B) HE IS A KID THAT HAD TO LIE TO GET EVEN ONE PERSON TO BE THEIR FRIEND! It is absolutely realistic that he does not look 100% like your typical teenager. SPOILER ALERT: This scene used to make me so angry that the quiet awkward kid could lie to this grieving family’s face and be so manipulative. I didn’t care what the excuse was or how socially anxious he was. But then I read a comment that really made me rethink this entire scene: that a young teenager who was suicidal reimagined that dark moment as Connor being there and helping him up instead of feeling so alone in one of the lowest moments of his life. That made me pity him, truthfully.

This scene sounds great and is acted well by Ben. He's a very talented actor. It's just the hair and makeup. I wholeheartedly believe if they styled him to look like he did in The Politician (a great show btw) it would be far less distracting. Or, just make it an animated movie and have Ben voice Evan. There is so much untapped potential that could be found if they made animated Broadway adaptations. Still, I am one of the few people who think this is a pretty decent adaptation. It's not perfect. It has some glaring flaws, but it's still pretty faithful to the stage show (and yes, I've seen the touring cast).
a lot of people hate the plot of this story because "he's lying" and "he's a manipulator" but that's not how i see it. it's the reason connors dead. his mom *doesn't listen* you see time and time again throughout this musical and is implied through Zoe that their mom *doesn't ever listen to anybody* she didn't listen to connor when he was outwardly crying for help by acting out and being terrible, bouncing him from one treatment to the next. she *doesn't listen* to evan when he tries to tell them that there's been a mistake. she *doesn't listen* when he tries to tell them that he didn't know connor just before this song. the only time she LISTENS is when he shouts that it's all spiraled out of control and it was all made up. that's the only time she listens, when evan actually sticks up for himself. and as someone like evan, speaking up to someone with higher authority than you is friggin terrifying. we really do need to talk about how cynthia is a main part of her sons death more :/
Ben certainly does have an amazing voice and I really like his singing, but I'm going to be honest, he unsettles me so much in this movie. Like Ben looks like a normal guy, but they've got him in this makeup and have him try to look like a child despite the fact he's not and he just looks so off--He's a great broadway performer, where you aren't seeing up so close, but on the big screen not so much
This song touches on so many levels Here he is trying to make connors family hopeful ..helping them cope At the same time he is portraying his desperation for a true friend And how he wished he had that friend like connor who would have grabbed his hand and come for him when he fell from the tree When in reality noone was there with him when he fell 😢
Idk why he got so much hate for looking too old to be a highschooler, like bruh, I have seen highschoolers who look like him, some looking like they work a 9-5.
I loved is voice, but I don't think it was a well directed film. I kept willing him to blink because it made him a look bit starey-eyed and creepy which is a shame because the live clips of him I've seen on youtube don't give me that lol
I can’t with his look. A 28 year old passing as a 17, 18 year old. I just can’t. They should have casted someone else. His look was way better on stage than on motion picture.
Idk, I had no problem buying it, my parents and I have worked with teenagers for years and he looks like plenty of teenagers we've worked with. Don't get why he gets hate, his performance is perfect here imo.
Yes I agree. He is one in a million in terms of vocal talent, but he wasn’t the right choice for this movie. Kaitlin is lucky in that she isn’t that much younger, but she could pass for a teenager
It's really not. He's really not. The only statement that the Murphys fill in details about is the orchard. You could call that some mixture between shotgunning and the Barnum effect, or you could just say, "He panicked and made a lucky guess". You know, like it says in the script. It's also kind of *the point of the whole dang musical* that Evan creates his own version of Connor instead of trying to glean information.
He portrays social anxiety in a way for any one can understand and him singing is his way of communicating without thinking of what others think.

This was amazing he has such a pure voice and it’s effortless and it was a great movie shows that people just want to be seen and heard
SPOILER ALERT:
This scene used to make me so angry that the quiet awkward kid could lie to this grieving family’s face and be so manipulative.
As someone if not very familiar with this musical, your comment has helped me reframe what is happening in this scene. Thank you for passing it forward.
He didn’t outright lie, Connor’s mom does now want to listen on Evan was saying in earlier scenes. Evan was lying because he was pressured to do so.
@@ler378 Exactly! Thank-you.
@@Ringohulk777I think that really is the intent specially when you realise this. when he tells his mom that he didn't fall but he let go. I cried so much.
I’ve never watched this film, but this really gave me chills…
Incredible overall experience
One of the better movies I’ve seen in a few years. I don’t care about the critics, they’re paid to be miserable and "edgy". This movie was so uplifting and also heartbreaking at times.
How anyone could be critical if this performance is beyond me. I loved the movie and he was absolutely fantastic. I sobbed my heart out the first time I watched it. Delighted it’s there for all time. Was disappointed they dropped some of the “mom” songs though!! Always loved anyone have a map.
Too old.
@@johnrain7308 I disagree.
“Quoting songs by our favorite bands” idk about yall but the cast of DEH is my favorite band ❤
BEST MOVIE EVER
if you're STILL saying that Evan lied so he could get a girlfriend I'm going to assume you didn't pay attention to a single second of the story and that you just let the internet tell you what it's about
His side eye to Zoe in "girls we wished would notice us but never do" is OSCAR WORTHY
I absolutely love this musical!
I understand why everyone doesn't like Ben Platt playing Evan but I love it. I like that Ben also has anxiety like Evan and his singing is truly spectacular. It makes him look like a teenager to me and since Evan gets bullied at school I do too because of my Autism and problems.
This is my second favourite Broadway song

