ICO is one of my all-time favorite games, to the point where I have a giant canvas print of the original Japanese cover art on my wall. I've played it all the way through more than a dozen times. I adore the soundtrack, the art/character designs (the Queen is amazing, she's like the evil stepmother from a fairy tale dialed up to eleven), the environments, and the overall vibe. That said, Dustin's complaints are completely understandable. I think the godawful combat is meant to suggest a feeling of powerlessness and enhance the sense of desperate adventure/escape-you're just some little boy who's never swung a sword in his life, trying to help a girl run away her from Evil Mom's Wacky Puzzle Prison Palace, while scary shadow creatures try to stop you along the way. That is a very difficult needle to thread. It's hard to make a combat system that both (a) imparts that feeling of desperation/overwhelming odds, and (b) actually feels *fun* to play, or at the very least not frustrating. ICO's combat is consistent with its narrative and themes, but it is most assuredly NOT fun, and I'll freely admit I've cursed at my TV screen more than once in my numerous playthroughs. Shadow of the Colossus was much more successful in striking a balance between "combat that makes sense in the world" and "combat that feels fun"-you're going up against enemies that are way bigger and stronger than you, but you still get some satisfaction out of it and feel like you have a fighting chance. In ICO, you're mostly just scrambling to keep yourself and the girl alive. I love that personally, but I can definitely see how that would frustrate a different type of gamer.

@TheHOOfan1 To me Yoko Taro's always felt like a poor imitation of Ueda. Whereas Ueda's design philosophy is intentionally stripped back (earlier builds of Ico were originally much more mechanically dense before he decided that would all detract from the appeal of the game), the shortcomings in Yoko Taro's games feel like they stem from incompetence or pretentiousness. The fact that you have to waste your time on dozens of bad sidequests in Nier Replicant to get all the weapons for the true ending is insane
@@franjaff6919 I spent HOURS trying to get all the weapons to get one of the endings in Nier Automata, but there was some sort of glitch where one of the vendors would never have the weapons I needed for sale, so I just gave up, and stuff like that really soured me on the game, which I already thought was pretty middling to begin with.
Chris seems to be the agreeable type without ever arguing takes on the show. He wasn’t very demonstrative in his apparent disliking of Ico until Colin chimed in
That whole "well where are the hardcore gamers going to go? Microsoft? No, they'll just keep buying games, but they'll be real grumpy about it" had real "we have a console for people who don't want to go online. It's called Xbox 360" vibes. How'd that attitude work out for Don Mattrick and Microsoft again? -_- The staff seemed really quick to dismiss PC and Nintendo as viable alternatives to Sony's complete complacency this generation, which is especially baffling considering how thoroughly the Switch is kicking the PS5's ass in Japan.
Seriously, I love their stupid arguments about how you can't compare Nintendo to Playstation as if it's like comparing apples to oranges. Since when did Nintendo consoles stop being video game consoles that you can't mention the fact that they are mopping the floor with Sony? Yet these same goofbolls were probably talking about how the ps4 outsold the Wii U.
Playstation has entered its Disney Star Wars phase. They generate billions in revenue yet do nothing to get the longtime fans excited anymore. But, according to the Sacred crew, that's fine.
I mean, speaking as a generally Xbox fan, I think it's unlikely Sony are doing nothing. At some point they're clearly going to come out swinging, but it is fair that the SS team aren't giving them the same scrutiny that was constantly given to Xbox when they were in the build up phase. I suppose the difference is trust. Sony have a more proven track record of late, but Xbox is still building their trust back up alongside their output of games. If we get nothing from Sony later this year, and then 2025 is still quiet from Sony, that will be worrying.
