When I was a kid we used to go up there every summer. We’d go camping, fishing and hiking over at Twin Lakes and we’d always go into Bodie and stop by Burger Barn for lunch.
Excelent video. Some years ago my wife and I broke an axle on our Bronco about a half mile past the end of the pavement on Bodie road. It was sunset and somehow got a cell call for a tow truck. Trucker said the nearest cell tower was in Bishop! Hours later we were in Bridgeport and stayed where you did but almost got a room at the old Bridgeport Hotel which was originally built in Bodie. The next day sitting in the cafe' we chatted with the seasonal Sherriff (most residents are seasonal) to hear some interesting facts, for one it's the only spot in California I know of that reaches -20 degrees in the winter. With highway 108 closed, few people go or even stay there. We later hired a local to take us about 100 miles to Carson City NV to rent a car and go home. It's a memory I'll never forget. You had a lot of detail in this video but the sheriff told us to come back- and we did, for the best old fashioned 4th of July parade you'll ever see in your life! Awesome little town!
Thanks for your compliments! Yeah the cold would disqualify Sarah from ever living there. She remembers what Minnesota was like as a child there! We appreciate you watching and commenting!
For several months many years ago, 395 was my weekly "commute" to a job in Los Angeles. It was already after sundown on one return trip at the end of October that year that my little car tried to wreck its engine on the approach to Bridgeport. I shifted into neutral and coasted to a stop on the shoulder on the curve into town. CHP was almost right behind me, though, and pulled off to see what was wrong, arranged a tow, delivered us (me and my car) to a gas station with a repair garage (closed for the night) at the other end of town, and suggested a motel. It was dark, cold, and late -- and I hadn't planned a stop -- so I got checked in and phoned my parents to let them know what happened to me and wouldn't be alarmed if they tried calling me at home and got no response. I decided to make the best of the situation, so I took a good steaming shower. As soon as I finished and got myself wrapped in a towel, the floor jerked under my feet and the wood paneling on the walls creaked. Then the floor jerked at a right angle to that and the paneling creaked again. And then the floor began rolling in waves, the paneling was popping like it was going to fall off the walls, and the wall-mount tv was bouncing like crazy. I wondered if I should try to brace it, but decided I should just stay where I was -- right in a door frame, which is supposed to be a pretty safe structure in an earthquake. The quake was epicentered over at Lee Vining and Richtered about 5. Nothing huge, but a whole lot of shaking. My parents didn't hear about the quake until the next morning, but I got a wake-up call from papa, asking: "Do you want fries with that shake?" Good fortune saw to it that the head mechanic at the gas station had previously worked at a Los-Angeles-area dealership for the same brand as my car and was completely familiar with the model and its idiosyncrasies, AND the NAPA store in town actually had the part that needed replacing in stock. It was a long wait with nothing to read, but I was back on the road by late afternoon and slept in my own bed that night.
Annie : I have such vivid memories of being there many times in the early 1960's. Our family would camp at Twin Lakes and fish there and at the Bridgeport Reservoir. So surprised to see Ken's Sporting Goods store still up and running. I recall the 4th of July celebrations which always included a parade, Indian dances and the "greased pole climbing contest". Atop The pole was a $10.00 bill - a lot of money to a youngster then. I still have the 8mm movies my father shot from those days. Wonderful memories!
My crew and I shot the 4th of July fireworks for Bridgeport for two years in a row. My contact person was Linda at the Jollycone and a delight to work with as was everyone in town. Good memories!
It's amazing to me that the schoolhouse was in use until 1964 and I am very appreciative of those that fight to preserve the history of their towns. This was another incredibly entertaining episode.
My Nana lives in a converted school house. It was from the late 1800’s and also closed in 1964. The farmer across from her school house went to that school. The outhouse is still up as well! I love going there because it’s like touching history. In the outhouse there’s graffiti from when the first school kids were there! I just love it.
Good old Hollywood always doing trickery! You'd be surprised how much that occurs. I prefer the old keys to hotels rather than the cards. They are reliable. Love the old cemetery. It really looks like an old western cemetery out of the old west in movies.
For sure in all accounts. I was happy to see the metal key because the cards are aggravating when they fail. Thanks buddy for watching! You have been my mentor for years!
I really enjoyed this one!! Thank you for doing what you two do!!! Being housebound ...really Bad knees ...you get me OUT once a week!!!!, i love history!!
Thank you so much for the tour of Bridgeport. That I was going there since 1962 with my parents. They finally bought a house there and my mother was in the graveyard. You were filming once again. Thanks for bringing back all the memories. They were all good

