I have IR's in Copper Rough & Tough, and I have not had any of the pain and agony people talk about, I have only had mine a little over a month and they aren't completely broken in yet, but I also don't work a job where I am on my feet a whole lot, I work security and mostly sit at my desk, but I love the way they feel on my feet. When I bought my shoes I got the Iron Rangers, Classic Chelsea and Moc Toes and I thought the Moc Toes would be my most worn shoe but they have actually been my least worn and I thought I would only wear the IR's to look nice or something but they have quickly become my daily drivers. only the first week and a half I had to switch shoes to drive home in. I love them and want the black ones like you also have.
I have a pair in Hawthorne that I've now owned for 10 years. I wear them every day. Theyve been across the world on my feet. The leather on mine has darkened significantly to the point that a new set of Hawthornes look like a different leather all together. But its this aging process that keeps me wearing them. They age like a rugged old boy and have a thousand stories to tell.
wow, this is the first time I've heard something positive about the break in on these. I too have heard all the horror stories, and that has honestly been why I didn't get them. I went instead with Danner Quarry. I bought them in 2016, so a year before you bought your boots. Mine have held up too. I have kept them polished. They are fully black leather. I'm amazed that they have held up as long as they have too. When you buy quality, you can expect longevity. I hope you continue to get many years more out of your boots bro. I'm certain I have years yet with my Danners. Take care and keep up the good work with your channel.
Thanks so much bro! Yeah I think a lot of guys break in problems are maybe due to sizing issues or that the last just isn’t a good match for their feet. I’ve honestly never had a issue with break in with red wings. My worst break in was with the Chippewa service boot. Anyways good choice with the danners, those are great boots.
I have a pair of hawthorne's for 18 years and 2 resoles further...through the years I've been collecting the best models in a variety of colors . My last purchase are the 9060 beckman flatbox and the 4331 ranger riders room.I really love them all.The rangers are the most sturdiest.
I bought a pair a few weeks ago. Im still in the break in period with the amber leather you described...so they arent perfectly comfortable yet. There is quite a bit of lateral squeezing at the level of the midfoot but Im seeing good results from pushing a softball into each boot.
I bought my iron rangers cooper rough and tough a week ago. There are only a few shops here in the EU, so I planned a trip from Ljubljana to Vienna for a long time. Went on a trip with my family. It is important to buy the right size, so I did not dare to order the first ones online, I would go the whole size to big, and it would be a disaster. The owner of the store in Vienna is very hospitable, so he immediately disarmed my wife, who did not like the price of the shoes. The seller measured my feet and immediately chose the right size for me. They were really hard but I could feel it was the real deal. The breakin period is still going on. I developed a single blister in the first few meters of walking because I made the mistake of tying my right shoe too tightly. Boots are getting more and more comfortable. Best shoes I ever had and they are still breaking in.
Hah yeah, the break in period was a few months for me. I had bad blisters on my heels but wore them through the pain. I got a size and a half smaller than my normal sneaker size. Boots are amazing now. I wear them all day for work in the office and the field. I mink oiled the insoles to help mold my footprint better/faster.
Love my Iron Rangers 8085 Copper Rough & Tough and 8086 Charcoal Rough & Tough - had both pairs and loved these now they’re broken since I purchased these 6 years ago. I haven’t treated mines with any creams like you, do given them an occasional brush to keep the rough finish of the leather. It’s developed a lovely patina.
Yep, ever since I treated a my copper rough and tough rovers and they darken and completely ruined the look, I’ve been hesitant to treat any of my boots, I just try to brush um of and wipe um down 😁
Only time I ever got compliments on boots was wearing my IR coppers. I have the blacksmiths which I like more, Allen Edmonds, Grantstones, some nice dress balmorals... There is something unique about the IRs

The break in process is nor bad at all! Totally agree. Some of these men re absolute wimps and way over exaggerating it. Of course they are a bit stiff at first. They turn into the most comfortable boots ever! Thanks for the review man.