Colin has been saying that Playstation will have a big blowout showcase for almost 3 years now. But we're still waiting... Meanwhile, Switch is in Year 8, and they continue pumping out new 1st party games that pleases their fan base
@WahooPenguin1 Oh absolutely, but Nintendo are making very different aort of games. The curse Sony has with its success is that it's built off incredibly high budget games, that are now taking a very long time to make as well, in the never ending quest for better graphics/bigger maps/more realism etc.... On top of that, if you look back at the PS3 and PS4, Sony time most of their release to either the start of the generation to drive console sales, and then again at the end of the generation to maximise game sales to as big an install base as possible. It's an annoying tactic but a successful one for them. It does mean though they will eventually have that big showcase. Just alot of people underestimated how long tit would take PS to have it.
We saw in the leaks that the so called “Fan” are by the dozens and barely buy games yall scream bring this back, add this, do this, and then they sale 1000 copies or barley break even not worth the stress sorry look at trophies MF are just playing games for first 30 mins then bouncing
Hollow Knight is many people's favorite game of all time. It is widely regarded as one of the best Metroidvanias ever made, maybe only ranking behind two of the games which birthed the genre (Super Metroid & Castlevania SOTN). Colin's take is yet another example of him being out of touch due to his inability to understand and accept the opinions of others.
If we all agree that Dark Souls II is the least impressive of the modern Fromsoft games, that’s still such an unbelievably high floor for a studio. Miyazaki obviously operates on a different plane than most creators, but they’re all seasoned vets who’ve worked on some of the best games of all time. They’ll be just fine
Wow Colin is SO misinformed about Alyssa. She's not some victim, she's literally the harasser. THATS why she can't "just disengage". She's the one actively going after people by calling their jobs, their families, tweeting about them, making threats online, etc. She's the bully in that whole situation. And as for the "let's focus on what matters like racist hiring practices instead of Eve's tits!", what Colin fails to understand is that it's all the same ideology and often the same exact group of people behind both controversies. They're inherently intertwined. It's the same people that support not hiring white people that also make a fuss over "sexualization" in media & condone censorship of art they find offensive. It's all the same "war", just different battles.
You obviously didn’t play Spider-Man 2 which removed the cops, has spider-man get involved with an underaged teen romance, and whatever the fuck MJ’s face is supposed to be.
I recently found out about the literacy crisis in Philadelphia. According to Achieve Now "52% of Philadelphia's adults are functionally illiterate, and 67% are low-literate, reading at a sixth- to eighth-grade level. Almost 40% of adult Philadelphians struggle to fill out a job application, to read doctors’ instructions on their medicines, and to help with their children’s homework."
Do you believe that literacy has always been this poor and we are only discovering the fact, or that literacy has declined due to some aspect of our modern world?
@@mpnothanks Apparently phone usage is affecting people's ability to read, which is strange since we read on our phones. I think seeing this literacy rate broken down by age would shed some light on if it really is phone usage.
@@mbern4530 Interesting. I think I may agree, but I’m wondering what it is specifically about phones that would cause that. Maybe it’s just constant exposure to misspelling and poor grammar? Maybe the fact that there isn’t much in the way of proofreading or editing before any random person can say something? Seems likely to me. I’m witnessing someone close to me getting sucked into Discord and then misspelling simple words or asking me how to spell something that I know they know. It’s like a disease that’s spreading, in a way.
Last Defense Academy lost its original publisher and funding. They took out loans to keep going and eventually got funding from Aniplex. It's probably not coming to PS5 yet because that would require even more money since they were initially just targeting Switch and PC before Aniplex swooped in to save the day. Giving them more money at this point, before Aniplex can see if it will be successful, just creates unnecessary additional risk. They'll confirm it's selling and then probably make a PS4/5 port eventually.
Strong man/Steel man argument, just cause the deal never happened does not mean that Sweet Baby Inc did not consider that price tag or threw that number out. They are (possibly) a bit full of themselves these days with working on video games and television/movies consultancy. It’s not unreasonable to think someone in management may have thought that price tag to a Chinese company was a good idea.
Colin’s pugnacious nature towards the literacy competency in modern society, is my reaction to anyone that tries to say we have a lacuna amount of first/second party titles to choose from on PS5.
