- Evan Hansen (Ben Platt) sings 'Waving Through a Window' a song about his struggles with social anxiety disorder and his longing to be accepted by his peers at high school.
What is Dear Evan Hansen (2021) about?
A screen adaptation of the hit Broadway musical, Tony, Grammy and Emmy award winning Ben Platt (Pitch Perfect films) reprises his role as Evan Hansen, an anxious, isolated high-school student who's aching for understanding and belonging amid the chaos and cruelty of the social media age. He soon embarks on a journey of self-discovery when a letter he wrote for a writing exercise falls into the hands of a grieving couple whose son took his own life.

can't get over the fact we got robbed of hearing Amy Adams sing Does Anybody Have a Map? 😢
Fingers crossed she gets Next To Normal with Patrick Wilson
Yeeeesssss, but also it kinda robbed her character. She just kinda shows up...
Not just that song, “Good for you” was also robbed from us. We could’ve had an upbeat take on the song regardless.
If that didn’t happen, I would have bought a ticket
Isn’t Julieanne moores character the one who sings those songs anyways as Evan’s mom.
the vocals themselves are great but the actual audio quality, is something .
yea right, what was going on? it sounded like live singing?
@@alahnaduplantis1422 I think that the point, that it’s supposed to sounds real and like he is singing right then and there
@@alahnaduplantis1422 I do actually think he sang live.
@@alahnaduplantis1422 Yes, they DEFINITELY were singing live. Even since Tom Hooper came along and ruined Les Miserables for us, it's been "trendy" to have actors sing live in movie musicals. Sometimes it can work, but the sound mixing in this movie is just so horrendous that it turns into a cautionary tale of why you should DEFINITELY pre-record the songs.
I loved hearing the authentic voices. And who Danny Pink (Det. Valens) could sing?
As someone with anxiety, this is an incredibly accurate depiction.
That is exactly why I love this song the most on the movie. Other than Sincerely Me of course.

@@CalebWolfwhy was it his decision? I don’t think he did the casting. Also I can think of many people in high school who look older than he does here. He could be a senior easily.
@@wolfwang8464 absolutely not...his father was the director. He only got the lead because he complained.
@CalebWolf others have done well vocally as Evan...but Ben Platt IS Evan Hansen. I'm ok with them letting him be the lead...if you can suspend disbelief that someone randomly breaks out into song while in the hallways of a high school, you can suspend disbelief in terms of his age.
Everyone talks about the hair, but I love the close ups where you can see how absolutely caked in makeup his face is.
Yeah, but the hair is sooooooooo baddddd. And they took “Anybody Have a Map” out of the movie which made me so angry.
@🦋-Snicker_doodle-🦋 no it's "in" because his face is caked in makeup. You would say his face is caked on makeup, that doesn't make sense
You sure are missing the movie.
I can't see the makeup.
Why is everyone complaining about Ben Platt playing a teenager at the age of 27, when the dude who played Connor is only a year younger than Ben Platt
yeah and he sucks too lmao, nearly all of the casting choices are moronic and nepotistic
The dude who played Connor doesn't look 35. Ben Platt looks double his actual age in this movie
As someone who is not super familiar with the original Broadway version of the show (I've listened to the songs but never watched a recording or seen it live) I really, really appreciated this movie. I get that it's not the same and that it's hard to suspend disbelief about him being the age of a high schooler- but for me it was worth having Ben Platt in it for his incredible vocals and seriously powerful acting. And I can understand frustrations when comparing it to the original- but as someone who isn't comparing it to anything, doesn't want to watch an illegal recording, and can't afford Broadway, this made the show accessible to me- and I found it really deeply moving. I might just request that people ease up a bit on the hate for it when for me, this movie was perfect the way it was and exactly what I needed :)
If the show tours near your area, I think you would really love it.
I understand this because I had the same feeling when I saw the musical WITHOUT Ben Platt starring it so I think it’s the power of the writing/musical itself not the actor that makes it resonate with people

