Keep in mind, we're referring to these engines in the lighter MK1, MK2, and MK3 platforms. For example a 1.8t feels completely different in the lighter platforms compared to the MK4's and A4's they typically came in.

Of course turboing a VR6 is the god level choice if you want to put some money into it. Both are great engines and deserve a place in the hall of fame!
If you're converting the drivetrain with 4-motion, the VR6 makes sense. Otherwise the engine is too nose-heavy for the lighter MK1, MK2 and MK3 platforms, which affects handling. If you don't have all-wheel drive, go with the 1.8T.
Team 1.8t... not that I don't love a 12v VR (had many in the past). Intercooler and charge piping was probably the biggest PITA when it came to my mk3.5 cabrio swap. Everything else was relatively simple. I just wish BFI still made the mk3 1.8t intercooler. Given the mk3.5 specific wiring as well as the price and availability of 12v VR, the 1.8t/02j and its simple tunability was the clear choice for me. Plus, based on the model year of my cabrio (2002) there were also registration and insurance hurdles in putting an older motor into the vehicle. I was faced with either a 24v or a 1.8t.
I put a AAA VR6 in my '01 Cabrio. The wiring took me about two weeks (it was my first swap), which was complicated by the different connector styles between the car and the engine. The car also passed an OBD2 emissions test using the 1996 AAA ECU. The donor car cost $600, which also provided the transmission, Plus suspension, and a host of various Mk3 spares. Given my car previously had an automatic transmission, I didn't notice an increased nose heavy tendency after the swap. I think its handling is limited by its body moreso than anything else. There is a local curved highway offramp that I can only carve at about 55mph in my Cabrio, but my Mk7 will take it at 70mph easily. It's worth it for the drop top wookie noises though, and I like the sensation of drive by cable.

20vt 225 swap in my mk2 caddy and I love it. power is nice after a map, fmic and downpipe, but I'm with you on the sound. can't beat the sound of a vr6
I dig the vr6 sound , but I'm sure the 1.8t is cheaper to get a fair amount of power from. But if you want all the horsepowers(damn the cost) I'd think a vr6t is better. Best is still that 16vT after all these years, that's kinda mind blowing.
I'd say the 1.8/2.0t kits are the best bang for the buck so for a more budget friendly build go with the 4 banger, for performance peak the 2.5t is pretty much the king and for a badass cruiser you want that NA VR5/6 and turbo it if you want to make a statement. For sound alone its NA VR then 2.5t then 4 banger.
I currently have a stage 2 1.8t and I had a stage 2 12v vr6. If you want cheap reliable power 1.8t is the way to go. If you have deep pockets then vr6 is the way to go because you can get alot more power out of a vr6 but it will cost you a hell of alot more
It is hard to beat a cheap 12v turbo build. Currently running a 100% stock VR besides valvetrain and arp headstuds with a 6870 turbo in my MK2 with Haldex conversion 🤘
Yeah cause the metal intake manifold makes way more intake sound 💕 I had a 12v mk3 and added the abd metal intake pipe and a piece of 3" metal pipe in front of the MAF, it was deafening at WOT 😆
hard to beat the sound of a 12v. For a long time, a suitcase removed 12v corrado was the best sounding car I'd ever owned (until it was dethroned by a Mk4 R32)
I like vr6s but i absolutely hate working on them. I dont mind working on the 1.8t I own an 02 turbo s 1.8t bug. Its got a downpipe and a GIAC stage 2 flash. Its fun to drive, definitely not fast but its reliable and fun
Thanks for this. Am currently doing my mk4 swap(from 1.8t agu to 3.2) This answers all the questions I had, especially on the power delivery. Thank you
I’ve owned Mark II, III & IV cars and my GTI was a VR6 that I bought new (the display) out of the showroom. It was fast, but not quick if you take my meaning. But the car I want to do is just going to be for cruising around. I want to do a VR6 swap into a beetle, and I’m just not interested in plumbing a 2.0 car for a 1.8t intercooler and all the extra stuff that’s associated with it. Great video!
I only owned a 1.8t but ive drove plenty of VR6 from friends... As an ownership standpoint, 1.8t throws more headaches and odd ball issues, but with available tuning and aftermarket my 1.8t outshines all my friends as far as power and fun. But that damn wookie is cool.
As an A4 guy I was looking into the vr6 for more low torque because they are heavy cars but I may just stick with the 1.8t and finally go with a BT and a 2.0 crank. I've chewed through all the K04s and hybrid turbos and they just can't hang but hopefully a quality BT setup will satisfy my cravings. Otherwise I'm getting a 135i and starting all over with that.
