I am truly enjoying the comedy on this channel! Loving the trip so far, just wish they’d solve the problem with the stabilizers. Good job on the oil change. One tip I’d give is for you to partially fill up the new oil filter before you install it with new oil. This way the engine is not running empty while it waits for oil to go through the filter and into the engine. Belated Happy Birthday Renee! Welcome back!

Seeing another Awanui adventure appear is an absolute highlight as I have my morning coffee. The Greek islands are truly beautiful and love seeing them. The oil change was so interesting and was so relieved the oil didn’t go everywhere! Good job! You guys are such a joy to watch as you continue this wonderful journey and learn the in’s and out’s of your beautiful Nordhavn, follow all the new customs of various countries, and finally, hopefully get the stabilizers fixed! I love your videos that show all the trials and tribulations of boating. It’s not always wine and roses. Regarding the oil change, a trick I use with the oil filter is to punch a hole in the bottom with an awl or similar tool and let the oil drain out for a few minutes into a suitable container till it stops. No fuss, no muss.

Love the warts and all video, team. Oil change tip: once the old oil filter is loosened, use a plastic bag (we used supermarket bags that are no longer available) like a glove and continue loosening so that when the filter is free, all spillage is contained within the plastic bag. With care you get no oil on your hands or engine block, and none in the bilge. Even without stabilisers, Awanui NZ was well behaved in the short sea. A lovely vessel.

@@AwanuiNZ Yep, I was going to say something similar. I use (N47) two Ziplock bags: first one is big enough to hold the filter with oil and a second bigger one holds the whole thing. No spillage and easy disposal when you get to a proper oil disposal facility.

😂 I broke out in hysterics when you took off in the tender with Jen-Pierre. After settling quietly into his seat the throttle went to full power his narrow brimmed potae nearly blew off, he held on to it in his mouth and proceeded to be violently bumped around and no doubt got very wet. Would have gone down well in a Monty Pythons skit.

