I would be really cool if you could place streetlights that turned on when it went dark to add ambience/ make it easier to see the enemies
Yeah, we are trying our very best to keep the game light on performance to make sure it can run on most machines. Lots of lights are a bit tricky to make work from a performance perspective, but I think we managed to find a good solution to add some more lighting and mood to the night, which you'll probably see in the next devlog. :)
Say did you mean it, because how does this have anything to do with you and how does this make you cool 😎. Commented at 11:49 5:16am
hello Jonas Troller the head dev and the UA-camr of this channel and of this video.@@JonasTyroller commented at 11:49 5:20am
@@JonasTyroller perhaps a overlayed texture with an additive shader?
@@JonasTyroller You can add like a watchtower or something that attacks the enemy automatically. Maybe, some special abilities.
That's some really epic progress! Well done! The graphics fit the theme really well!
Thank you. Happy you think so as well. :)
And you know how we found the cure for cancer?
*JONAS'S PATH FINDING SYSTEM!*
6:35 from past experience, taking away a lot of options usually is the best path, as people get decision paralysis. I remember building a reporting engine that could drill-down on > 10 metrics on multiple levels. People got intimidated. So, we removed all the expert options, presented 3 simple buttons that used the underlying system, and people loved it. I'd stick with the characters and maybe have a final 'build your own character' where you can use your own image and pick the traits like you decide now, but probably, just sticking with the characters will works best for people.
That's a vary valid argument. I agree to the decision paralysis problem. We're trying to solve that by making the player unlock new options piece by piece. You start out with only 2 options and unlock more as you go. So far playtesters seem to respond very well to that. We'll see how it goes. :)
While it is valid concern, I doubt your software analogy with immediate multiple options applies to good games with perk systems.
The perk system is a very old tried and true mechanic used in many many genres, and very rarely people are complaining about there being too much choice. Usually they are not all available from the start and are getting unlocked gradually, so players have time to think them through.
The most recent example I can give is The Last Spell, which have a crazy amount of meta-progression and 70+ run-general perks, called omens. You unlock them one by one in the order you choose, and you evaluate their effects, also, one by one, without being stressed out. Unlock one thing > decide if its useful to you > move on. You can only equip a few each run, and sometimes even 70 options is too little to get what you'd like.
And this meta-progress perk system doesn't even cover in-game character perks, where for each character you control (up to 6) you have to gradually select 10 character perks out of 40 available to them (and those 40 are semi-randomly pulled from a pool of 80+), and you have to select what stats to level up for each character.
Some nerds do like to adjust every little thing in their game, literally playing settings and build-crafting half the time in the game. Those people are also a valid, and big, group of players, who like depth and options, and space to think and figure out.
@@JonasTyroller The character system could also change the way perks are balanced. Perk combinations that are too strong could be impossible or the really powerful perks could be exclusive to each character playstyle.
@@JonasTyrollerThat’s probably a good solution, I think Risk of Rain 2 does something similar.
The Outer Wilds for the background!! Absolutely warmed my heart to see that, and I am loving this devlog series.
If you're an indie game dev professionally, great indie games aren't just must-plays; they're ripe for analysis and learning. And you can probably appreciate the work that went into their design and technical aspects more than the average player.
I am also doing a project that is extremely similar to what you guys are doing here. I just found your game doing that "research" you were talking on dev vlog 2.
You are such an inspiration. It does look like the game is doing great. I hope you get even more success in the future. You totally deserve it!
Hello.
I'm a game developer hoping if you might need a hand. If yes, can we discuss on discord?
I love this devlog series. Can't wait to play this gem of a game. And that spline tool is so versatile! Great work!
I always watched people play this as a gamer, started coding myself and came accross you from noahs video, and your the creator of this game... AMAZING and i am flabbergasted
I love that you show how much SWEAT and TEARS gamedev really is in a way that it also shows how rewarding it can be ❤
Love these dev logs that are day by day.
Is there any chance of you making that pathing asset available for everyone at some point? It seems super useful
Developing it to a point where it could be considered a proper "asset" would probably a bit too tedious (writing documentation, improving usability, etc.). Maybe a good middlground could be to just upload it as is to GitHub or so.
@@JonasTyroller that would be cool
@@JonasTyroller Please do! I also think this would be a useful tool. 😁
@@JonasTyroller would love to see it!
This devlog felt like a minute, it was so good to watch! The Like is a must just for the realistic dev experience ahah, I wish i could double like for the rest of it!. Keep it up, the game looks ton of fun!
we are Working on our game Peace is Your Destiny a wonderful game for anyone dealing with stress or anxiety. In today's fast-paced world, it's easy to get overwhelmed and feel helpless. This game could provide a much-needed escape and an opportunity to unwind.
*0:58** 1 stack of days. Nice.* 😄
1:19 i like how everyone started using the old minecraft hurt sfx
Please make the path tool a player tool. My eyes lit up at the possibility of placing buildings where I want, and drawing a little dirt path between them. Incredible.
Looking great!
What I see is a multifarious skills applying a modicum of indie game dev. explained in a propensity that makes the game and your speech...sublime!!

