I think Laura would have won regardless today, killer performance all the way through. The only benefactor was probably Chelsea, she made the podium without Lucy and Anne presence. Can we talk about the ridiculousness of IM though on behalf of Anne Haug? How does that happen 200m into the course? Don’t we check for debris? And have a crew to assist? “ too congested” is a poor excuse for a WC event. Also their broadcast crew needs a complete overhaul, such poor commentating and inability to know anything about the competitors. How is it impossible for them to not know where people are beyond the first 3 spots??? Awful.
I honestly don’t think Lucy could’ve held off Laura as Laura is a much better Runner. I have my doubts that Haug could’ve beat them either. Laura would’ve been way up off the bike and Anne, isn’t running 235. Deserved winner.
Totally agree. Laura gave a wonderful stand-out performance that would have beaten anyone on the day. Running that fast off a bike that put minutes into Kat says it all. Take a bow, Laura and enjoy your time as IM World Champion 👌
Let's not take anything away by throwing the ? of Lucy and Anne not being there, I want to know why Anne couldn't get mechanical by T1? My fantasy picks were almost there, great showing by those who showed up
Nice is a great venue and has a long history with LC triathlon but honestly just can't get excited for this IMWC like I do for Kona with it's history and traditions. I plan my calendar around Kona weekend every year, but sadly forgot the Nice WC was on (this past weekend) and am actually surprised by my indifference. That's on me though and acknowledge the affinity for Kona is likely based on my connection to the sport here in NA and it's deep roots with the "Hawaii Ironman". I also don't wish to take anything away from this Nice race and what was surely a great event with great performances. Maybe (hopefully) over time the new venue & date will grow on me.
When I heard they were moving off Kona every other year I was super disappointed. But over time the Nice race has grown on me. For starters the Nice course is much more scenic and interesting than Kona. The swim won't have jellyfish or sharks, the bike being one single, scenic loop is awesome, and yeah 4 laps on the run is a bit much but it's on the beach with all the crowds. Not to mention the heat and misery of Kona. Lastly, the fact that the Kona locals make such a fuss about it all makes me not as enthusiastic about spending money there. TBF I have never done either course but other than tradition and history and the cool Kona name drop, Nice looks a bit better to me, on paper anyway. In my fantasy world though, the Kona course would moved back to Oahu and do the Waikiki swim, around Oahu bike race and then the Honolulu Marathon. A boy can dream.
‘28mm Schwalbe prototype tires that weigh a scant 180 grams equipped with Schwalbe Aerothan TPU tubes’ - poor decision by the team as gains on a prototype tire on that course not going to bring reward for the risk
I think this was Anne Haug’s for the taking. She came out of the swim just in front of Laura Philip, and after her Roth performance I’m sure she would have been able to be in that group with Laura and Kat, or at least not that far back, especially with her being so much lighter for the climbs, and so she definitely would have got them all on the run. I think Lucy would have been out by herself on the swim and bike, but Laura would have caught her on the run, so if Haug had also been in the race, I’m sure it would have been 1. Haug, 2. Philip, 3. LCB
It seems, that there weren't massive influences on the results by penalties. Is that only due to the hills in Nice ? So it wasn't just the wetsuits that had a massive influence on the results. In Kona a lead in T2 with that gap would have been less likely?
@@thedailytri Throwing in a spare tube is one thing but a cut tire is fatal unless you have one folded up in your kit too. Could someone explain how the cut occurred? Debris (glass?), barricade footing? what?
"Super cool!!" for Laura to win the big one...psyched for her and love her YT channel even with the subtitles, lol! Kat hung tough, happy for her podium too! Still bummed about Lucy and Anne, though. Yes, curious to know how the race would have looked with them in. Appreciate your recaps, Travis! God bless, Megan
Super wrap up thank you. I also think Laura would have won that regardless of Anne or Lucy. Her bike/run combo was incredible on such a tough course. Such an emotional win and so well deserved after such a focussed effort. I had tears in my eyes for her 😅
Without the dnf and dns, The podium would have been:LCB, Haug, Phillip. Lucy would have made a gap in the swim to Haug, then made more time in the bike. She probably would have an 18-minute gap to Haug going into the run. Their finish would only be by 1:30 minutes at most. Sodaro definitely benefited the most, with some suspicious circumstances like her awful T100 series, poor 70.3's, and switching bikes, sparks curiosity. Happy for Phillip she totally deserves it, she was the obvious choice for making the next stride for the top step. Let's go champ. LCB vs LP in Kona next year will be awesome.
No one was beating Laura either way, haug would have been at least 10 min back off the bike and with Laura’s run she would have never caught her. . I do think if they would have swapped her wheel out she could have podiumed still.
LCB would have never win : 9h03 in june and Laura made 8h45 with same run and cycle trips. Completly an other World. LCB is doing too much vidéo sponsorship, marketing since her award last year. I do not think she was ready for such a compétition. Already Abandon at T100 London and now second one. Clearly she is not ready.
Being a mother and a professional athlete is seriously impressive. The way your body changes, your hormones, your life. Your time is now scheduled significantly different than before, and you need a top notch support system to do what she does. I think it needs to be talked about - but also celebrated. There's no need to harp negatively on her mentioning something that's a huge part of her life. Just ignore it and move on if you're that bothered. I think she's awesome.
I can’t get over what happened to Anne. It ruined it for me. Without the two biggest contenders for the podium, this has a total bitter aftertaste. What happened to Anne couldn’t have been prevented either. Happy for Laura but I can’t consider someone being “the best” or the champion if the two best triathletes at the distance weren’t competing.
Part of racing is avoiding injury and on the start line when the gun goes off. If you aren't fit and ready, then it's just not your year. Sorry but that's just racing. As for Anne Haug, that was disappointing. But again it's just racing. Some days aren't meant to be and there was no guarantee of a podium anyway. She's had plenty of time on the pro circuit. It's not her first or last DNF.
You’re commenting this everywhere. No one cares what ruined the race for you. Anne was completely poised and took it like a true competitor. And we all know who wasn’t there but that doesn’t diminish Laura’s spectacular performance in any way.

Great battle! I was hoping that Kat will win but happy for Laura too!
Great wrap up! 👍
Thank you! 😁
I love these recaps! Thanks so much Travis! You're my favorite commentator!!
So happy Laura won! 🎉

Ironman really messed up when they moved this from Kona and made it separate from the men’s.

I thought this was a travesty too. Just waiting in T1 without no help for like 20 minutes was so sad to watch.

LP earned this win! Congrats
Congratulations Laura!!
What happened to Barclay?
Sadly, pulled out injured the day before. Strained muscle
@@thedailytri grazie. you run on that, you risk really hurting yourslef badly
It doesn’t seem the same not in Kona. Lacks mystique
What tires was Anne Haug running?
Ones she’ll likely never use again.

While watching the race it wasn't really noted how fast this marathon was...I don't think either Anne or Lucy would have cought Laura.

Veggie as well 😍
Anne Haug should have carried a spare tube instead of relying on mechanics. It takes 2-3 minutes to change a flat tire.
She actually had one!

It‘s not correct, that Kat never beat Anne on a full distance. Kat got second in Saint George WC behind Daniela and in front of Anne. 👍
Thank you so much for catching that! I don’t know how I missed that