Great video again and you found a nice anchorage near Santorini. That will be a birthday to remember for Renee, once in a lifetime experience !
Also good to see you had a calm passage over the Aegean, at least no crossing at high winds and seas. But a bit of a shame of what ABT has delivered to you. That system should have been functioning flawless, so make sure you get it 100 % fixed before warranty runs out. Hope they won't tell you to come back to Turkey for it.
Like others I have again a few tips, you decide if you like them or not and want to use them.
    - If you carry your dinghy always on the dinghy deck, be careful not to inflate the tubes to full pressure when the dinghy is on the deck. Once you get to July and August it will become so hot that the pressure inside the tubes just keeps building up and it can rupture the tubes. Don't ask us how we know. 😀
Also for your dinghy, have some covers made for the tubes, it will not only keep them clean, but it will also make the dinghy last longer. The glue between the parts of the tubes dries out in the summer heat real fast, so any protection you can give them helps preserve the dinghy.
    - For going stern to there are several options. Either you buy 2 or 4 times the pre made rope loop (4 mtr version, not the 3 mtr version) or you buy 2 (or 4) times 5 mtr of 8 or 10 mm chain (galvenized, not stainless steel). If you are going stern to around a tree you have to use (mandatory) the rope version, but if you have to wrap around a rock don't use the rope version, use chain and connect if with a D-ring to your land line. The rocks can (and will) chafe the rope version, you could be in for a nasty surprise if there is a bit of wind during the night.
Only when the anchorage is really calm and there are no other boats we will use one land line, but most of the time we use 2. If circumstances permit and we stay somewhere longer we will actually use 4 land lines. Two to the stern and two to the side. That way we can never end up on the rocks.
Also, don't let anyone else use the same rock or tree to wrap their land line to. If they wrap their loop around the rock or the tree over your loop, you won't be able to leave, you will have to wait until they leave.
The land line also comes in handy when you have to go back to retrieve the landline. Keep the stern and bow of the dinghy tied to the land line with a D-ring and your dinghy won't slam into the rocks while you are trying to untie the loop around the rock. At worst it will be the bow that hits the rocks, but not the side tubes.
Lastly, buy some small floating buoys, and tie them at intervals to the land line. That way others can see you have a land line out and they won't come racing through with their dinghy. Those things can happen when the charter season starts again, charterers are not known to have great knowledge of boats.
    - As for tying up the dinghy to the boat, your dinghy has a connecting point on the bow (where you tie it down on the deck), put a D-ring in there and tie the line to that D-ring, it cannot come loose anymore. Otherwise, do it as you do now, but go first through the middle of your cleat, then go left and right around back over the cleat. It won't be able to come loose. As an added safety, tie the stern of the dinghy, with a D-ring and a bit of line to the land line. If the dinghy comes loose on the bow it won't drift away since it is tied to the stern line. On top of that it will prevent the dinghy from slamming into the boat when the wind changes.
    - I already mentioned D-rings, they come in extremely handy, don't cost that much (couple of euro a piece), just always make sure you have enough of them in every sizes. Can buy them at a chandler, but any Chinese wholesale shop also has them and they are much cheaper there. We normally carry around 20 onboard, so can easily grab a new one if you drop one in the water (and yes, that happens as well 😀) there is no need to go diving, just grab a new one. Put some grease on the pins and if you use them for mooring (or any other long term use), make sure to lock them with a wire or an extra pin. Most D-rings are galvanized (or not even), so eventually they will corrode and then you simply discard them, start using a new one.
    - To protect your mooring lines buy a couple of inner tires for bicycles and pull the line through. That way you protect the hull when you are moored. The tube will also prevent chafing, which is the biggest problem if you loop lines back to the boat in a mooring field or in a port.
    - When you grab a mooring buoy spend some time to inspect the underwater connection of that mooring buoys. Many buoys don't get any maintenance whatsoever and that might not be a problem for a 7 to 10 ton sailing vessel, but our type of boats are much heavier and catch much more wind. The strain on the mooring buoy in a stiff breeze could become too much for the mooring buoy if that thing is poorly maintained and you will find yourself on the shore. Just take a look at the channel of wandering hillbilly and you will see what the consequences can be.
    ua-cam.com/video/Q2UU2w4Ok0g/v-deo.html
    - Last tip and hopefully we don't annoy you with all these tips. To make your life a bit easier when removing the full oil filter, drill of poke a hole in it on the side (have to hold a bucket below to catch the oil) as low as you can (bottom is not possible since it is a double bottom). The oil in the filter will drain out and when the oil stops coming out, clean the side and tape it off with some masking tape. The filter will drain to that level and it will make taking off the filter a lot less messy.
After the oil filter has been changed put again a bit of masking tape on it and write the date plus engine hours when you changed the filter. That way anyone can see in an instance when the filters (and most likely oil) was changed.
In any case we enjoyed watching your video again, looking forward to the next one.

lol - another fun video. My little bit of input.
Always run a safety line to a mooring , and go to a different cleat. That gives redundancy line and cleat, plus if the boat watches (not stern ties) it distributes the load.
As may have already been mentioned, put a small bucket under the filter - it’ll collect the oil and you can drop the filter into it.
That chain lift is killing me! I think you are already going to replace it, but for now think about zip tying some some rags around areas contacting the tender as chafe gear.
    Keep em coming!

    • @johnhanzl6168

@@AwanuiNZ Regarding your mooring setup? Meaning - in your video you ran a line from the stbd cleat, out to the mooring and back to the same cleat. If that cleat or line fails for whatever reason, your boat is no longer attached to the mooring. Therefore, once you are secured to the mooring like you are, then run a second line from the port cleat down to the mooring and back to the port cleat. This is your "safety". If need be, you can use your tender to assist this. What we do is once secured to the mooring with one line (my wife at the bow and me at the helm) she directs me to move the boat so it's back up the the mooring. She already has the safety on the opposite cleat ready to go, so when we get back up to the ball she runs that free (bitter) end through the mooring and back to the cleat.
Side note: don't run a line from one side, down to the mooring and back up to the other side as this will cause a sawing motion as the boat watches around the mooring.
      Hope this makes sense...

