98-99-2000-2001-2002-2003 is the best looking R1 i really like them more than new models

Been restoring a parted out 99 R1. Finding parts. Taken a lot of time and it came back to life after doing a valve job to restore compression and replacing the entire wiring harness, spark plugs and caps and pick up, battery and switches to have it have spark. It's been in the shop for months, but confident it will be road worthy again. The bike looks identical to yours

Great sounds similar to the work iv done to my FJ12. The R1 seems to be so healthy but in spring time Im gonna put some fresh bits on

Love the first Gen R1, my track bike is a 1998 R1 and it’s still a very competitive Bike.

Thank you for the video. I just got the 2000 model red/black/white. I also own the blue one but absolutely love the color scheme of your 99. I will do videos with both. Hope you do more videos to enrich these fantastic historic bikes.

I remember back in the day owners of these felt it was a must to have steering damper.

Hi mate that's a great review, agree with everything you said. I've got the same red '99 bike which I've owned for a decade and I still use it as much as I can (2-3k miles a year) - like yours its not perfect but very well cared for (DIY by me, always worked on my own bikes since 16 year old right as far as full engine strip-downs on some bikes but this one hasn't needed it - even the valve clearances were spot on when I checked them at 28k). Spot on advice about amassing parts while you can....I've got very nearly a full spare set of bodywork, even got a spare tank and of course a good condition stock exhaust can (which I actually used for several years...took it off to preserve it). In addition to the usual braided brake lines, some signature things on mine which in my view massively improved the bike - KTech fork internals with springs to my weight and a Nitron Rear NTR R1 rear shock, both tweaked and set up for fast B road riding. As I'm knocking on the door of 50, I've also just recently swapped out the handlebars for 'helibars' - which raise the position and put the bars slightly closer to the rider about an inch and a half each and are half an inch wider. Have to say I was skeptical at first but they are awesome - visually, you can't tell any difference at all as its all done on angles rather than using unsightly raisers like some, but that little bit goes a long way in terms of wrist comfort etc (I know you said you don't find any bother with it stock....I didn't when going fast but am SO pleased I've changed them now!!) Expensive but great bits of kit, no detriment to handling at all and unlike the fixed stock bars you have a little bit of leeway to rotate the helis forward or back to further suit preference. Like yours mine is running very very well and hope it continues to do. Next item up I think will probably be to the replace the original coolant hoses (although they don't seem too bad right now to be fair, surely they must be on borrowed time!!). Will probably get a Samco silicone set as originals are now unobtanium. Thanks for posting! Oh - totally agree about being able to blow the doors off most cars *still*!! with a 23 year old bike. Late 90's early 2000s really was the Golden Era of sports bikes in my mind...no electronic nannies but the bikes were fast, handled well and were reliable.

Thats great yes Ive got an original can also and foot controls set. Im looking for the rear plastic for the number plate. Mine like 99% of them has been cut off. Been using mine a lot lately in the cold it never complains and does every job a motorcycle can do with no hesitancy. I bought a set of coolant hoses but have not fiitted them yet

Great review. I've had 2 1999 R1's over the years and I'm tempted to buy another. You're right about being faster than 99.9% cars on the road, I just sold my DC5 Type R Integra and I wouldn't consider a fast sports car when an R1 will just annihilate most cars.

I need rings done on mine. Local dealership/shop doesn’t want to work on it due to its age. The new ones are nice but I love my ‘99. Wish I could find someone local who knew what they’re doing, I don’t have the tools or facilities to do it myself. 😔

Nice classic! I’d give this a little restoration, then stick it in my garage. A nice display piece. Then go out and get a modern R1.

Good review, I've had both the early R1 and an FJ . You might revise your view of the FJ a little as it's a mid 80s design a few generations away from the R1.

For the dull LED lights on the dash. There's an online store called ultra bright LED's. I did ever light on the dash of my CBR600f. Huge difference. Not expensive either.

I'm in the market for a cheap tidy bike, these are on my list. Want something fun not too difficult to maintain and enjoy..what we thinking one of these or a later injection model.
    These are about 500/1000 cheaper

It may have been Built in 96, but it was Designed in like 86. And its also more of a Sport/Touring Bike. Waaayyy heavier.

You are lucky the brakes are good. I got a 1999 R1 and the brakes aren't great worse bike brakes I have had. Changed the pads disc etc no joy. My CBR 98 will stop far quicker. Saving for a brembo upgrade in the summer

    • @christianrasmussen6739

Sound like there's something wrong with your brakes, does the lever feel sponghy or does it feel like there's no bite from the pads, also when was the brake fluid changed last time

    • @b6eunos

Something isn't right, the 2 R1's I've had didn't have this issue and they were as capable as more modern bike calipers

i follow alot of japanese bike youtubers and i have noticed they mostly ride 250s. is it just for licensing/tax reasons?

I guess so. At night I seem to be the only grown adult out on a bike. On the only 1000cc Iv seen also. Its mostly teenagers and early 20s guys on 250s and 400s that go out as often as me.

Peel off the seat cover and cut the foam about halfway through then recover its much better. If you don't want to do this just take your seat off and put a folded towel on top of your battery area and see what it feels like. You sit lower in the bike and not on top.all r1 people will thank me and you are welcome. God speed
