just an absolute treasure of a car.

Awesome video. My first car was an 82 Subaru GL. I bought it in 1995 for $1200. You never forget your first!
Subaru def has impacted many lives.... Long live Subie!
I get it. I have a rusty old S-10 Blazer, not fast, but so fun to drive. It sounds good to me and it has been reliable for 16 years now.
My 2nd Subaru was a 82 GL Hatch w/4wd. Previously owned by a Boeing engineer, so it was well taken care of
I had an '82. The thing was unbeatable on snowy mountain roads and desert dirt roads. I always thought it would blow people's minds to fix one up and bring it to a car show. I guess my instincts weren't that far off.
They may be slow but the 4wd is what allowed them to excel in the early 80s safari rallies. Even took first place in their class a couple times
Man what's not to love about this? True car guy.
My dad had a GL. Holy Crap......it went everywhere.......it was awesome.....
I'm glad you guys are having fun.
The first car I learnt driving. 🙂
We still have one at the house..
I really liked the intros vibe!

I think everyone has a car they loved and always wish they never gave it up. For me it was my Murkur XR4Ti
'The Terminator' is my favourite movie, and the Subaru DL is the car in which Kyle Reese and Sarah Connor escape the terminator from the police station.
Woow, thanks for sharing that! I need to watch that scene now.
I had a 83 subaru gl for my first car in 1999 in nor-cal and I used to 4x4 it!! Me and and my buddies wold go to places that only jeeps and samurai can go and i was in a hatchback on 29" tiers

One of the best cars ever made. Only rust problems...
Is this the Cannonball Run Subaru?
I love this story so much!
Great story, the 80's theme the music tracks down to the font used to present the people talking , good job.
this man cares about his subaru (surprised it isnt on bags and bbs with some wing off amazon)
I get it. I owned both an automatic shift to 4 wheel drive on the fly GL Wagon and a high and low gear manual tranny 2 or 4 wheel drive GL Coupe. They where both so much fun.
That was a cool story! My first car was a 1981 Subaru DL.
I bought one for $500 from a friend and it was awesome, went anywhere (4WD) and was hard to keep the bailing wire on it :)
After getting a yugo I find I’ve fallen in love with weird 80s hatchbacks

Love the car. My family had one... that center pop-up was so unique
I drove one of those from Anchorage Alaska to Baja Mexico where I gave it away and it probably still lives.
Glad you have it....