Back in the 80\90s my husband and I traveled based on a book called "Off the Beaten Path". HWY 395 was our major road in CA to reach a lot of hidden spots. Your series has brought back some wonderful memories, much appreciated as I lay with a broken leg. Thank you for your time and effort in putting together "History Hunters".
If there's a more beautiful, history-filled stretch of roadway anywhere on earth as rich and colorful as US 395, I don't know where it could possibly be.
When our son passed in 2021 my wife and I needed to just get out the way. We came to Bridgeport. The folks were so nice and we just walked roads off 395 looking at mountains. We felt good there. Very cool place❤
That's so nice to hear! So sorry to learn of your son's death. I cannot imagine what you've been through. My heartfelt sympathies to you and your wife.
I've driven through and stopped at Bridgeport many times. 395 is a beautiful drive all up and down the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevada mountains. And Out of the Past might just be my favorite Noir movie of all time. Thanks for this video.

I went through Bridgeport, once. Some women I met at the Mammoth Lakes youth hostels took me hot spring hunting, and one of our stops was at Travertine hot springs, right outside of town. It was a really neat experience!
Spent a lot of nights with my transfer parked behind the Bridgeport Inn in the 90's . Did a lot of paving and shoulder backing in the area and a few loads of drain rock for the new restrooms in Bodie. Was like a working vacation every time I had the opportunity to work for Jeff and Cathy from Construction Specialties. Good memories..........
I love Bridgeport. We have camped at twin Lakes probably for 40 years. We spent about two weeks there and then one year. Jeff sitting in Bridgeport as we speak. October 8, 2020. Actual watched your show in the car in town. Great story. We have been here several times and seen some of it but you have given us things we had no idea. Here until end of month and will.look at the buildings and cemetery, didn't even know it was here. Always enjoy your shows. Can see you spend alot of time researching. Thanks again Larry Miller San Diego ca.
Thank you Larry. That’s pretty amazing that you’re there right now. The cemetery is off the beaten path a little ways but it’s worth going to. Just stay away from that rip off Shell station. LOL
Oh! You missed the Travertine Hot Springs on the edge of town. Great place for a relaxing hot dip! I wonder why they painted that beautiful old brick? Real keys at the Lodge? Well if it ain't broke don't fix it LOL

Thanks for this! My Grandpa and Grandma on my Father's side used to travel between Bridgeport Reservoir and Bullhead City AZ. I have many memories of this town and the surrounding areas.
Please tell more stories like the one at the end of the video. People need to hear what it was like in the past when law and order weren't enforced. Loved seeing all the original building.
Have you thought of doing a video on the st Francis dam disaster. I think it would be cool to do a series with talking about the victims, graves, what life was like back then, the small camps near the dam and how it impacted the state. I can go on but you tell stories so well and you can tell that you really do your homework.
Another wonderful video!! The town was lovely. The history information was the best !! I enjoyed the many stories about the town and its people. We are looking forward to your next video 🤩🤩
I love Bridgeport. It seems like it has not changed in the last 60 years as we ours drive through it about every 2 years. I always thought it would be an ideal place to live. Lots of fishing, hunting and exploring.
Any where in this great area is wonderful and is like heaven at least u'r closer to heaven without being in heaven. As kids our family spent a few weeks in high Sierra every year. What a blessing that was and I passed on to my wonderful wife.last few months of her shorten life all she wanted was to spend it in the High Sierra's, mammoth lake's. Oh we honey mooned in June lake's.
We passed by that facility coming and going! My mom used to remark about the Marines and get all excited to see them out training. Sarah and I didn't see a soul this last summer when we passed by! Thanks for watching!
Was there in September of 2019. Power was out to ALL of Mono County for about a week, due to a "High Wind Event". Really enjoyed staying in the area for the week. I will be digging more into the history next visit. Bridgeport and Bodie should be on everyone's to do list.
Believe me, I was up 250 miles away and we were shut off ...but we had been forgotten x 3 weeks, due to the LNU and the Glass Fires. They literally forgot our area, leading to no cellular signal and lack of evacuation warnings.
Nice little town to decompress. Ironically, the movie From out of the Past is on Noir Films tonight and I watched a good portion of it. Recognized the gas station and the character there.
To bad the museum was closed. It is one of my favorites. It has so much cool historic artifacts. I remember being impressed with the guns on display. Nice job.
Great video, I’ve been there and it a wonderful stop to see those old buildings and that sporting goods store. A little south towards Nevada is Benton and I remember seeing historical places there.
When I was in the California national guard we use to fly up that way to Pickle Meadows witch is a USMC training center near there. We rent a car and go into town have dinner. Great lovely town full of history
Driven through there many times on the way to Southern California from northern Nevada. We’ve never stopped. Might stop to check that open air museum. Great video. Thanks.
We stayed one night in Bridgeport last summer. It is a neat little town. We look forward to staying there again in the future on our way to or from Lake Tahoe.
the last 20 years of the 1800's are rarely known, but through you guys we know a lot more, the industrial age began right during the end of the civil war, begging with the Winchester riffle, and on into the last 20 yrs of the 1800's,and on into the turn of the century, wonderful blend of history, and movie triva.my dads side of the family is named "Bryant",but i don't think there is any realation.my das side come from the eastern part of the U.S.
That's such a beautiful small town. I stayed down the road at the Virginia Creek Settlement a few years ago. I love everything about it. Little to no traffic, no giant corporations out here and you're surrounded by scenic mountains
My home since 2004. I retired from the Mono County Sheriff's Office in 2018. Great town to call home.
Thanks for your service, sir! We support our law enforcement officers!

