Those who fix records with masking tape and those who make vertical videos with their phones should serve at least 10 days of community service. This should be a new federal law! Thanks for the video, man.

I agree wholeheartedly! One year later and the Great Uinformed STILL hold their phones vertical on great panoramic views. What is this dull brain process that allows this crime?!! PS. 20 days community service.

Masking tape is for the Morons who have no idea. It's better to just leave it split and place it in a clear vinyl sleeve. Sheesh, what cheapskates.

I've done a few repairs like this but since I didn't have a spare generic sleeve to cut up, I used a standard office folder from a file cabinet-the paper is already folded that way, but it is still strong, plus it's quite thin, so it doesn't affect the width of the repaired sleeve that much.

I'm so cheap I'd use a frozen pizza box instead of cutting up a new generic album cover. I've thought about trying something like this. Your video has been helpful if I try a repair.

  • @brianshickey

Thanks for the video. I’m going to try this with shipping paper.
For smaller splits that are a bit more jagged, I’ve used a small amount of crazy glue dabbed just on top of the split. It forms an impenetrable barrier that’s somewhat invisible. For black sleeves, I go over the split with a black sharpie first to camouflage the split, then apply the crazy glue. As long as you use just enough (and not too much), in most cases the split is invisible and the sleeves actually look much better with the black touch ups. I’ve saved dozens of expensive albums this way and actually increased their value because of the new condition by changing what were ‘VG’ sleeves to VG+ or even NM- in a few cases. Give it a try on an old album that doesn’t mean much to you. With not much practice, you’ll be salvaging your damaged sleeves in no time.

BRILLIANT METHOD!!! Thank you for sharing!!! As far as old tape on classic album covers. There's a product called, "UNDO". It safely removes tapes, stickers, as such without damaging the item. They have a UA-cam video where duct tape was safely removed from toilet tissue paper. The tissue paper was undamaged!!! You may want to look in on it. Many collectors highly recommend it!!!

This is actually a good video on how to fix it there’s videos online of idiots telling you to put all different types of tape on your record cover and it just destroys it more over time and makes it damn near impossible to repair properly without destroying the artwork.. countless great records I’ve found but decided not to buy because the previous person who own it covered it in packing tape

this is also the reason why I use the polymer clear dust sleeves to protect the jackets & Lp's. granted, they may possibly split if mishandled by anybody careless, but I rule my collection with an Iron Tone Arm. If I catch a person man handling any piece of my collection, the individual gets "Man-Handled" in the same fashion-golden rule,Touch Not. lest Ye Be Touched.

I just the same technique except linin photo paper (much thinner and way stronger than cardboard) and I place a sheet of parchment paper in the fold of the fix paper to avoid the two sides sticking together if the glue oozes. Binder clips work well. Any glue will work but “school glue” is more than adequate.

I used Gorilla glue to fix a seam split or seam separation not tear and luckily i knew not to use much the type of glue since it spreads and foams up on some surfaces. The album i used to fix the seam split was a 2008 Analogue Productions issue of Cannonball Adderley Somethin Else. I was pissed off since it came split even though it was factory sealed. Another jazz title i received brand new was 2008 Analogue Production issue of John Coltrane Blue Train. The record sounds very good possibly the best the album will ever sound. There was a slight top seam split i plan on fixing it with Elmer's glue. Great video thank you very much! I have a few more albums with more serious seam splits on much older records I'll use this method thanks again!

Helpful vid, thanks for the info. I tried this myself after seeing your video and found that I could easily get Priority Mail envelopes for free from my local post office. The envelopes are strong enough and are already creased. All I had to do was cut them to the length I needed and follow your simple steps. The result was amazing and the thinness of the envelope didn't compromise the original cover. Again, thanks for the vid!

For the inner hinge material, I like to create from an actual discarded album cover. This makes it closer to the colour and material as the original, and a less visible repair when you look inside the sleeve. Good job though... the wood glue and clamping tips are excellent.

I would just glue the actual record sleeve and repeat two or three times for added strength - like you say near the end of the video. I also place all my covers in a plastic sleeve and NEVER store the record in its sleeve - to protect the entrance part of the sleeve from tears and scuffs etc. Having the record in the inner sleeve outside the cover but inside the plastic sleeve also protects against damage from slight temperature flux condensation.

Hello, thanks for your informative and creative video! I imagine seam splits on the side closest to the binding might make it difficult to slide inner sleeves into the outer cover though :/
Do you have any ideas on cleaning fingerprints off of the inner album sleeves?
I haven't had much luck finding solutions to cleaning album sleeves online, only covers and the vinyls themselves. Although I suppose just replacing the inner sleeves with similar new ones is a good solution

I use a hair blow dryer to remove stickers and tape from my album covers. I usually repair my seams very similarly to the way you do. Sometimes if I'm not really that concerned about it, I'll just glue the new section to the outside. I know this drive whoever inherits my collection when I'm dead crazy, but sometimes it's just easier that way.

very cool, i think if i was going to try this, i would make the folded piece span from end to end, and not just an inch or so longer then the split. on rear occasion ive been known to use a 24 piece colored magic marker set to color-blend flaws, such as inappropiately removed price tags and such. maybe you could color-blend the busted seam before glueing it ...just a thought. awesome video and thanks for sharing this great idea

nice job, Mig. BTW, for removing tape/glue from a cover, you may want to try using a heat gun or hair dryer to loosen up the tape, then slip a razor blade under the tape and slowly pull off the tape. I have used this technique for removing price labels and works great, I have not tried it on a long strip of tape, but it should work. Then, to remove the glue left behind, use acetone or naptha (lighter fluid) and work it with a Q-Tip a section at a time, cleaning behind with a paper towel...

Cool tips on fixing album covers !!! Myself , I've repaired 45 sleeves and sleeves for 78's . Some of those 78 papersleeves can be damned maddening becuase the paper is so thin. I first start off with a stem iron I got at a yard sale . I start steming the paper to get it to relax and lay down . This also relaxes the paper and removes ugly creases . Once the paper sleeve is flat then I use acid free artist masking tape on the INSIDE of the cover and cut it to fit the tears and once the tape is in place , I again use mt steam iron , (only this time NO STEAM0 , and iron across the taped area to insure a solid bond when the paper cools . then I put a narrow seam of white glue on the overlapping borders and pass the iron over it an BINGO !!! an almost invisible repair . Oh one other thing migkiller 1971 , listen to yourself on this video you made . You're too close to the mic ,,, you are breathing like an old industrial boiler from 1905 that's ready to blow out it's seams !!! Your gasping for air like an olympic runner . CHEERS !!!!!

They have these things called "inner" and "outer" sleeves. They are made of a clear plastic material. If you put the cover in an outer sleeve and the the vinyl album itself in an inner sleeve, and then put the inner sleeve right behind the cover in the outer sleeve, you shouldn't have to repair it at all. Who says the vinyl record has to be in the cardboard sleeve? This is unnecessary.

    • @deannaambriz9102
      @deannaambriz9102 2 роки тому

Your way is practical, yes...but it's just not as cool as having the record in the sleeve.
It's an aesthetic thing, I guess.
If I'd started out doing things your way, I'm sure my collection would be in much better shape.❤️

The problem with this is that it can (and probably will) impede putting the disc back in the jacket. An easier method (if you use the right kind of tape) is to apply the tape to the outside of the jacket, length-wise, and if you do it carefully, it's hardly noticeable.

    •  6 років тому