I have a mk3 golf vr6 Highline sounds amazing I also have mk1 golf gti 1.8t 20v bam I like both I think for the mk1 golf 1.8t is probably The most popular swap here in UK
@@COMotorsports you guys are great! I have 2013 mk6 2.5 5spd... With a tune..but just want to let the people know the capabilities..and why there not doing more with the 07k✊💯
I have a built 1.8t, 4wd, sequential eshifter here in Europe and last summer on the Nürburgring I had to detuned it from 25psi down to 20psi. That's 550-500 whp. It was just too much power for that track and the car was hauling past pretty much anything on the track. Corner handling excellent.
U only have to smash the frame rail in if your using all stock mounts but there are swap mount kits for example what I just ordered from fabless manufacturing in Ontario Canada... for my 24v 2.8 into mk2 bolt in fixes the mounting angle and position...
Team 16vt....worked on them all and the VR or 07k will be in the next project. can't deny the call of the wookies. its about SPG (smiles per gallon) not MPG and I get to boost a friends 24v next season!
WOW!!! I own a 1.8T in a Passat and I’ve stage2 tune and I love it! I fool people all the time with my call in how fast it is all the time! Keep up the good work guys love your video’s!
I have an 01 Audi A4 1.8T and my son has a Mk4 Jetta VR6. Both of these vehicles are tuned and while his car sounds so much better than mine, I just blow his doors off. He doesn't really drive the way I do though. He absolutely loves both our cars and so do I!
I have owned a 1.8t modded to 240whp and a stock r32 (soon to be turbo). vr6 is better in most ways for me. they alluded to it in the video but torque steer on the 1.8t is heavy. Despite the 1.8t being faster accelerating, out of corners vr6 kills it. You simply cant get on power as fast as the steering fights you on power in the 1.8t. vr6 smoothness is not to be overlooked for sure. I know you can do things to counter the torque steer but that adds cost that should be considered as well. Mind you this was my (random internet guy) experience, take it with a grain of salt.
Maybe a video on 1.8t intercooler plumbing ideas and how to on those swap platforms would be sweet. Or maybe a business opportunity for someone to make some kits?
This video was great. Basically both engines are the best. I’d have to to say a caddy vr6 street car would be a great ripper. Had a mk4 vr6 for a while and would love that engine in a lightweight mk1
I got to go with team VR6 because me and my dad are going to swap a 2.8 vr6 that we got out of a B3 passat into my mk2 jetta gli and the VR6 is the best sounding engine ever created and nothing can change my mind about that lol
I'm team VR6... I have a 2008 Audi A3 8P 2.0T TFSI (chain driven) and a 2018 VW Passat GT 3.6L VR6...I love the VR6 and power delivery. Will definitely be looking into a VR6T swap into the Audi in the not so distant future!
I currently own a MK4 24v VR it is stock and dailyed a 2.6 1.8t for a while and i personally can say the 1.8t puts some nice power out being stock as well but i would take the VR all day the sound it just amazing and it’s so smooth and can definitely be worked up crazy if the money is there.
Late to the party, but I went through this exact debate with my MK4 wagon. I ended up going with a 3.2 VR (with future plan of turbo). If it were a Golf, I'd have stuck with the 1.8t. In my head, the biggest MK4 begs for wookie noises. Also kind of balances out with the extra weight in back, but we will see..... Your vids are always great to watch. Informative and inspiring. Thank you for the content.
Nothing like the n/a 12v vr6. If u keep the timing chains & guides up to date its bullet proof. Been a vdub guy since 1994 I'm 42 80s baby had mk1 mk2 mk3 mk4 mk5. Long live vr6
For drag racing, having that weight aft of the front axle helps to pull the front wheels down and keep the tires digging into the ground (pretty sure you were talking about this later on in the video). Even with an open differential, my MK3 VR6 could pull off some pretty exceptional launches on street tires because of this. I would absolutely opt for a VR6 turbo if I were building the car for drag racing. For any kind of circuit racing, I'd opt for the 1.8T for the weight balance of the car. As much as I loved my NA VR6 in my MK3, it was very noticeable when I pushed it deep into the corners as the car would understeer like a pig. I had a MK3 8v before the MK3 12v and it was remarkable how much faster I could go into and pull out of corners in that car.
