Amazing video DailyTri. Loved it. I know a lot of people weren't fans of Nice , what do you think if IM chose the original course in Oahu and the 2nd location?
Thank you! That would be so interesting, but sadly couldnt see that happening. I think it is still too inconvenient to split the men and women even if it is just a short island flight. I think they should just go back to one day of racing in Kona and then two days in Nice...
WOW! What an amazing video detailing the history of Ironman. You did an awesome job presenting it, as usual! This was so informative - thanks Travis! I love your channel!
I love this sport. It has given me so much to strive for and has made me a better person because of all the challenges one must over come to cross the finish line.
So the story goes: Bruce Dern was making a documentary of sorts in 1982, the year of Julie Moss. After the sun had set ABC Wide World of Sports, Dern's film crew, and Valerie Silk were having it out in the restaurant that, at that time, overlooked the finish. ABC was demanding that Dern's crew not be able to broadcast as ABC had the rights and ABC went so far as to say they would not broadcast IF the Dean documentary was allowed. Silk knew that without ABC there would be no next year. All the while the Dern crew was pointing to the contract that they had with Silk. There was no resolution in sight. Until.... The crowd below exploded with cheering. Looking down they witnessed Julie as she crawled to and collapsed at the finish. ABC realized what they had, forgot about the Dern documentary, and the rest is history.
One of the people inspired by Julie Moss to do Ironman was none other than Mark Allen. When Sebi crossed the finish line in fist place in 2014, he exclaimed, " Can you f*^&ing believe it!" The year Crowie rode the Specialized Shiv to victory he commented to his Kona massage therapist, who was out on the course on a motorcycle, how easy the Shiv made the ride. In 1996, when called to give his victory speech, Luke van Lierde gave the podium to fifth place Dave Scott, who ran a 2:45, second fastest run of the day. To this day, Scott Tinley still laments the 33 second loss to Dave Scott. In 1995, Sister Madonna Bruder was blown off of her bike by the winds gusting to 60mph!
Kona is the only World Championship 😐 I actually wonder what the statistics are on WC slots for Age groupers when it's a Kona slot vs Nice? Seems to roll down a lot further for Nice imo.
Totally agree. You mentioned US dominance, but you failed to mention that the Canadiens won in some of those years and what about the Swiss miss Natascha Badman who was a multiple winner
Would be interesting to have an Ironman using only 1980s bicycles and running shoes, to see how the finishing times are affected! And everyone must eat a bowl of chili during the bike
...and It's almost showtime for another one! 🔥🔥 Let me know some of your favorite moments from Kona! ⬇⬇
Yes! I have a super small cameo in this video!!! 🙌 Love this channel and the work your doing to uplift our small sport!!!
Wow, what a well done video. Please do more like this. Your best video yet.
Moving away from Kona is a disgrace. It's not the real world championships if it isn't in Kona. What the fuck were they thinking?
100% agree, and I like Roth the best.
probably saving costs and getting more money and value.
Basically women equality fucking it up.
Great video!! Brought me lots of memories having been in tri since early 90s
The greatest sport in the entire world!!! It has made so many lives meaningful! Thank you, Travis!!!!!!!!
I completely agree, it's truly a special sport!
Good video and history wrap-up, just one minor left-out, you forgot to mention Gustav Iden and the men`s Kona record...

I really appreciate the kind words!
Great video mate. Kona really is triathlon for many people, this was a fantastic history of the race 👍
Thanks mate! Absolutely, it's what inspired me. I've always wanted to put together a video like this and decided it was the best time to do so!
@@thedailytri bring on the race - it’s going to be epic!
Great job on this!
I love this sport. It has given me so much to strive for and has made me a better person because of all the challenges one must over come to cross the finish line.
I love this!! So true
thanks, mate, great overview that I never knew
You're welcome! So much to cover!
Great history education about Kona. Thanks
Great job!
Thank you! I hope you enjoyed it.
Fantastic video. I’m sure that took a fair bit of work to pull together.
Yeah a good few days haha. It's mainly the research and fact-checking that's time-consuming. There were so many sites with conflicting stories!
is IronWar 2 missing (Macca vs Raelert) ? :)

👍👍👍
That's incredible!! Thanks for sharing!
Perfect time to open the app
What about the Canadians? Peter Reid 3x winner, Lori Bowden 2x, Heather Fuhr and the Puntous twins in the early days.
14:25
Tell us more about them! I was just trying to cover as much as I could in a reasonable time. Would love to hear some stories!

These are incredible insights, what's your background?
@@thedailytri Hey Tavis! This year will be my 30th time racing in Kona, beginning in 1990. Will you be in Kona this year?
That is incredible! Yes, I will be - hope to see you there!
Kona is the only World Championship 😐

Peter Reid and Lori Bowden would like a word…
So many more I would love to include! Feel free to discuss them more!...

Love this idea haha!
2022.split day man & woman.all in kona.was the best
Love how it didn't bother him to alter his session to run with pram and include his wife!!
You missed Peter Reid’s win and Lori Bowden
I did! And quite a few others too.
I hope some day they go back to Kona 100%. Nice is nice but it's not Kona/
Nice is also very difficult bike. You got to be light there.
2019 TO 2nd place and first American sub 8hrs.
Oh yea, I absolutely loved that. And in 2022 after the heart attack!!
Splitting the event was the worse idea ever. Kona is the only world champs in my eyes
IM WATCHING YOU KONA!!!
Wow!! Loved the intro. And what an incredible history lesson! Did not know much of it 😮
Glad you liked it! Decided to mix it up a bit. Got another good one in the next video ;)
I learned so much too while doing it! Fascinating!
