Great Review. I just picked up a 2003 R1 from a friend of mine here in Ontario, Canada. The bike is in mint condition minus a couple of small scratches on one of the lower fairings. I just purchased it for incredible steal at $1500.00 Canadian. Before I purchased it I asked the owner how many km. He was unsure as the battery was completely dead but he said it was low. I put a new battery in, turned the key on and saw that it only had 964km on it. Yes, 964. It still has the original tires which look like new but are being ditched because of the age. The opening of the gas tank cap was pretty rusty, but it cleaned up ok. I dumped the gas, filled it and it fired right up. Changed the oil and antifreeze, cleaned and lubed the chain and took it for a quick ride. Unbelievable power throughout the full rpm range. The colour is Liquid Silver and has a brand new Yoshimura slip on in stainless as well. Best pourchase I ever made. The owner was happy to get rid of it as he hasn't rode the bike in years.

In 03 I couldn't get my hands on an R1 because every dealership was sold out. I did however get a Gsxr1000 (my first streetbike) which was also completely mind-blowing. You said it, it's crazy how times have changed. Disappointing to me. 20+ yrs later I'm still addicted to that top end rush and adrenaline and the proud owner of an S1000RR and and a Bandit 1250. Thank you for this flash to the past. It's been an honor to have been here when Japanese engineering was at its finest and to experience the evolution of sheer bliss on 2 wheels 👍

I purchased the 2002 R1 (which is the exact same bike as the 2003) in 2017 from its original owner with only 18K mi. and have done quite a bit of mods including replacing the clip-ons with an Apex 5 Inch high handlebars which greatly improved the handling. I give it the respect that it commands and as a result I have never dropped it. I love the scholarly treatment you give the review of it. You should really have thousands more subscribers and many thousands more views. Keep it up. Subscribed.

@@NeilTaylor-u1i it was perfect. You actually had to ride the bike and know how to handle it. No rider aides like traction control or ABS.

The 03 is lighter than the 04-06. I believe the wet weight is 439lbs and the 04-06 is around 448-450lbs wet. I remember people did complain about the wet increase in 04

I purchased my 2003 R1 limited edition black with red flame new off the showroom floor. We've been flying since! Here comes the bold statement! Fastest "documented" Yamaha R1 ever! 239.298 mph / 385.112 kmh. Show me the timeslip!

@@TheSigmaQueen OH that is with a turbo! GT2860R Garrett. We hopefully will be heading to Bonneville this September for the USFRA's World of Speed.
Lots of engine mods, too much to list.

I have a 03 r1 and it is definitely a experience to ride this bike I have had zx10s and cbr1000rr and I tell you for a 21 year old bike it is a animal the power delivery is from start to finish unlike the zx10 the power band starts around 6 7 sometimes 8 thousand rpm the 03 r1 I have starts at 4 and goes all the way to 11 thousand like you said it’s not big on getting the front wheel off the ground but I like that because it’s better to take most leader bikes to gap town I smoked a 2018 cbr1000rr and I had a passenger from start to finish and then a 50mph pull it just didn’t have it and I have had the top speed to 196mph yes I got a little work done but nothing crazy but all and all I love it it’s definitely what I was looking for and some so for $3500 and about another $2000 putting into it tires and full tune up full blue titanium exhaust and rear sprocket stator rectifier and some more little things it’s a absolute animal and will still run with or gap new modern super bikes….

Fantastic review bro! Your English is excellent! It's a bit unusual as most Italians speak like Rossi, Iannone, or Domenicali..
The R1 had been modified tastefully and it does look and sound better than a factory version.
I hope that you do some more old school super bike tests in the future..
    Keep them coming!
    Regards from Australia

With no assists!! You get to dabble in the black magic known as throttle control.
I'm not a pro I will eventually get my knee down.
Bought my first sport bike last year and it's completely different to anything i rode before it.
Its pure raw and wants to kill you I absolutely love it 🤣🤣

The ai translation is crazy. The thing that gave it away was your mouth trembling in a weird way. Scary.

I was first blown away by its looks and then by its raw electronics free power. Not to take anything away from the current crop of super bikes but I’ve owned this bike for over nine years now and the hairs on my neck still stand on ends whenever I start it, let only ride it! I once tried to trade it in on a newer bike and at the last minute changed my mind. Never regretted it. Awesome handling and awesome looks. It has the best looking tail section of any pass or current litre bike. Believe this or not but I once owned a 2005 CBR 1000rr. Rode it for a couple years and then traded it in for my 03 R1. I can go on about this bike but enough said.
