    What I do when I need to torque down a strut bolt: grab some wisegrip and some old cloth and compress the strut just below the top mount so it won't spin while you tighten the bolt. And this way you can also use 17mm head

    Do you have to replace the rear bump stops and brackets when replacing rear shocks even though they may look good? I have a 11 Jetta TDI..

      @wellingtonviking  Рік тому +1

      No, you don't. Mine were original and about 20 years old, and looked rough. I also had that clunking noise, so I was happy to replace everything. 20 years was a good stint.

      @@wellingtonviking How many times did you reuse the mounting brackets and bump stops?

    • @wellingtonviking
      @wellingtonviking  Рік тому +1

      @@hardcore4476 I believe the previous owner replaced the shocks once, but the bump stops and mounting brackets were original. 20 years old with about 160k miles on them when I replaced them.

      My car is 12 years old and original struts and shocks. I think I have a rattle on front strut mounts but not the rear.

      @@hardcore4476 if you can live with the noise and it goes down the road safely, she'll be right. Mine made the noise for years before I decided to tackle the project. It was much nicer without the noise after it was fixed.

    Save your PB Blaster. Spraying the head of the bolt does nothing.
    Spray the threaded part of the bolt only.
    A little anti seize on the threads going back together makes the next replacement a breeze.
    Other than that, good video.

    I'm having a hard time getting one of mine to stay tight. I'm about ready to lock tite it. Not like the shock mounts are super expensive. By the time I need new shocks again it will be time to replace the mount again anyway.

      @wellingtonviking  Рік тому

      It seems like they should have figured this out with how long the parts have been available. Did the locktite work for you? The shock mount bolt is what isn't staying tight for you? I'd locktite that too if that's the issue you're having.

      @@wellingtonviking I haven't gotten to it yet, working...but yes it's the top shock nut that keeps working loose but only on the passenger side. If it doesn't rain or storm today or tomorrow I'll probably do it right quick...it only takes me about 20 minutes...especially since I don't have any rust to contend with...Tennessee.

      @@gregcrabb3497 Good call. Hopefully the locktite does the trick. No rust is a thing of beauty.

      A good trick I learned from guy on UA-cam MikeFngarage uses Versachem mega black silicone on threads and let’s dry before installation especially on rattling diesels and said he’s never had tty used bolts never come loose or fail. So try that if comes loose again or on bolts in the future.
