Throw in a digital dash and light upgrades too. This car appeals to pcp/hp/lease buyers. Dropping 45 cold ones on this 4 banger doesn't make sense. I love Alpine etc but these cars are a hard sell in EU. If I had the money id get a Cayman used 35k for short term ownership on pcp. I can see this depreciating a lot more than the 3.0
I'm confused. you say the 3.0 is more to tax? Its not, the 2.0 and 3.0 cost exactly the same to tax per year (over £500). I'd rather get the GR86. Better handling car, nearly as quick as the 2.0 and cheaper to run (£190 a year to tax & lower insurance).
The only reason to get the 2.0 is for lower car tax for everyone else save up more money and get the 3.0 or buy one second hand for the same price as a new 2.0. It's always been the case that the more powerful version isn't really that much more uneconomical than the lesser engine. Another interesting point is since Toyota have access to 2.0 engines why use BMW's power plant?
I guess you have no clue about engineering, to build a car there is so much stuff to consider and actually the costs to implement an engine to a platform, on which it wasnt developed is nearly immpossible for an OEM. You can do it for testing purposes kinda easily, but to sell them it will be a complete nightmare.
@@Trochanus Well I ain't an engineer so yeah no clue but saying that I forgot the fact that the Supra is built on the Z4 platform so yeah what you say makes sense and hence the reason why they stuck with BMW engines for both versions. Love your reviews as to this one I must say that comparing the supra or even mentioning its name side by side to the Porsche cayman is such a not deserving insult to the cayman
Simply embarrassing, Toyota, number one car manufacturer borrowed an engine from another manufacturer for continuing a legendary legacy. It's mind-blowing, I will never understand this.
The reason you'll never understand it is because you're not thinking logical. You are being emotional. The Supra name that everyone praises was always a bad business decision. If folks had bought the MK4 model in record numbers and profits we would've had a MK5/MK6 since 1998. A business has to do what's financially best for them but the emotional seem to not understand this point at all.
IMO The 3.0 is for performance, and the 2.0 is a cheaper package ready for engine swappers and posers who want the looks. The 2.0 is almost trying to compete with Toyota's own GT86 (soon GR86) but with more weight and no manual option. And yes, the complaint of the GT86 is the NA power levels, but people don't understand that Toyota have left it to the tuning shops to provide the forced induction. The GT86 is a well balanced base car to be built up in to an individuals requirement, whether that is NA, turbo or supercharger. The 2.0 Supra doesn't have the same vibe to it.
This 2.0 is perfect for somebody who already have a sedan or SUV at home. The perfect second car. Low tax & low maintenance for a sports car. It's looks different , the A45 , Golf R ect are too common.
Not everybody buys the car for the engine. Most of us buys the car because of the look and affordability. For example, I absolutely love the design of the RS5 compared to the base model (pretty basic), but it is way too expensive for what it is and probably way too crazy for normal everyday driving.
I am not liking this car. It won't be a volume seller. I am more excited over the Yaris than this. If the 400z comes to market, 400hp, three pedals and cheaper. I say no more. Toyota drop the ball on this one.

Ok, the 3 litre has no 382hp. It has 340hp, even in newer versions it doesn't have 382hp. And to be more precise, that 2 litre B48 is more similar to the 30i versions found in the 3 series or the Z4. The one in the M135i has different turbos, more power and is built across, not lengthwise. Soundwise, you always need to engage the Sport mode combined with the DTC limited traction mode. For some reason BMWs and everything related to them only then reveal their full sound.

Its just that some countries make certain types of tuning illegal. ie power hikes or changing the car radically.

There is nothing those two cars share apar from the number of cylinders
loool.....ive never seen the new Supra on the road mate. The dealers sold a negligible amount in the UK. Explains why Nissan wont bring the new one here. So ill be importing it once its tanked in Japan.
I actually owned the 86 and now own a 2.0 Supra and the Supra feels like a turbocharged 86 but with a bit of refinement everywhere so it isn't as raw but I love em both.
I think it's target market is countries like my country where the price difference is 100k.
Wow great review!
exact same engine & power output as my G20 330i 😂
Bmw is THE best buddie
When are we gonna get reviews on the new BMW Z4s?
this is it lol
I reckon if they put in the new gr Yaris engine with the 6speed this would be insane, would be so light
how should this fit?