Colin is right. You should not let your dog piss on other people’s front lawns! It WILL eventually kill the grass no matter the dog if it’s in the same spot all the time.
@digitalXP13 Demon's Souls remake is great, but it's a remake of an already great game. They changed nothing about it besides updating the graphics. There's a whole lot more that goes into From games than graphics.
I think the guys underestimate how many gamers buy a console to pretty much play one game all year, be it CoD or FIFA. I know so many people who only play said games and have hopped between PS and Xbox every generation for whatever reason. Gamers aren’t as locked into a platform as we think, and they could care less about trophies.
3:34:11 - I disagree with this. If you think the PS5 Pro is getting revealed with anything more than a blog post or Mark Cerny Power Hour 2.0, you’re fooling yourself. PlayStation won’t talk about their first-party games again until June 2025.
Bluepoint itself wanted to create original stuff. One of their heads said that when they started to hire for some art departments for the SOTC Remake, lots of artists started asking to work on something original. Also, I don't think it's a new IP, just a new game from a established Sony IP (God Of War, Bloodborne, Uncharted and so on) Edit: Them being listed as a support studio makes sense because they worked as a support studio on GOW Ragnarok as well.
Bluepoint should be mandated, by law, to work on Bloodborne. If it's a Bloodborne sequal, sure that would be amazing. Otherwise a Bloodborne Remake. If it was up to me, the Bluepoint building should be hermetically sealed and no leaves until a new/remake Bloodborne with the fidelity of Demon Souls Remake comes out.
@@mattmanver1 Yeah the idea Sony is purposely holding game reveals back to help show off a Pro model really doesn't sit well with me. It's gonna practically feel like a new generation's launch line-up when this generation (the base PS5) has barely even been able to be taken advantage of yet because no one wants to abandon the PS4.
The whole Sony has no games meme is really nonsense in my opinion. They actually have consistantly more good games than Microsoft. They had the big hitters this year with Helldivers 2, FF7 Rebirth and Stellar Blade, meanwhile Xbox had what? Hellblade 2 was a total dissapointment, the most boring game I've ever played and I'm a damn fan of the original. Yes Microsofts future looks bright, but its future has looked bright for years now but those amazing games never seem to deliver (Redfall, Starfield, Forza Motorsport, Hellblade, etc.
@EvernhamNo9 again those games are not here now. They may be postponed and they maybe dissapointments. FF7 rebirth scored a 93% on metacritic and there is currently only one game for xbox that scored higher than that and its a racing game. If you want to argue sales of games I'm sure you understand Sony also easily wins that battle.
I do love getting to replay games from the ps1, ps2 and ps3. I remember enjoying a game like Sly Cooper but I’m currently playing it and I completely forgot or did not notice what a hassle the camera was back then. Playing it today, having to constantly move the camera around and not being able to change the controls is pretty annoying.
That’s what so great about “Tool” concerts. They don’t let you record. It’s so refreshing! And yet the concert still makes its way onto UA-cam! Put the fucking silicone obsession down people!!
The only reason play-order stuff exists for the Trails series is that for a long time (until last year) we didn't have all of the games we would need to play it in JP release order, and 1-2 of the games that were released in the US really relied on information gained from unreleased games. At this point? If you don't mind 2d RPGs, just play in JP release order. Ys also largely works in JP release order, though some of the new games are actually replacements for older games. (Ys Celceta is an updated Ys 4, Ys Felghana is an updated Ys 3. There's no updated Ys 5 yet.)
The Dragon Quest games did receive mobile ports in the US, but the ones for DQ1-3 were half assed compared to the Gameboy Color versions. Unfortunately, these were the same versions used for the PS4 Japanese-only release and the Switch port we did get in the States. However, the mobile ports of Dragon Quest 4 and onwards were quite impressive, essentially, they were better DS ports even restoring content that was omitted from the North American DS releases.
