What a great refurbishment of the Iron Rangers. The Vibram soles/heels look wonderful, and the internal work on the soles I'm sure will probably keep them going for another decade or more ! It is so good to see an experienced cobbler being able to do all of the work himself, and having all of the equipment to hand.Sadly in my part of the UK (Sussex) many cobblers went out of business during the pandemic and it is difficult to get shoes/boots so professionally fixed.A really interesting video.
The commando sole looks so much better and gives the boots a rugged look! As always great work Cobbler G, I love how the boots look now. 👏😁👍 Maybe it would be interesting for some of your viewers if you could mention how much a job like this would cost. 🙃
I love the cinematography of video including the camera angles, sound and editing. Appears to be professionally done, high quality. Btw, great job on the boot repair.
Master craftsman! Thank I love seeing the ins of a product and seeing what weaknesses it has and why. I wonder if Red Wing has addressed this? Thanks for sharing!
At 7 minute 47 seconds….noticed your nice shining ring!!!! 😄All the best for your wedding…a fact that you mentioned in the last video before you said temporarily good-bye. I hope you had and have a great time together!👍 Very nice to have you back posting, thanks from Germany, I am a big fan !!
Thankyou brother! Really appreciate it! Check the Redwings and Wedding Rings video, you can see some pics of the day! That's cool the videos reached you in Germany! G
I'm always amazed how the "knife" cuts through those stitches so easily when it doesn't even look sharp, haha. New soles come up brilliant, great job as always mate!
First time watching your channel. The jazz music playing in the background is a nice touch. Great job on the rebuild, Mate. I am newly subscribed and looking forward to seeing more videos of your work. 😎👍
Great work and great content - the camera work, production and tunes are great! Could you have nailed/screwed the heel? How do you decide to do that or not? The leather midsole looks so much better. Should come from the factory with it on already I reckon.
Excellent breakdown of your craftmanship. I noticed you didn't remove all the cork before gluing the gemming back. Is it necessary to remove all the cork and start fresh, or can you leave some left in areas that arent in your way of the glue?
I appreciated the fact you cut a channel for the stitching on the midsole. I should get a pair of Iron Rangers for my rotation but if they have this issue it'd be better just to buy something just a bit more expensive since the job is done right the first time.
Again another great job 👏🏾 The new camera 📷 angles of you are really nice 👍🏾 Hoping you and family are doing great 😊 in new home. Keep up the great job.
biggest problem with IRs is lack of a leather midsole imo. plus a couple other small things like the canvas toe lining. problem is if they made those upgrades standard it would likely push the boot well over $400, at which price point its competing with some very stiff competition from Truman, Nicks, etc.
Love the iron rangers, they could definitely be improved with leather midsole and heel stacks as shown here but then instead of a $350 boot you’d have a $450 boot. These did turn out great though.!
I really like that you added a midsole. A quality one at that too, I don't recall ever seeing JR leather used for a midsole before! It's always bothered me that Redwing doesn't put a midsole on the Iron Ranger.
Yeah it wasn't a JR sole but it was a German Oak Bark tanned one, JR has been bought over by Kilger Leather, same recipe, same technique, new soles are starting to make their way round the world now, and apparently they are just as good, youl see more of em popping up.
I couldn't agree more. I've always been a Red Wing nitrile cork sole over vibram sole guy...mostly because the vibram sole just felt "too thin"/like something was missing. If Red Wing had gone with the midsole like this...I likely wouldn't hold this opinion. Nice video of your great looking work on these Iron Rangers!
@@gregd8098yea I miss the old smooth cork soles. They were outstanding, still got an older pair of 8114’s with the cork sole, love them. The mini lug vibram soles would definitely fair better with a leather midsole
Excellent work and kudos on the midsole. I still can’t dig the chonky vibram soles on iron rangers though. Takes away from that original 1930’s look. Keep up the good work, sir!
I'm glad I'm not the only one interested in putting some thicker lug soles on iron rangers. I asked about that in the store once and the salesperson was like "but why though?"
Not all, I'd ask to see their work first before allowing them to work on anything, I'd do that with any cobbler 👍 I accept mail in orders if you can't find anyone close to you G
Nice work! Is there any way to stitch down the gemming now? Or would you have to tear down the whole boot to do that? Which the customer may not want to pay for all that.
The gemming always seems to me to be the weakest part of Goodyear welted shoes. do any manufacturers actually stitch them to the soles? I’ve seen cobblers do so. I’ve also seen cobblers add a piece of canvas to the sole to keep the gemming in place before adding cork.
I love my rangers, I am wondering if its common to have more cork or another layer of leather to get a little more cushion. Or do most people just add an insole...This is my first pair of heritage boots and I wear them nonstop.
I have a question. Since the welt is stitched to the gemming and the sole is attached to the welt, then the entire upper is only attached to the sole by glue. So in that case the Goodyear welt is not much sturdier than just glue. I am not talking about the recraft ability. When the Goodyear welt was first introduced it was stitched directly to the insole, but as it became more industrialized gemming came into the picture. and if the gemming is not stitched to the insole there is nothing but glue keeping the upper and sole together
I could vibe to this music man, nice choice. Kinda makes me wish i could go to a boot club, get my shoes resoled and have a whiskey and cigarette while i wait, listening to some jazz
The guy's an artist. Not just what he does with old shoes, but how he does it, how he films, the condition of his instruments. It's just all great.
Ah thanks for the comment! Appreciate you dropping by and enjoying the content! Respect to you my friend