Another good one mate, glad you are enjoying the boat, bummer about the stabiliser hyd rams though. I don’t really like telling how to do things to people on other boats but here is a few tips that you may find handy. It is always a good idea to coil up and stow away your ropes, and not leave them laying on the deck as it looks like you have been, reason I say this is because it is easy to get them washed over the side if you go down on a wave, next thing you know you will have one around the prop and that will ruin your day. It is good when tying up to the shore to have a loop of chain or a wire strop to put around the rock, then run your stern line from it, because them sharp rocks can cut through your mooring line in no time. When you are doing your oil change if you get a old 5 L water bottle, cut the top off, slide it up over the filter then unscrew it and let it drop in the drum, you don’t get any oil all over the place, lot less cleaning up. When you put the new filter on, it is a good idea to partially fill it with oil so there is no chance of creating a dry spot getting pumped around until the filter fills up when you start the engine, bearings tend not to like dry spots, especially big end bearings. If you are coming out of the Med, try and plan to fill up with fuel at Gibraltar, it’s about 1/2 the price there as mainland Spain, it is expensive to dock there but there is a great marina very close called Alcaidesa Marina at La Linea. Good luck mate, you are doing great, have a safe passage and enjoy.

Please scrap that chain for the dingy lift. It will end up damaging the fibreglass or catching someone’s finger. You would be much better of using Spectra rope which is stronger, lighter and kinder on you and the tender. 3 strand Nylon would also be a better option and is simple to splice an eye in. Webbing is a 3rd option.

@@AwanuiNZ covering it with pipe will make it better but then it won’t bend which could be a problem particularly going over the transom. Time will tell…at least you won’t break it. You are showing great patients in sorting out all the little issues with the boat to I must say. I suspect there might have been some swearing off camera about the stabilisers😅. It highlights well why you don’t just set off straight across an ocean in a new boat but give it a good shakedown first. I love this worts and all approach in you videos.

That “Reverso” system is a god send. Once you have tried this over the conventional method, you will never go back. Was this an option that was offered or did this come standard with your boat ? Just a suggestion sir; get a white permanent marker and write the date and engine hours on the filter body when completing an oil change. I’m sure you make notes in the log but this is a quick reference for you when in the engine room. You can even add NEXT OIL CHANGE @ HOURS **** if you like. I love this boat so beautiful. I wondered about that single mooring buoy, normally there would be quite a few of them and marked on the chart as a mooring. That is a brutal ride sitting in the front of a skiff at that speed. 😂 Might be good to have a sturdy plastic bag to put around the oil filter when taking it loose so that it can catch all of that stray oil. Or maybe punch a hole through the filter before removing it so it can drain into a catch pan. Happy belated Birthday to Renee! Having stabilizers must be nice when they are working. By the way you might want to check your oil levels after you start the engine run them for a few minutes You might have to top it off because it's filling up all the oil channels in the filters and it's going to lower the level in the oil PAN and like I said if there's a compression release on that engine I would open it up and loud the engine just to turn over for a minute to be able to pressurize oil through the engine

I am fully aware that you will get teething troubles with any new car, boat, motorbike, etc. However, Turks are very good at producing something that looks beautiful but not so good on the small stuff. I speak from experience as we used to own three villas in Turkey. They don't use damp-proof courses when the water table is close to the surface. Walls had damp halfway up. Patio doors opened outwards but had security gates on the outside. Doors had four inch gaps at the bottom, and one place had to be underpinned before we even spent a night there. I had to enter the loft in one house, and the wooden roof trusses were basically tree branches! Turks are brilliant at telling you what they think you want to hear.

    • @AwanuiNZ
      @AwanuiNZ  4 місяці тому

Certainly a culture difference. From what I know one thing about the Turks is that they build good boats. It was great being at the factory for nearly three months and being welcomed the way I was. All I saw were craftsmen at work who were very proud of what they did. I agree on building houses though done pretty rough generally.
