Every time a merchant ship changes course it uses more fuel. The skippers are graded on going as straight as possible with no deviations (and use as little fuel as possible). While i understand the wake considerations, he was not too close - when you can toss a beer to them, then their close. You can always ask to have them slow down but they probably wont. It is the smaller boats you have to watch out for that are not run by professionals. (think general aviation pilots against commercial pilots - PS yes an i understand wake turbulence, grin). new subscriber!

Great video, Mark. my personal feeling is that you are too paranoid about lifejacket use. I've gone across the Pacific three times and never wore a life jacket. I did use a harness and safety line numerous times, but not a life jacket. I am always more concerned about falling in and being crushed between the boat and a piling than drowning. Never did fall in.

Love the videos, real life with a complex new yacht. It seems incomprehensible to me that Nordhavn quality control and checklist work pre-delivery didn't catch some of these major issues with the stabilizers and watermaker. Also astonishing that the stabilizer installers bolluxed the install -- they do this for a living, they have done hundreds of these installs. Now you have steering problems? It's enough to wonder if Nordhavn is really the top-tier yachtmaker they claim to be. Thanks for sharing -- your videos are informative and highly entertaining.

What a great slice of adventure - thanks for taking us along with you.
Hope you don't mind my usual comments!
My one suggestion for this episode - but I highly recommend it - is regarding departing a slip or face dock - like you are in the beginning of your video. When it's just you and your deckhand (wife in this case), it's really unadvisable to leave the helm when departing. However in reality I understand that's a tough ask. Here's a big tip...
Whenever possible, before starting up the boat and fully casting off, do this: shift the boat a few feet (fore or aft) as needed so that a midship's cleat is opposite (or slightly down current/wind) from a dock cleat. Then take a line from that midship cleat, run it around the dock cleat, and then back to the cleat on the boat. This is called a breast line. Make it short and snug, so that the boat is drawn up tight against the dock. This is done at your leisure just before departing. Then the two of you can cast off all other lines, keeping just this breast line attached (can be done with no one at helm). Once all other lines are cast off, the captain goes to the helm and the mate goes to the breast line (on the side deck on the boat), uncleats the line and pulls aboard. This allows the mate to be safely onboard, and the captain at the helm. At the same time the boat is securely snugged to the dock without the bow or stern able to swing at the whim of current or wind until the breast line is released.
Think it through - hope it makes sense - and let me know if it doesn't. Hoping you finally solve your stabilizer and watermaker issue! Teething pains indeed...
    Best,
    John

Absolutely and thank you for taking the time to offer great advice. Was not happy with that moment but as always we promised footage good and bad. We notice that most over here also use slip lines to eliminate the requirement of being on the dock. Love the idea of the midships line. I have been following a channel with a guys who travels on his own, he jumps off and on his boat all the time - in the right weather - agree not a good idea.

Super video!) It is better to turn on the cable first in the boat, and then to the shore! If you connect the shore power first, you are holding a voltage cable in your hands - it is not safe on the water.

“Adventures on the high seas with Mark and Fiona”…….what a trip and Fiona as a boater from long ago I totally get what you mean about feeling exhausted…the excitement of the trip itself, no stabilizers to hold you steady, only one engine for the moment and I always found the salt water, the sea air and the sunshine would make me so sleepy……thank you for showing us real life cruising. @@AwanuiNZ Yeah, was a joke - I know you were - B777? for air NZ? well, when you move towards west in the mediterranean, I can recommend the port of Porto Venere in Italy, on the outskirts of La Spezia. A very nice little port with mainly tourist from the daily cruise boats to and from la Cinque Terre. The dock itself is very small, but seems to have a lot of vacancies, at least right now. Saw Mermaid Six there on monday (Nordhaven 76), and the port will great you with many seaside restaurants, but if you want a good local meal i can recommend the "trattorio tre tori", it is not the cheapest place in town, but they serve a good meal in very cosy surroundings, and it is just off the main tourist flow of chaos..... looking forward to your next update - though you are still in Athens I believe - hope you get everything solved...

Understand you are going to the Saronic, so we will follow that very closely, have not been there ourselves, find out if we need to put it on the agenda.
As for running single engine, may want to check the gearbox manufacturer does not have a problem with that. Some gearboxes are not intended for windmilling for a prolonged period of time. Would be a pity if the stabilizers get fixed, but then the gear box develops a problem.

This is the BEST comedy series. The checklists are fine but shutting the doors rather than embracing that you're out in nature - really? Boating is all about relaxing and enjoying it. Fiona looks like a frightened rabbit the whole time. And the ferry passing goes the same route everyday ffs - would you expect a 747 to divert for a cessna?

    • @AwanuiNZ
      @AwanuiNZ  8 місяців тому +1

Yip I would it only takes a second and easily achieved. Fiona doing really well and getting more confident everyday. Certainly a big ask suggesting what is quite a challenging adventure. We close the lower Dutch doors but also have them wide open when we are comfortable. I suggest had we had them open all the time there would be comments also!

I think your videos are good because you show the everyday life and even with a fabulous boat like a Nordhavn, problems still exist. I am curious what is involved in having your boat detailed and the cost to have it done. It seems too new to need a detail.

Well you can say that but we have missed things when we have not used the checklist. In time we will now everything by heart but at the moment we are being very careful. The brain is pretty full at the moment so a list helps. As an aside you could well get an airplane away without a checklist too but you just don’t! Plenty of dumb boating accidents maybe taking a more careful airline style approach would help. Met a Cunard Captain who used to be a pilot but was made redundant. He introduced the checklist system into Cunard and it has been there ever since.