California has many beautiful areas! This is one of them! Thanks Nadia for complimenting our episode!
History Hunters Because I always enjoy them.
Please tell more stories like the one at the end of the video. People need to hear what it was like in the past when law and order weren't enforced. Loved seeing all the original building.
And I thought the story would be long for most! We will try to tell the stories when we find them. That was a horrible series of events.
Have you thought of doing a video on the st Francis dam disaster. I think it would be cool to do a series with talking about the victims, graves, what life was like back then, the small camps near the dam and how it impacted the state. I can go on but you tell stories so well and you can tell that you really do your homework.
One of my families favorite places to visit.
Another wonderful video!! The town was lovely. The history information was the best !! I enjoyed the many stories about the town and its people. We are looking forward to your next video 🤩🤩
Glad you enjoyed it! We appreciate you watching and commenting! They truly encourage us! Jeff & Sarah
I love Bridgeport. It seems like it has not changed in the last 60 years as we ours drive through it about every 2 years. I always thought it would be an ideal place to live. Lots of fishing, hunting and exploring.
Yeah it's like I commented in the video ... Bridgeport seems like it's stuck in time! We appreciate you watching and commenting! Thank you!
Dress warm!
Been there many times never knew the history and tell your video thank you so much
Glad you enjoyed it. Thank you! We appreciate you watching and commenting!
Love the old towns. So much history
Did my cold weather combat training in Bridgeport when in the Marines. It wasn't as romantic an adventure as this fine video.
Very cool! We appreciate you watching and commenting!
What a coincidence! That’s amazing. I actually had not watched it until I bought it after visiting Bridgeport!
So interesting !! Thank you !
Thank you very much! I’m glad you liked it!

When I was in the California national guard we use to fly up that way to Pickle Meadows witch is a USMC training center near there. We rent a car and go into town have dinner. Great lovely town full of history

My parents used to take us camping in Bridgeport about every year when I was a kid. Beautiful area
Driven through there many times on the way to Southern California from northern Nevada. We’ve never stopped. Might stop to check that open air museum. Great video. Thanks.
You should! Have fun if you do stop! We appreciate you watching and commenting!
We stayed one night in Bridgeport last summer. It is a neat little town. We look forward to staying there again in the future on our way to or from Lake Tahoe.

I first saw this town in 1988, when I was a young Marine stationed at MCMWTC. We still go there at least once a year.
I love Small Town History. Thanks.
Thank you so much!
Charming little town.
Many people in my family in the past worked at Allis-Chalmers. Fabulous to see a machine they may well have worked on.
It's a beautiful town ❤️
Hey what a nice peaceful town . Love old historical places ! Great vlog as always keep up the great vlogs guys! Deborah. Winnipeg. Canada
That's such a beautiful small town. I stayed down the road at the Virginia Creek Settlement a few years ago. I love everything about it. Little to no traffic, no giant corporations out here and you're surrounded by scenic mountains
I think we saw Virginia Creek. Isn't that south on the way to Bodie? We appreciate you watching and commenting!
@@jbenziggy yes it's the sky blue building on the 395