would't have the treads on the sole to be inset for like an inch for it to be a commando sole?
It’s crazy how the old and the new play off of each other and really make those boots pop. Great job!
Another well crafted boot revival, Cobbler G! I appreciate your revealing the flaw in the Red Wing Iron Ranger boots. Hope Red Wing is watching.
These came out looking awesome! You're an artist man.

is it possible to add a composite toe to the iron ranger or black smith
Amazing video of those iron rangers looks so good. Just subscribed!
Great video, great work. I did expect to see some nails go back in the heel….maybe they did and it wasn’t in the video. 👍
nice, do you not nail the heel down?

Great video. What do you use to dye the edges?
Its that thick mid sole that makes it. Awesome improvement
Great work. And Great filming. Love this channel.
Nice video, impressive craft.
Nice work sunshine they look great 👍👍👍
Is this the copper or the amber color?
Do you know if they've fixed this on the newest iron rangers? I just bought a new pair.
Don't think they would have changed anything, but you might be one of the lucky ones it doesn't happen to! G
Where r u ?I want thënë same done to mine

Great job only suggestion is please raise your camera up when filming so the viewers can see more of your craftsmanship. Keep up the good work.
Strong craftsmanship! Superchill video!:)
Nice Job G
Cheers brother!! G
Great job. What type of sole is that?
Vibram Montagna 👍
Awesome I think I might get some.
Fantastico ❤
Beautiful work.
Cool hammer technique using the claw to start the nail! I am 60 years old and learned something new today 🤪
Nice! Everydays a school day! Saves the thumb from getting NUMB!

as far as i can tell, this is not a JR sole. also, JR does not exist anymore, we will not see those soles a lot in the future...

Amazing new look and great new sole.

I suppose there are improvements that can be made with most shoes. Job well done.

Excellent 👍🏻
The skill of the cobbler goes well back to even the Roman days.
Looks good.. awesome work
Are all Timpsons cobblers as capable as you? If I hand mine in to my local would they get the same care and craft?

@@CobblerG Thanks for your advice. I’ll remember you accept the mail orders 👍🏼👍🏼
@@CobblerG Do you have an email I can use to contact you for price listings and process etc ?
@cobblerG So when the gemming is messed up is that when you can feel the edge of the footbed in your Red Wing boots?
Exactly right mate 👍

What do you charge to smack a logger sole and heel on an Iron Ranger?
£120

Nice work! Is there any way to stitch down the gemming now? Or would you have to tear down the whole boot to do that? Which the customer may not want to pay for all that.
Yeah it would require a complete stripdown and probably a new footbed entirely! G
Nice looking boots. 👍
Thank you for sharing you knowledge! Nobody explained before why cork should be removed
…magnificent job❗️
you should be massively proud of the craftsmanship and care
greatly appreciated and enjoyed tremendously

New subscriber. Beautiful work.

What's your store called?
Who else loves watching you remake shoes and also watching rick and morty . !!awesome job bro !
Can the cobbler use a Blake Stitch to secure the gemming … so as to eliminate the need to completely remove and repair the footbed?
amazing work, the owner is going to be very happy!
How much would this resole cost , I would have to ship form Ireland, I’d arrange shipping .
Fire a message over to giibbeh@gmail.com we can have a chat there fella! G
Great boots 🥾 👍
Very good job. Brother.
They look great, and the comfort is going to go through the roof.
Damn right dude!
Can you customize the bottom of the red wing boots like a flat bottom.? Or small heal?
Yeah, they can be created to however you like!! G
Neat stuff .
The gemming always seems to me to be the weakest part of Goodyear welted shoes. do any manufacturers actually stitch them to the soles? I’ve seen cobblers do so. I’ve also seen cobblers add a piece of canvas to the sole to keep the gemming in place before adding cork.
In my Dickies video several months back, they stitch their gemming down, which was surprising for a £30 boot!!!!
Why wasn’t the leather spacer in the heel block tapered? Also, how long do the soles stay in the hydraulic press? Thanks, great camera work!
it is tapered have a better look
This looks like the same boot as your TANKS video. Is it?
Different model 👍
Brilliant as always mate