Hi Rory I think this is good car 0.60 in 5.3 secs is not exactly slow good test though
My Camry v6 XSE accelerated just as fast and its a sedan
for those chasing numbers it is. For most real enthusiasts numbers dont matter. Handling, engagement, fun factor matters more. Explains why the mx-5 sold 33,000 per year. Being cheaper helps but fun factor matters
Each to their own. Give me £45,000. Ill build my brothers 2jZ Supra to 800 - 1000hp with manual conversion and still have around £15,000 left to buy a used 86 .......or 370Z to daily 😂😂. I can see this depreciating a lot more than the 3.0
The car looks amazing, thats a lovely color
Another great video 😊❤👍
To me £9k down off the 3.0 is not enough. It's still £46K, if it was around £38k to £40k, then it might be worth it??
41k with dealer discount. For this 45k i bet that new Z will be worth it lol
The ferrari of Uni students😁
Unless you’re at Regent’s, where they drive real Ferraris
All that space might be great for dumping a fat turbo on it to make a drift car without all the weight, no?
I'm confused. you say the 3.0 is more to tax? Its not, the 2.0 and 3.0 cost exactly the same to tax per year (over £500). I'd rather get the GR86. Better handling car, nearly as quick as the 2.0 and cheaper to run (£190 a year to tax & lower insurance).
personally I would use the extra space in the hood to put a bigger turbo
Which isn't a big deals since both of these BMW engines are very good!
Love your reviews as to this one I must say that comparing the supra or even mentioning its name side by side to the Porsche cayman is such a not deserving insult to the cayman
They should have made the 2.0 a manual only, would give people a decent differentiator between the two.
Spot of Litchfield magic required
They should have made supra 2.0 with manual gearbox
*Diesel Supra releasing in 2022* 😂😂😂😂
Lol
🤦🏾♂️🤦🏾♂️
I didn't even know the new supra was on the market. I have never seen any of them on the road.
Its a under performed Toyota 2.0L. But can it be improved with modification? I'm sure it can be done
Simply embarrassing, Toyota, number one car manufacturer borrowed an engine from another manufacturer for continuing a legendary legacy. It's mind-blowing, I will never understand this.
Price mainly.
Rory reviewing cars is so inclusive and attention arresting. I honestly feel like I am in the passenger seat.
So are they going to sell any? Surely they did their research?
ive never seen one on the road
Toyota drop the ball on this one.
yup...400 will be import only...im sure from 2030 import laws will change for new ice cars
Explain to me why would they use a bmw 4cylinder and not a Toyota one?
because Toyota engines are only good for economy cars like Corollas.
Reliability over performance for a Toyota 4 cylinder
@@nixxen9359 reliability doesn't matter to most people who get new cars since they won't keep them long term and have a warranty or just lease. There's a reason why no car reviewer talks about reliability.
@@kristians2704 fair enough, however I’m in the mindset where when I buy a new car. I plan to keep it for at least 3-5 years and we are talking brand new here
Toyota could tune a Camry 4 cylinder just as well or even better than lotus can! Come again not a good reason!
if priced right Nissan 400Z will become what new Supra was supposed to be
it should be around 45k in Japan depreciating within the first year. So might be able to import one after 12-18 months at 35k excluding sva, conversion and shipping
What are you talking about dumb dumb, these are 382+ on the Dyno. When you're old enough to drive you can talk cars.
not in UK yet...in US yes theyre 382 on paper and around 395-405 Dyno
@@blademanx Oh, does the GPF version kill so much power? Gosh, what a world.
So , u get a 9k cheaper but still a still good looking car, drop the 9k into an 2j swap or any engine of ypur choice and you will get the looks and hilarious hp . Have fun guys .
You’re complaining about the engine sitting so far back, ever heard of weight distribution?
Why would you get this over a turbo GT86?
new 86 wont come with turbo...just a 2.4 boxer. But a supercharged or turboed gt86....no brainer plus manual
@@blademanx Thank you. I'm a little rusty on that particular car. Last I heard it was to be turbocharged, which has clearly been changed.
sorry bro. but this Car is not built for Europe this Car is built for North America and for Tuning, USA MSRP 43k $ ( pounds 31k ).