End of May or early June
This picture-perfect afternoon we share
Drive the winding country road
Grab a scoop at À La Mode
And then we're there
An open field that's framed with trees
We pick a spot and shoot the breeze
Like buddies do
Quoting songs by our favorite bands
Telling jokes no one understands
Except us two
And we talk and take in the view
All we see is sky for forever
We let the world pass by for forever
Feels like we could go on for forever this way
Two friends on a perfect day
We walk a while and talk about
The things we'll do when we get out of school
Bike the Appalachian trail or
Write a book or learn to sail
Wouldn't that be cool?
There's nothing that we can't discuss
Like girls we wish would notice us but never do
He looks around and says to me
"There's nowhere else I'd rather be"
And I say, "Me too"
And we talk and take in the view
We just talk and take in the view
All we see is sky for forever
We let the world pass by for forever
Feels like we could go on for forever this way, this way
All we see is light for forever
'Cause the sun shines bright for forever
Like we'll be alright for forever this way
Two friends on a perfect day
And there he goes
Racing toward the tallest tree
From far across the yellow field I hear him calling, "Follow me" There we go
Wondering how the world might look from up so high
One foot after the other
One branch then to another
I climb higher and higher
I climb 'til the entire
Sun shines on my face
And I suddenly feel the branch give way
I'm on the ground
My arm goes numb
I look around
And I see him come to get me
He's come to get me
And everything's okay
All we see is sky for forever
We let the world pass by for forever
Buddy, you and I for forever this way, this way
All we see is light
'Cause the sun burns bright
We could be alright for forever this way
Two friends
True friends
On a perfect day

I was Ben and still am 😢I'm married but no one really sees me. Just want me to listen to them talk bout themselves nonstop. Then get told why don't I be more confident
Been reading the comment section and realized they probably haven't seen the stage show yet
My brother loves Ben Platt so so much!
1:48 The side eye is a bit too much 😂
2:24 oh my _gosh_ theres going to be visuals for this fake flashback HELP I'm already crying singing along
I'm back, this is the most beautiful shit I've ever heard.
Its scary how much I relate to Evam Hanson
One of the few examples of nepotism I’m all for! 😂❤
A beautiful performance 😢
Gets me every time.
I just love him
Very touching story about life opportunities
a lot of people hate the plot of this story because "he's lying" and "he's a manipulator" but that's not how i see it.
it's the reason connors dead. his mom *doesn't listen* you see time and time again throughout this musical and is implied through Zoe that their mom *doesn't ever listen to anybody*
she didn't listen to connor when he was outwardly crying for help by acting out and being terrible, bouncing him from one treatment to the next.
she *doesn't listen* to evan when he tries to tell them that there's been a mistake. she *doesn't listen* when he tries to tell them that he didn't know connor just before this song. the only time she LISTENS is when he shouts that it's all spiraled out of control and it was all made up. that's the only time she listens, when evan actually sticks up for himself. and as someone like evan, speaking up to someone with higher authority than you is friggin terrifying. we really do need to talk about how cynthia is a main part of her sons death more :/
God I Love this part
Currently have a cold and a massive headache, but this song help immensely. I applied for my first job and have an interview on August 29th. :)
this is beautiful
Ben certainly does have an amazing voice and I really like his singing, but I'm going to be honest, he unsettles me so much in this movie. Like Ben looks like a normal guy, but they've got him in this makeup and have him try to look like a child despite the fact he's not and he just looks so off--He's a great broadway performer, where you aren't seeing up so close, but on the big screen not so much
"like girls we wish would notice us" *Evan glances at zoe*
Moved me to tears
This makes me cry 🥲😢
Yall i am balling
This song touches on so many levels
Here he is trying to make connors family hopeful ..helping them cope
At the same time he is portraying his desperation for a true friend
And how he wished he had that friend like connor who would have grabbed his hand and come for him when he fell from the tree
When in reality noone was there with him when he fell 😢
In hindsight, Ben is the perfect Evan but the biggest flaw is that the post-production makes him look like he's 35.
Larry: Zoe, go get the shotgun!
Zoe: But he’s still singing-
Larry: GET THE SHOTGUN!!!
Incredible
Idk why he got so much hate for looking too old to be a highschooler, like bruh, I have seen highschoolers who look like him, some looking like they work a 9-5.
I found out a friend of mine took his own life today and immediately I thought of this song
Can you do a little closer by Colton Ryan the song at the very end at the dear Evan Hanson film
내가 제일 좋아하는 곡
@@gabrielvermund he is great don't get me wrong. I just think it would have been better with someone else as that character.
Yes I agree. He is one in a million in terms of vocal talent, but he wasn’t the right choice for this movie. Kaitlin is lucky in that she isn’t that much younger, but she could pass for a teenager
@@Azza_amb kind of hard to argue that given the reception to the movie. Haha.
He was actually 27 when he filmed it. This movie was released on his 28th birthday though
THIS IS COLD READING, EVAN IS COLD READING THE MURPHIES
?
It's really not. He's really not.
The only statement that the Murphys fill in details about is the orchard. You could call that some mixture between shotgunning and the Barnum effect, or you could just say, "He panicked and made a lucky guess". You know, like it says in the script.
It's also kind of *the point of the whole dang musical* that Evan creates his own version of Connor instead of trying to glean information.
Ahhhh-mazing!