oh man this could be the new vampire survivors, please do it well and inspire the gaming world! I need more tower defense games lmao
please add a multiplayer. I would like to play it with my friends. That would mean, that even more players wourld buy and play the game including me. Also do not forget, that even more streamers/ youtubers could promote the game if they play together!
Awesome work as always man!
i just got will you snail for my birthday and MANNNNN is it sooo good
also sick new game very excited
What an awesome progress. The game feels like it's getting better and better with every second - unlike my games. It takes me ages to get something to work. Anyway great job and hopefully your game will be a success again.

Looks fantastic! Loved seeing all the progress made! :D
Something that might be cool, is perhaps a scout unit which you send in the day, and it returns at night or the next day, telling you how many enemies are coming/where from/what types?

Honestly, these devlogs are my favourite things to look forward to. Amazing progress as always!
"I'm a nerd, so I wanted to have an analytics screen after the game and that means I made one!" Love it lol! You're making me want to get back to making my game now...

Game Development is a constant for loop of: 1.come up with cool game ideas, 2.code, 3 design, 4 test and repeat. I do like this format though of doing game devlog
Just wanted to say that I really enjoyed some of the slower, quieter moments (I think day 70 was one of those moments) mixed in with the narration and visuals. I can sometimes feel overwhelmed by stimuli when watching videos that are crammed with info. Those little sensory breaks were pleasant.
Honestly, I would totally buy this when it comes out! The progress on it looks amazing, and I love the unique isometric camera perspective.
We all love these devlogs and the game you are making. Please don’t get burnt out from working so much on the game. I have seen people working super passionately on something without stopping, then they suddenly stop working on it for months.
5:05 oh boi you have an over 9000 setup🔥🚨
watching dev logs is how I get motivation to work on my own projects lol
I can't stop my hands to click when you uploads ❤❤
The game looks so good and your videos are entertaining! I'm happy I found this channel
This is awesome! I love how the game is shaping up
Been waiting for this, love the devlogs keep 'em coming!
i really like the balance of technical vs. design you have in this devlog series!
pls add conquest and exploration in the day, it'll look great on the game
It looks already so polished! keep it up!
I like your choice of wallpaper, Outer Wilds, Noice👍👍👍👍👍
These devlogs are so great. I'm glad you included the brief mention of how most of the progress you show can come across as you guys "breezing by" when in reality it is a constant stream of tackling new problems bit by bit. Game dev is messy. It's great you both build good discipline and approach everything with a mindset that fosters curiosity. A big reoccurring theme in your vids is the importance of having an open mindset and being willing to adapt from your original ideas / plans. What a fun series and exciting game.