Assuming there's a connected plot, Release Order assumes you know stuff along the way. References are naturally inherited as a matter of release cadence. In the case of "no plot", but an evolution of systems, the same can sometimes be said though not to the same extent of course since mechanics will (usually) be explained within each entry within a series.
Ryan McCaffrey was quick to delete a tweet about a Sony Wukong moneyhat instead of doing his homework to investigate why the game release was postponed on Xbox. Spoiler alert its the Series S. He has zero integrity an he is just a company mouthpiece.
Is funny how people don´t remember all the Playstation first party in all their consoles, only the more known ones, but they really made LOTS of first party for each console, i could even say that more than nintendo or close to nintendo, i mean, how many people really know all the Psygnosis games besides wipeout and destruction derby??, Colony wars anyone ?, Kingsley Adventure ? a sony first party mascot ?, Adventures of Lomax ?, Tenka and Disruptor or Krazy Ivan ?, first person shooters, G-Police and E-Swat ?, Sentinet, City of Lost Children? and that´s only Psygnosis and not other first party on ps1, how about Everquest, Mark of Kri, PRIMAL which was Playstation´s own Soul Reaver made by guerrilla before killzone, Rise to Honor, the Jet Li game, and the list of obscure sony made games continues on the psp and ps3, i mean, playstation did invested a lot on first party but their products really became important on the ps3 and ps4

And for a show that tries to have a critical eye towards huge businesses and monopolies screwing over the little guy, it's a weird thing to simp for one of the most powerful in Apple. You know the text message thing has always been on Apple's side? The federal government is suing Apple to get them to adopt messaging standards that improve the quality and experience for everyone. A quick google trends research session goes to prove that while both are not that well known, only one of them charts for who said it, and its Comparison not expectations.
I am with Justin on ICO. I tried the game for the first time when the remasters came to PS3. I had never played either ICO or SotC before that moment. ICO didn't hit at all with me, but SotC did. I consider SotC one of the most interestingly original games ever made. There's some proto-souls fantasy in that game, with the silent and unexplained dark fantasy world where your are expected to interpret most of the story by the stuff you see and do in the game. ICO was just not fon for me, even back in the PS3 era it felt archaic. I believe I would have needed to play it back when it originally came out in order to appreciate it, just like I appreciate other old games I did play in their time, but I just wouldn't even dar to suggest people to play for the first time now.
In Virginia, President's Day is just called Washington's Birthday. I wish Juneteenth was "observed" on a Monday like the majority of other holidays other than July 4th and Veterans Day...of course there's no reason Veterans Day can't be observed on a Monday as well.
Really late to this so this likely won't be read, but Dustin, your save gripe with ico is something that is present in much more recent games, like Persona 5, I guess I get your point since I played P5 only recently and found it way overhyped. I had the same save frustration by getting an unlucky random enemy encounter that wrecked me, lost about 20 minutes of progress and took a few days off from it. Also your mc dying being an instantaneous game over, when you have so many revival items? Yeah people have rose-tinted glasses and biases for sure. Also padded "puzzles" more like checkboxes make palaces drag on for way too long. All this to say, yeah some games people consider goat really don't age well when you try them out years later. Gl with fatherhood :)
The "good for its time" argument that Dustin brings up is so pretentious. How about it's fine to not like a game because it doesn't fit modern (note, not necessarily better) game design standards? Why do you have to imply that everyone who likes it doesn't know what they're talking about or somehow that their like of the game is obsolete? Dustin's opinion can be his opinion, but he seriously overreaches by trying to retroactively discredit everyone who disagrees with him with this nonsense "for its time" stuff.
It’s wild that Colin didn’t know about Juneteenth with his knowledge of history. I get what he’s saying about the public not knowing, but it’s wild he didn’t until a few years ago

There are tons of adults who literally can't read in syracuse. It's annoying dealing with them
Alyssa Mercante is the objective villain in this story, why would she stop?