We don’t tune in Europe?
@@AutoTraderTV yes we tune cars also but here it´s very expensive and with the TÜV ( Technical Control Board ) it´s not easy in Europe.
The Nissan Z is built for USA. The fact we got the 370Z was by chance. 400Z presentation said it all. 1,000,000 Z sold in North America since 1972. The focus was on North American owners club who asked for the new Z. Im a member on the Z UK forum and lets be honest enthusiasm wasnt great compared to America. There was a lot of doubt and negativity. Also UK market is biased towards German cars anyway. Im suprised Toyota continue to try sell this car in EU. Nissan may only bring the new GTR to EU if they feel like it. Theres not much demand. US is a different story. The numbers dont lie. We tune in Europe. Its just that some countries make certain types of tuning illegal. ie power hikes or changing the car radically.
@@blademanx I think that the new 2022 Nissan Z come not to Europe.
The 3.0 Supra isn't available to buy new in Italy anymore.
lool probably because it didnt sell well
So a Celica?
Hate german cars so am confused a little bit with bmw supra, should i like it or not? 😅
Probably would be alot more fun if it had a manual option. Doesnt quite cut the mustard for the price range
A stick version would be slower. They should make a stick version of the 3.0 for less.
Actually, it’s not slower in the real world, because you can trust the car more in the corners, by virtue of controlling the torque with your gears.
A DCT out shifts a manual, unless your a career race car driver. Powering out of a turn is sweet but most peeps will enjoy shifting on straights and merging on to a highway, which, with more hps is more engaging.
@@stevenr6279 slower by a car length....whos watching that...lol...if you want straight line speed get another car...the real enthusiasts dont cry over numbers lol...they rather have engagement and fun and accelerate at 6 seconds than pay extra for a less engaging faster 4.5 seconds car. I notice ppl saying they found rs5 rs3 fast but boring....not suprised
@@christianabandabella235 they found the manual m2 gearing to be better than the DCT on one bmw blog.
Im not a fan of popping and cracking noise in little engines. Sounds like a car needs a tune up to me. The 6 cylinder Supra sound much better.
Here’s my issue. It’s to close to the 3.0 in price. 8k and you’re getting the fully fledged monster at 49k. This should be 10k cheaper. At 39k this is the best option.
Fuck yall “but you can negotiate with dealers” bs. They’ll change you more in interest and find the difference somewhere.
I am not sure why less performance is always looked down upon. We should celebrate the variety where some people want to cruise around and a 2L turbo is adequate. Chill guys..
Facts. This is why many "sports car" enthusiasts buy Miatas. There is an insane horsepower war going on today that, in reality, take away from the driving experience. I want to be able to take my car to the redline in multiple gears without going 150mph. 0-60 times and track launch capability is such a poor metric for driving enjoyment.
@@prasad530 but this is only a 4 popper, if it were the same engine but without turbos It would be a different story.
@@prasad530 that 0-60 metric is for simpletons who dont understand what a 'sports' car is really about.
It’s actually a BMW Z4 which is why it’s got a 2.0 liter engine like a Z4 your buying a BMW with a Toyota badge.
Why don’t they put this engine in the gt86?!
Because the centre of gravity is so high, the engine in the GT86 is ankle high because it's a boxer, that's why it drives better than this.
Should've used a tuned 2AR. 🤷🏽♂️
Finally a honest review. In short, it looks like a sports car and drives like a Prius. It would be better if they have made a hybrid or electric version but Japanese companies don't like to make too much money.
Drives like a Prius? What did you smoke...
There's nothing premium about a 4 popper
bruh my 2,0 does 0-60 in 3.2 seconds who ever buys a supra without modding still doesnt have an actual supra
Is it completely lost on you that this is a front mid-engined car, and that's why it's so far back? How do you review cars for a living?
Not bad I love it
Love it even 2.0 is ok with me
Always lowed the supra, from the first generarion onwards, buuut back in days they were ahead: 2 variable turbines, more hp, same for nismo 300zx...but this, way to much money, when you have these days all these sport hothatches, amgs or m3s a bit used same money but more of a car...
F1 engines look small. The LFA engines sit far back inside the engine bay.