I'm so glad that Ben played Evan. I think he has the best voice for the songs, it sounds so effortless. I can look past his actual age due to how good his performance is
I’m 50/50 while I do agree with his voice for the songs and being he knows the character I disagree about looking past his age when their are many moments he stands out and you can see it and how he doesn’t fit in. I also don’t like what he said during the promotion saying nobody else was gonna play Evan except him and only him because he understood the character more. To me that is a low shot cause the other actors who’ve played Evan on broadway have all done an amazing job
He looks like Steve Buscemi. He looks so old. like ew old.
Fun fact ben platt was the original evan hansen in dear evan hansen
@technicaldifficulties9082 yeah, he shouldn't have been in the movie. He was too old, but his daddy didn't care. Thankfully the only popular thing to come out of the movie is the meme that he looks 20 hears older than the rest of the cast.
plenty of theater kids they could've cast. There's been many Evans on stage. But His dad is a producer of the movie so of course he gets the part even tho he's way too old.
I don’t understand why there is so much hate towards this musical, I honestly loved everything about it. It had an interesting storyline and amazing vocals, what more could you ask for
The issues that most people (including myself) have with the movie mainly have to do with Ben Platt. He’s a good performer, a great singer and a fine actor, but he’s way too old to play Evan. It’s not even just that it doesn’t feel believable, but that you have to highlight how young and naive Evan is for the audience to feel sympathetic. Another issue is why Platt was cast in the film. People who work on the film have said that they were going to cast a younger actor to play Evan, but that they just couldn’t get rid of him. That seems a little sketchy when you realize that Platt’s father was the producer. That’s called nepotism, and it’s not cool. The vocals are also autotuned to no end. Plus, it butchers the original story to an insane degree, adding things that mess up the nuance of the story and taking away things that are almost essential.
I’m not here to tell you to dislike the movie. In fact, I’m glad you like the movie, because our world is full of too much negativity, so it’s nice to hear some positive things. I’m just letting you know why some people have issues with the film.
@@cammm063 Honestly he's not too old to play the character though. I think what people need to realize in regards to that is there are actually high schoolers who look like this, as in, way older than they are. I'm a senior in high school, and we definitely have some students even younger than me who don't look like high schoolers. So I think that criticism in particular falls flat because it's just not true.
I think the real issue is not how old he is but just how they made him look in the film. They must've put a lot of heavy makeup on him or something, that mixed with the hairstyle. It just doesn't look flattering. It doesn't necessarily make him look too old, just not flattering. How he looked in the Netflix show The Politician (where he also played a high schooler) is how he should've looked in this film. That would've made it much better I think. Of course that wouldn't have gotten rid of the changes they made to the story or the weird direction and way some of the scenes were shot.
@@luna-mo3ol i understand that argument. I’m a junior in high school (Evan’s age, actually) but everyone thinks I’m in like college or something. However, I still think the directors should’ve taken into consideration the fact that, if this were anyone but a high schooler, they would straight up be a terrible, irredeemable person. It’s called directorial discretion. We sympathize with Evan because he’s young and naive, and is trapped in these situations where he feels the only way to get out is to continue the lie, and that makes more sense if the character looks the part. A real life adult wouldn’t do that. And yeah, the makeup they used on him just made it worse. He literally looks like a forty-year-old. Even despite that, though, even if there were no makeup or prosthetics, if we’re looking directly at this guy (who’s real age is 29, btw) for two hours, we’re gonna notice that he’s older than the character he’s playing, making it much harder to sympathize with him. If they had just gotten a younger actor (or maybe just kept the show as it is- a stage show), I’d have a lot fewer problems.
@@cammm063 Again, he does look the part because there are genuinely 17/18 year olds who look like that. If you mean it would be easier to sympathize with him if he didn't have such a mature look (which some kids have), then that would make sense. Since of course, one usually would assume that more mature looking kids would also be more mature in general.
It's also important to note that in Pitch Perfect, the first one, he was literally 18 in that film. And he looks basically the same then as he does now lol
@@luna-mo3ol i think we’re making the exact same point but in differing ways and it’s getting confusing lol. yeah, if Evan looked less mature, i could sympathize with him a loooot more, because he would feel more innocent and like someone who would fall into this mistake. but the way it is now is making it difficult to do so.
anyway, i hope you’re having a great day! god bless 👍