@@Watchesnwardrobewrong size like too big you think? That’s what it seems like. I got mine 1.5 sizes down from normal shoes and I still have about a pinky’s width at the toe. I hate too much room. But it feels like the perfect fit. My toes don’t touch the front. Still breaking them in, but zero pain.
@@shakebake2680 wow 1.5 sizes down! I only went down a half, yeah I think sizing is gonna be different for everyone. Most the red wing shoe lasts fit me great. I’d guess that blisters and pain in the heel is from sizing too big and blisters and pain in the foot are from too small sizing. Or maybe they need a different width.
@@Watchesnwardrobe thank you for responding. I thought it was wild too going down so much, but when I compare length of IR’s to my regular New Balances, they’re about identical. Also, I only wear thin wool cycling socks with no padding. I don’t like thick socks whatsoever. Which that would’ve made me go up in size for sure. It’s such a toss up. The great thing about Redwing in my experience is that their customer service is tops!! One day I’ll venture into maybe a JK or Nicks boot. But with the horrific wait times and uncertainty of proper fit and then more wait time, it just is too much. And like you mentioned, there is something special about the IR’s… 🔥🔥🔥
A classic that can last a lifetime, annual treatment of boot oil and resoled every 15 years. I love mine and it's the first pair I bought for my oldest son when his feet stopped growing.
I agree, Iron Rangers are special. The 8111s was my first pair of many boots, but still my favourite. I just enjoy wearing them, they are unique indeed.
If you want these boots to fit, find a local Red Wing shop or a shoe store with a Brannock device to properly measure your foot. I go a half size down with both Red Wing and Wolverine 1000 Mile. I wear a mens 10 US in almost every sneaker made. I was surprised when I found out that my Brannock was a 9 because I assumed I was a 10 on everything shoe related. That is not the case with boots. I ended up getting my IRs in 8.5 and they fit well. My right foot is slightly larger than my left, it was like a 9.2 on the Brannock but the 8.5s work. I recommend wearing them slightly loose on the lace up until the leather becomes more malleable.
Your boots look beautiful after 7 years. I'm looking into getting my first pair this spring. Also considering Thursday captains as the quality and price point are outstanding.
Beyond awesome video!! Im glad you made it. Super impressive on these boots. You should be on a commercial w. them for Red Wing. Im ready for my first pair of heritage boots (age 47) and I can afford most out there yet the Iron Ranger seems to be all I need as it seems more than enough in most categories. I plan on owning one pair that does it all for the most. Im old school, a bit gritty & sway more to a tougher boot than a dressy one yet these seem dressy enough. I haven't been impressed by Grants, Thursday, Origin, AE, & others costing more from the Pac. Northwest. Again, thank you.
Great boots. Might want to change up the soles to a softer material when u need a resole. But I have to say the break in wasn't bad. Get the redwing leather foot bed to help. Really does make it easier
I like them, but the Bordon Tukano's are a little cheaper but built a bit better and are a little more comfortable. I still like my iron rangers though and include them in my rotation. They look similar by the way. As for the break in, the Iron Ranger aren't as bad as everyone says. I found the breakin period for the 875 Moc Toe a bit more painful. The Iron rangers fit my foot well right from the beginning. They are stiff but many boots are like that in the beginning. The insole is a little harder but as the leather starts breaking in and takes the shape of your foot and toes, it should be a bit more comfortable.
Your Iron Rangers look FRESH AF. My Heritage 875s are way comfy! One Month, break-ins, seem the Redwing Standard, no matter the model😅 The Best/Most Comfy? When they are returned from the Factory, after the FIRST Resole! Indescribably MORE comfy! Thanks for the Share!

I was lucky and unlucky when I got exactly this color. I slipped in like they were house shoes. It was past winter. I did not have a much feared period of breaking and hurting while this period. The unlucky part began April, May. I did not have thick woolen socks on. In a few weeks my knees got hurt badly. Never ever in my life I had an issue with this part of the body. Why it happened?
