Beautiful bike! I prefer the red and white myself but the blue is a timeless classic.

They came during an era of fast fall in new bike costs, I got my 2000 version for 6.5K new which was also easy to get cheap finance for. The only thing holding people back was the ever present issue of insurance costs. We didn't understand at the time but it was a golden era for bikers.

R1 and 998/916 were among the most beautiful supersport bikes of the 90s. Got this R1 myself in Red Bull look. Also liked the FZR1000 from 91-93 and the first CBR900s a lot.

You’ll want to look after the headstock bearings from wheelies-it will beat the bearing pocket oval and you’ll end up with a clicking feeling that can’t be cured by tightening the bearings on the steering stem. IMO this is a lot of the reason they tank slap.

Your temperature doesn’t sound to bad. It’s just a bit higher. Maybe the fins on the radiator are a bit damaged so it’s not getting maximum cooling from it.

@@itchingtoride where are you? And what’s the mileage/price?
When I found my current 04 which is absolutely mint the seller also had a 98 and another buyer beat me to it. I was going to buy both. This guy listed 2 absolutely showroom mint stock low mileage R1 at the same time 98 had 3,500 miles 04 had 715 miles 4500 each. It was a race to get there first. I immediately messaged him when they were listed and was the number 2 in line. The first guy almost bought both. So glad he didn’t cause I ended up with a basically brand new 04 R1. Currently now have 10,000 miles on it. Best bike I’ve ever owned. Turns so well.