1:56:39 Because it's one of the best games of the 2000s and remains a masterclass in diegetic game design and world building, Colin, that's why.
It hasn’t aged well, and hasn’t withstood the test of time
Not that any one of the SS crew members are qualified to recognize what good game design is.

So stoked for Dragon Quest remake! DQ XI is my first so this will be a great treat!
You should play 7&8 if you can find them. They are excellent, probably the best in the series. 3 is fantastic though, especially for its time.
Original Title doesn't mean new IP
My focus with my kids has always been reading above all else. Once you can read well, you can learn anything you want to.
Chris seems to be the agreeable type without ever arguing takes on the show. He wasn’t very demonstrative in his apparent disliking of Ico until Colin chimed in
3:14 Dustin getting super spicy 🎉😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😅
That whole "well where are the hardcore gamers going to go? Microsoft? No, they'll just keep buying games, but they'll be real grumpy about it" had real "we have a console for people who don't want to go online. It's called Xbox 360" vibes.
How'd that attitude work out for Don Mattrick and Microsoft again? -_-
The staff seemed really quick to dismiss PC and Nintendo as viable alternatives to Sony's complete complacency this generation, which is especially baffling considering how thoroughly the Switch is kicking the PS5's ass in Japan.
“Avenge the death of your daughter in the LAST of us!” 😂😂😂
Playstation has entered its Disney Star Wars phase.
Yes, long may From Software boil Colin Moriarty's piss by being so good
Wow Colin is SO misinformed about Alyssa.

I find Dustin´s picture of Miyazaki on the back highly disturbing, is he part of the cult now ? lol
Thank you Dustin for scarring me for life with your drawing. I'll never look at colin the same again
There are a ton of Aniplex anime that aren't on Crunchyroll, which Sony owns, that tells you how well the "One Sony" initiative is actually followed.
Condescending Nintendo voice "murder your neighbours in, Postal 2, coming to Switch"
Some pretty questionable/ignorant comments in this episode
Colin’s pugnacious nature towards the literacy competency in modern society, is my reaction to anyone that tries to say we have a lacuna amount of first/second party titles to choose from on PS5.
Colin is right. You should not let your dog piss on other people’s front lawns! It WILL eventually kill the grass no matter the dog if it’s in the same spot all the time.
Lollipop chainsaw is a classic, it is actually good. Very unique title
Angry Joe uses the whole 1--10 scale very effectively
Anybody that thinks blue point would get the okay to make Bloodborne 2 is delusional.
I mean demon souls is killer from to bottom and sony owns the IP, it's within the realm of possibility. It's plausible not delusional.
@digitalXP13 Demon's Souls remake is great, but it's a remake of an already great game. They changed nothing about it besides updating the graphics. There's a whole lot more that goes into From games than graphics.
How so? It's not so unique that nobody other than From could do a good sequel
Played Ico for the first time in 2018. Easy 10/10
Also, I don't think it's a new IP, just a new game from a established Sony IP (God Of War, Bloodborne, Uncharted and so on)
Edit: Them being listed as a support studio makes sense because they worked as a support studio on GOW Ragnarok as well.

There needs to be games on PS5 before the PS5 Pro....
@@MyAnalyserDeliberately leaving out that Microsoft has a stacked second half of 2024 is disingenuous. FF7 Rebirth flopped btw.
Sony’s too arrogant and comfortable these days. Why try?
I do love getting to replay games from the ps1, ps2 and ps3. I remember enjoying a game like Sly Cooper but I’m currently playing it and I completely forgot or did not notice what a hassle the camera was back then. Playing it today, having to constantly move the camera around and not being able to change the controls is pretty annoying.

It’s nice to hear that bluepoint is indeed working on their own thing.
Dustin not liking Ico means he is a fake from soft fan.
I won't elaborate further.
I also don’t agree I buy PlayStation to play Sony exclusives because I love their games