Jonas you are awesome! Your channel inspired me when things were tough. Now, my game is on its way to Steam!
As a dev, it warms my heart seeing how you're able to build tools to streamline level design - AND THEN get to reuse them! There's no better feeling.
The game looks super fun. Looking forward to continuing to watch your progression.
Makes up for all the tools made to cover a two second task that takes longer to make than to manually do the task.
@@His-Games Yeah, but we don't need to talk about that 😂
The production quality of these devlogs is INSANE and keeps getting better!
Awesome devlog. You guys are extremely skilled and so smart.
okay that path tool is absolutely epic, could be worth to extract it into an asset for the store even.
of all the devlogs I feel like yours shows the process the best. you could show more code, but I think you have a good balance that leans towards game design. Thank you
Great video as always Jonas, this game is looking very promising :D
Each devlog leaves me speechless.
The editing, the game design, the process, it's all great.
Very nice devlog. Keep going 😃👍
Love the content of the journey so far. Crazy how it went from a card game to this crispy low-poly tower defence/kingdom sim game.
The path maker is such a genius idea
Keep developing your new game! We are waiting
I've been playing this game all night and I had no idea you were making it. This is genuinely one of the best games I've played in a long time, I can't wait to watch it evolve
Good to see a new Devlog! 😍😍
4:16 is my daily life
I really love where this game is going you guys! I will be first in line to buy it :D
That looks awesome! Just wishlisted 😎👍
Ich finde Musik spielt immer einen sehr großen Teil. Sowohl die angenehme Musik in diesem Video, als auch die Musik während des Spielens, kann einen großen Einfluss auf das Gameplay haben!
"Everyday I work on this game I feel myself falling in love with it more and more" I love that for you! The dream. It's coming along so nicely too!
OUTER WILDS BACKGROUND SPOTTED 👀
It's like a 3D 'Kingdom'
this is my favorite devlog on youtube thank you for your work!
Thank you for following along and for your kind words. :)
When working with your paths system, I would recommend using a spline. I personally would recommend the catmull-rom spline
some ideas after watching many of your videos:
- make the characters really cute like Disney, with some character
- add a lot of stupid jokes in your text. People will read if there is something unexpected or to laugh.
- play with zoom and camera angles a bit more, maybe add some close-up animation shots / storytelling.
- add sufficient randomness such that it iss not only a matter of skill: weather is great to totally change a battlefield in an unexpected way e.g. visibility, water, getting stuck
- add some super clever shortcut (potentially to be turned off in the settings or in hard mode)
- a very mountainous level, a very long level, a spiral, connected islands?
- colour palette changes
- a go crazy button for 15 seconds
- a train or caravan
- big and small animals a pets, resource, danger, battle vehicle
- unexpected stuff
- things that start beneficial and that spiral out of hand by growing uncontrolably
- intense and cool-down moments
-
I like the idea with different characters. For things like story and also easier balancing, since you dont have that many options to choose from
The game is looking fantastic and I'm so happy that you're enjoying it!
This is so SO fun to watch, definetly gonna buy the game when it comes out no matter the price, but im also grateful to be able to experience the development process "live"
Love the outer wilds desktop wallpaper! Probably my favorite game of all time.
Wow the game is changing fast from a prototype to a triple A title nice work man
Thanks for posting such interesting videos.
It's a good day when snail man uploads :)
Day 70 was the most accurate representation of game dev in this video. This is not to say that the rest of the content is a falsehood, just more that the pacing of game dev is much slower than the showing off of game dev, and I think that feeds into the idea that one can "crank a game out". Kudos for showing that moment of ALMOST real-life pacing (even day 70 dev was in fast-forward), and yet again another entertaining dev vid!
that analytics screen is surely a never before seen feature if it plots the score in real-time. much better if we can monitor it while the night plays out. Theorycrafting gold right there
5:10 Wow the outdoors, I haven't seen that in a while /j
looks neat congrats !
pvp would be so much in this game
I'm my experience, having different characters makes me want to replay games far more than just different perks. It adds a visual and gameplay difference than just stats. Maybe you could add characters, and split the perks between them, having xp be seperate for each one. You could even get away with more specific perks or perks shared between characters. Just an idea though. Good luck on the game!

Looks amazing!
For the paths you could use a custom shader that blends them nicely using object+world space. Also, HOW DARE YOU stomp on The Hobbit like that? I am disappointed Jonas.... On a more serious note though- love to see you happy and stoked on developing this title. Cheers man, I can't wait for more devlogs.
Looks good, I will definitely enjoy it way more than your previous game - as I've learned with it that I'm just not as good with platformers as I thought haha!
Looking great guys! 😃

The visuals are extremely lovely
Hilarious to watch as always one can't help laughing when Jonas is rambling while conveying his points across, I really look forward to watch the end result.
Make a big snail as a secret boss
im genuinely exited for this
I'm in love with this game
Glad to see how much the game has transformed since the last devlog.
Wow, this is amazing progress and development! I'm excited to see Thronefall on Steam! Just a quick question: how do you create a system where you can build an item (spawn it) at the position of the mouse on a grid-like system (similar to what you are doing in Thronefall)?
Watching a Actual real/Serious/Big Game Project is more Awesome
Yeah, I think I agree. A bit of "filler" content is probably still necessary as game dev is a slow process and I also have too many ideas for videos I really wanna try. :D
@@JonasTyroller Really Appreciate that You Taken my comment In Consideration / Serious in a Good way . Yeah I also Agree 👍 with Your Perspective.
Thronefall on top ❤
Really love your Blogs. They are so honest :)
Any chance to see a Tutorial about your (Schweizertaschenmesser) Path Tool?
Legend has it there's not a problem you can't solve with Johnas path tool
This game looks amazing! I think it s similar to clash of clans and would benefit from being able to move your buildings around. I think this would add a layer of strategy to the game and make it feel a lot more personal. Additionally having buildings take a day/cycle to build would definitely make the game seem more realistic and interesting!
Pretty cool and inspiring video. Thnaks

Lol, the game looks great!!

I feel like you're missing an opportunity by leaving the leader idea on the cutting room floor. I'm reminded of the HoMM series.
You know what this game needs? Mage enemies! ...and also WYS references of course!
always better and better