As someone who has had pretty moderate social anxiety for a while, some of these lyrics nail it.
Like the movie or not, I truly believe that no one could’ve done better than Ben Platt in this role.
I don't understand why so many people are hating on this movie. Sure, Ben is a little old to be playing a teenager, but I thought that his portrayal of Evan made up for it. Maybe people dislike because they are mad about songs being cut, but I think that the movie had what it needed. I've listened to the cast recordings, as well as the bonus tracks, but I probably won't be able to see the play, at least not in the foreseeable future. I'm a little bit sad about the songs that they cut, but it's an adaptation. They wouldn't have been able to keep everything. Also, if you aren't a fan of the movie, why are you here? There's no reason to be rude to Ben, the other people involved in the making of the movie, and other commenters.
Sorry for the long comment! I'm also sorry if I came of a bit abrasive. I'm terrible at establishing tone lol.
Honestly the problem for me has nothing to do with the actors or their singing (tho Ben my man i may not like you, but your singing is pretty good HOWEVER WHAT WERE THOSE CRACKS HERE) , i'm just very upset at how LAZY the cinematography is...
The biggest issue I have with the movie is the fact that they cut out the 3 songs that proved Evan is NOT a good person. They framed his anxiety and problems in the movie as partially his mother's fault for being overbearing. Listen to Good For You and Does Anybody have a Map. Those songs not being in this movie killed the message at the end
I thought he was believable as a shy anxious high schooler. There have been high schoolers who can pass as being in their 20’s. After seeing Luke Perry in Beverly Hills 90210 as a high schooler, Ben Platt seems totally fine.
I cried a lot when watching this movie. I am doing a lot better mentally now, but I used to be just like Evan, and sometimes I still feel a lot of anxiety like him. I feel for everyone who has ever felt like him. Things do get better ❤
I think that theatre production with showing the screens of phones and social media was the key to success for the line tap tap taping on the glass waving shrouds the window
That’s one thing totally missing
After 1 year of battleing with something similar to social anxiety, i've come up with a wonderful solution to avoid problems; don't talk unless spoken to.
Ben Platt is a beast! What a voice 😍
I mean, everyone complains that ben platt looks too old...I don't know about yall, but I remember tons of kids in highschool looking like 30 year olds. We aren't here for the looks, its all about the story and music
Exactly! And he masters the character perfectly :)
Agree
In Grease John Travolta looks soooo old to me
RIGHT. like he IS evan hansen idc
Yeah but they have the choice to hire whoever they want for this role. He's supposed to be this naive guy who gets caught in a lie because he's young and stupid but it comes across as a whole lot more nefarious when he looks like a 30 year old man.
i do not bother isolating myself. i have gone through this, and i came to realize the best thing is to stay alone. at least in my case.

This song really makes me feel valid. Suffering with anxiety, I relate to this so much.
He played a college student in pitch perfect which was released in 2013. Why would they give him the role of a teenager.
In 1997 a 22-year-old Leonardo DiCaprio played 20-year-old Jack Dawson in Titanic. In 2002 he was 28-years-old playing a 15-year-old in Catch Me if You Can. No-one judged him then. It’s no different.
Like in 2016 or so he was in the Broadway musical of DEH and he was still young and was a huge hit. I guess they wanted someone who pulled the performance with such emotion but they went with Platt. He wasn’t bad. I didn’t even really care whether or not he was too old for the role of a tree loving socially awkward boy, just the music was too loud or the singing wasn’t. That is one of the couple of things I dislike about this movie
Pitch Perfect was actually released in 2012. Not 2013. And second some actors in Grease 1978 were in their 20s or 30s when they played teenagers
@@traydaniel0403 yeah yeah. Or any of the kids in Glee

This is actually a relatable song to be honest
The first time I watched this movie, it made me spiral into depression. Its a super good movie but it brought back so many feelings and anxieties from highschool. Feelings I didn't know I still had. I've been out of highschool over a decade now. Be nice to people in school, it does stick with them forever.
I’ve been out of high school for over a decade myself. I’m still a work in progress as my mom says to me. Though I wish I was doing something big with my life. I still house with my mom and dad. Which is better than nothing. 6 years after winning those 6 Tony Awards, I still wish DEH existed between 2008-2012 when I was in school.
He definitely makes a sound ;) He has the most amazing, dreamy vocals I’ve ever heard
Anyone else think that Ben Platt in this movie looks like a young Will Ferrell
The movie was so underwhelming. They shouldve gotten an actual teen for Evan Hansen. The removal of iconic songs like "Anybody have a Map" and "Disappear" was a bad move. The ending was fresh but it left questions like how was the Orchard still built with people already knowing that it was all a lie. They took a more realistic approach like the hate comments and Alana's realization of the mistake she did but overall, the ending was not it.
What people need to remember is that they need to adapt a stage show into film so some things that worked in the stage show might not have worked in the film.
I’m sure they would have kept those songs if they could.

