- On this episode of "History Hunters" Jeff visits the Southern California neighborhood where Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed welcomed the Martini family to live -- away from Potter's rundown shanties -- in the movie, "It's a Wonderful Life." Jeff will explain where other parts of the movie was filmed in the summer of 1946.

I was walking with my dad and his dog in Corona Del Mar back in the 90's. He let his dog go and he ran up to a man sitting on the bench over the looking ocean. When walked up, it was Jimmy Stewart. My dad talked with him about WWII instead of movies and the conversation lasted for a good 20 mins. A memory I will never forget.

Donna Reed was absolutely stunning, I fall in love every time I watch the film.
If I owned that home no one would ever be able to come within 100 feet without me telling them that It's a Wonderful Life was filmed there and Donna Reed and Jimmy Stewart stood on my doorstep.
I love that movie and the lesson it teaches. Every person affects other people's lives. No matter how unimportant you might think you are, but to them you are a big deal.

I had the pleasure of meeting "Janie" (actress Carol Coombs), having gone to Bible College with her daughter. Her daughter had found out that "It's a Wonderful Life" was my favorite movie, and saw to it that I met her mother, on graduation night. It's was one of the kindest and thoughtful gestures anyone has done for me. I always think of our meeting, whenever I've watched the movie since.
What a treat! Jimmy Stewart is my favorite actor, as well! I never thought to visit the Martini house...I may have to take a trip!
Thanks for reminding us all of such a great movie. In real life Jimmie Stuart did indeed have a wonderful life. In WW2 he flew 20 combat missions and ended up the highest ranking actor in military history as a Brigadier general. He was the real deal. Merry Xmas to you and Sarah.

Two years ago Caltech had a showing of "Wonderful Life" to celebrate Frank Capra's 100th graduation anniversary. He could not make it as a chemist, got his first directing job in San Francisco that saved him from living on the street.

Great video. I love Jimmy Stewart, the era that my grandparents lived in, and the nostalgia. My dad used to be a solo residential builder in the midwest. We often ended up selling our home and moving into one of the new houses. I remember my childhood looking like that street where the Martini's moved in: flat, wide-open land, beautiful new, middle-class homes, not much landscaping nor any big shade trees (usually no trees, yet) - and as a result, the open, breezy, bright, sunny feel (both outdoors and indoors) looms large in my childhood memories.

This film is in my top 5 of all time. Might be the best ever.
I am a Realtor in the Los Angeles area and have been doing the very same ceremony that George and Mary Bailey do to welcome the Martini's to their new home, for my Clients for years, when I hand them their keys and they walk in the door for the first time as the homeowners. I have never seen anyone, but the Bailey's welcome someone to a home as a first time home buyer and it touched me way before I worked in Real Estate. When George says that he wished he'd never been born because he thinks his life has no meaning, that touched me on a profoundly deep personal level, because I see with my own eyes how owning your own home changes a life for the better. This is wonderful to know this special home still exists. A friend sent me this link Christmas week of 2021 and I also subscribed. I can't wait to see what other History you uncover!! Merry Christmas every day is the way life should be. Watched that movie many times. Growing up in the 1950s had it's good points but it was very hard too just like it was in the movie. I would never go back in time to those years. We have to count all the blessings we have today and not take them for granted.

It invariably leaves me in tears because I feel the message at a visceral level. The years go by so fast, it’s important not to miss the moments. I did not know Bailey Park actually existed, believed it to be a set. This was a joy to learn that some of the structures and locations in the movie were real.also have loved and admired Jimmy Stewart all my life.

Thank you for sharing this wonderful piece of film history. It's a wonderful life has been touching my heart and leaving a huge impact since I saw it the very first time. I cannot ever forget the extraordinary message that came with it - and I was 8 back then. I live in LA and have been visiting Donna Reed's gravesite a few times already. Now that I know the filming location was actually in SoCal too, I might try to get there and retrace it and it's memories step by step. Thank you Jeff and Sarah for researching all the very interesting information on this fine Jimmy Stewart film. Those houses are very old now. Glad to see the bugs haven't eaten them up yet. In my house I lived in at 3755 Myrtle Ave. Long Beach, CA in the 1960s and up to 1975, on warm summer evenings one could hear the termites munching behind the lath and plaster.
I am so glad I stumbled upon this video it's a wonderful Life is one of my favorite movies ever and the fact that I learned so much more about it with such interesting details is amazing 🤩

this was my brothers favourite film. he died 7 years ago but i always watch it on the anniversary of his death on the 4th december as a tribute to him. such a classic film and really interesting to see the oiginal locations many thanks

If the film has a fan club, I hope they will watch your video and then contact the neighborhood about placing a plaque on that corner or in front of the house. And wouldn't it be great if this street got together to coordinate a Christmas house lights show like other neighborhoods do? None of us started watching it until they started playing it on TV in 1974 when it's copywrite licenses expired. I was born in 1958 and never heard of it until the 1980s!

The only problem with this installment of Jeff Awesome, is I found out (by showing it to my wife), that she's never actually seen It's a Wonderful Life. I thought she was kidding me... since she loves old movies. How we've been together this long and I never knew... we'll be watching it together soon, I promise. Great work Jeff!!
This was another amazing video! I watch this movie every Christmas season along with Christmas Vacation. I used to work for a nationwide department store chain. I entered new clothing into our system and set up SKU #’s. I had a vendor in NYC on 34th Street. They told me they got calls asking if they had any miracles.

It’s a film I didn’t watch as a kid but is a totally enjoyable movie for me!
Merry Christmas to you folks also. I lived in the Crescenta Valley (La Crescenta) for 28 years and never knew that house existed. I guess living in L.A.-Hollywood and surrounding areas and seeing movies being made made all the time made me oblivious to what it would mean in the future. Now living in Ojai or Shangri La as it was called in a very famous movie I will be more aware of those things.