Simply put, though it's not the story for you, the story might be invaluable to other people. Don't discourage others from choosing to watch it and form their own opinions. Or better, make a new movie that trump this one yourselves!
What a weird comment. You're saying if I find the casting choice of a 30 year old as a high school senior protagonist stupid, I'm missing the point of the story? What?
@@goodyougetastar I aint saying that you're stupid. But Ben is in the origin cast of the musical and has won an accolade of awards (including Tony). At that time, he is already older than the teenager role he played (plus, other singers were also older than teenage).
@@derekh9209 not what I said, but I did misunderstand your first comment. However, I meant that it’s widely considered stupid to have cast Ben as Evan for the MOVIE. Everyone knows he did the musical, and he was great for stage. The announcement of his casting for the movie was widely negatively received, even by the theater community. You’re missing the point of the criticism. We don’t care that Ben is older than Evan. We care that Ben LOOKS like a 30 year old in a sea of people who look like high schoolers. There’s so much more that goes into casting than a great voice, but if you want great voices, there’s literally a recent Evan on Broadway that would’ve been perfect for the movie. No actual logical reason for Ben to have kept the role.
@@derekh9209 I agree with Goody. Ben was great as Evan while he was still in the show, but for the Movie, it would have been a smarter move to cast a younger person. He’s already in his thirties and it doesn’t make sense to cast someone who looks older than what the setting is looking for. And, dare I say, a new actor could have possible shined brighter than Ben.
@@gingermint1230 I'm not disagreeing with you but Ben is actually 28 right now. But yeah he still looks too old for the role. At least they could've pulled a "Grease" situation and cast everybody older so that he didn't stick out as much
the musical is a work of art, knowing Ben worked so much for the movie makes it a great adaptation
Soooooooooooooooo touching even though I have never seen this movie
this movie makes me so happy i love dear evan hansen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Tell me why he looks like Napoleon Dynamite if he was a theatre kid.
Not a fan of that movie
This movie wasn’t bad and I’m happy there is a film representation of this. However, nothing will beat the musical especially with the musical numbers they missed out here. I can’t say I liked the new songs
Breaks. My. Heart😭😭😭😭😭💔💔💔💔It hurts me😭😭😭
I have no hopes of seeing this on broadway, which is really frustrating. But I love that there's this movie version. I've seen this when it came out and the songs, the story, it hits so hard that I cried most of the entire time watching it. I've seen reviews hating this film, hating on Ben Platt because he doesn't look teen, and one review even said that he looked like a creep and anxiety doesn't even portrayed well, BUT I disagree. The film, though I feel like it's lacking something, but the scores were great, Ben's delivery was great, so powerful that he bring people to tears. He pass as a teen. Not all teenagers are wrinkle free or whatever. I'm so glad I've watched this film and discovered an underrated singer as well. Ben Platt is such a gem!
Amazing camera work! And hearing Ben is always nice too
Ben is amazing!
honestly I see a lot of people say he looks way older than a senior but he honestly looks younger than my senior brother and the rest of the seniors in my school 😭
I love this movie so much!
So beautiful
I can’t tell if he recorded it or sang it live
It's live if you can tell in certain scenes
Its live
He was going for the Academy Award so he went live, which is how Anne Hathaway got her Oscar.
It's the hair. If they had just done something with the hair, it would have been so much more believable.
That's his real hair, not a wig.
@@susantherestorer I understand that. I'm saying that the hair ages him beyond a believable teen. His haircut used in the stage musical was fine.
@@pettydus They were trying to make Evan look like he wasn't taking care of himself. It's obvious in both versions (I watched the slime tutorial) that Evan doesn't eat properly, he doesn't have much in the way of friends, and he's depressed (plus taking medicine for his anxiety). So, in a play, people can sort of get away with things that would be more obvious in a film. In the play, Evan is more exaggerated since the actor has to play it big for the audience in the back. But in the movie, the filmmakers toned it down, since things are closer up. Waving Through A Window movie version, is a song that takes place entirely in Evan's head. We see close film cuts, repeated turn-arounds, exaggerated sounds in time with the song beat, all to get inside the main character's inner turmoil. He's really walking into school, the classmates are really walking around him, but the song isn't actually happening; it's all in Evan's head. So I think what people tend to not understand about the filmmakers' and actors' choices about how they made this film, is that everything is used to tell the story: the songs, the cinematography, the lighting, even the make-up and hair. So, it's okay if you don't agree with me. I just wanted to point out what I saw in it.
people are judging the fact that ben is still playing evan and looks too old but would complain if he was replaced with another actor LOL
That's so true. I'm glad to see him, I love his voice much and have rather him look a little odd than have a completely different actor do it
Having never seen the musical or the movie (so take my opinion with a grain of salt) I think that this scene is incredible.
I’m a bigger fan of the music than I am of the story
he did amazing I don't understand the hate nor will I ever he looks like people that were in my highschool and he portrays someone who has anxiety to the tee. I LOVED this movie the acting was amazing the singing was even better
I just saw this movie for the first time last week. I never saw it on Broadway and the only song I had ever heard was You Are Not Alone but it was from a cover. I only knew Ben Platt from his song, Imagine (which I love). First, I never thought he looked too old. I had no problem believing he was a teenager. I know lots of people who look older than their age. Also, I think it is silly to hate on him for that because many adults play teens. Tom Holland as Peter Parker and Luke Perry and Gabrielle Carteris on 90210 were much older adults playing teens. I have watched this movie four times and can't stop listening to the score. It is incredible and Ben sings it so amazingly. Waving Through a Window and For Forever are my top favorites. Sincerely Me, was so funny and wonderfully entertaining. I love this movie and am so glad to have finally seen DEH. I recently watched a bunch of Ben's performances on Broadway and heard him sing in older interviews and I think his voice is even better now in the movie. I prefer the movie soundtrack to the Broadway one.
I'll say it if no one else will: his first t-shirt was better. 😂😂
I guess I enjoyed the movie but I could 100% feel how others did not like the movie as I was watching it.
i just want to give him a hug yk?