I’ve built both 1.8t, all motor VR’s and boosted VR’s in various displacements and they each have their pros and cons. The best part about both is that you can obtain a complete roller with everything you need to at least get the basics of the swap started to whichever chassis you’ve chosen to use. The 1.8t swap is great if you want cheap and simple power that is basically ‘ready to go’ when bolted in. There is ZERO guesswork and you can basically install it all as a complete running unit and upgrade your compressor, tuning, and all the supporting mods whenever you want. If you don’t mind doing some fab work and trying different parts out along the way a boosted VR is a great choice as well. I mean the sound is phenomenal which everyone can probably agree with, not to mention the torque which has its own pros and cons alone because of the trans and axles. If you prefer a great all-motor swap the 12v AAA VR is the cats ass IMO. I built a ‘91 GLI with a built all-motor AAA with an O2A/ hydro to cable conversion, TDI 5th gear and a Quaife and I LOVED that car. It was rock solid reliable, and you could do around 80mph and be around 2,500rpm and get around 30mpg. Such a great highway cruiser. I threw some Cat cams, H.D. Autotech springs, titanium retainers, little bit of headwork (port match, blending, etc... as far as the 1.8T cars, the possibilities are endless. A decent setup is a KO3 sport, full 3” turbo back, decent sized core, nice tune, proper fueling mods- pump, injectors, short runner intake mani, etc and so forth.... the possibilities go on and on... this video is certainly helpful in choosing what folks are looking for in a build. A lot of really great info is shared here, and it’s a great service to us enthusiasts that love these cars. This channel rocks for sure!! Thanks for sharing this fellas!!😉👍🏻
Was shopping mk1 Audi TTs and I ended up getting a fairly clean and completely stock '05 3.2 Quattro DSG as my weekend car. I've always loved the sound and instant power of the Corrado SLC VR6 but those are hard to find in nice stock condition at a reasonable price. So to me this is the next best thing. I may do an ECU tune if it's CARB compliant and perhaps upgrade to a Borla exhaust. Love that motor!
I swapped a 1.8t in my daily Corrado 13 years ago. Did a 93 tune shortly after the install. I bought a 94 VR6 Corrado 4 years ago and absolutely love driving that car but definitely won't beat my daily Corrado, at least not until the turbo goes in. I would totally swap in a 1.8t again, best thing I did to that car and it rips. My wife's old 12v VR6 GTI could keep up a little better but still couldn't take the 1.8t.
Completely separate vehicle and functional requirement but I am considering an Atlas for towing an enclosed trailer and dirt bikes….of course two engines….VR6 or 2.0 litre Turbo….this discussion has me wondering now….I assumed VR6 would be the better motor and possibly more resilient over time / miles. Completely separate discussion and not likely one for this forum but a decision for me! Always appreciate your videos guys!
Always the VR6. The sound - specially the 12V - unbeaten. The 1.8t has it‘s benefits for sure, but it‘s just a 4cylinder with no soul. I have swapped both motors in different mk2, bot were nice.
GOOD INFO GUYS!! I have a 12v obd1 swapped 87 vanagone. Only mod is intake. LOVE the torque, it only gets better...however, rear engine, 5500lbs, stock gearing trans...hmmm. Now what?
I have an Audi S3 8L... I built a stroker 20v with a GT3582r making some 620hp (before it bent an IE uprated rod)... now have a 3.2 VR6 in running the same turbo (less power though for reliability)... 500hp at 1bar boost from really low down the rev range and over 400ftlbs flat to 7k limit... and of course the sound of a VR6 :) For me going VR6 was the best thing I have done to my car in the 13 years of owning it
I agree, however it's not the same when you put these engines in smaller chassis. The 1.8t in a 3000lb+ car is very lack luster down low, in fact there's no comparison to the VR in that case. Simply due to what it's trying to lug around. Put those engines in a 1000lbs lighter car and you're experience would be quite different. For example if I had to choose between a 1.8t or VR in a MK4, A3, A4, whatever... it would be VR every time. Put it in a lighter chassis and things become a lot different.
@@COMotorsports very true... that said I would happily have a Mk2 Golf with an NA VR6 (12v or 24v) in it... I ran the 3.2 VR NA in the S3 for a couple of years before finally fitting the turbo... its a little lack lustre power wise for such a heavy car :) Loving the channel and your work guys... keep it up
I developed the front mount intercooler for the MkII back in the early 2000’s for Futrell Autowerks when I did my 1.8t swap in 2000. I still have the plans for it.
@@COMotorsports the cadd / pdf drawings somewhere. My original prototype (still in my car to this day) was built by turbonetics if I recall. Running an AEB swap with ABA 2L accessories with functioning AC.
Personally I went 20v for my mk1 rabbit , just because I'll be auto cross racing and weight distribution Is a must. Thanks guys for this awesome comparison video.
I've got an Auq 1.8t an Arl 1.9 diesel and the 3.2 vr6 all sat in their respective original mk4.s. All are stock bar an exhaust on the 32 and to be honest there's not that much in it but that sound IS the difference! 🤘
1.8t FTW!!! I have b5 avant with bigturbo build but im already searching for the next build and im debating on vr6 swapping my b5 s4 or going with c4 s4 I5 20vt
Not one of the motors on discussion but me personally like 16VG60 and I’ve had vr6 & 1.8T Mk1 it out performs all these motors on a stock platform. And with bolt ons I believe it still out performs all keeping in mind that the 1.8T keeps its k03 / k04 Dave you should do a challenge on this😁 I’d be in with the oldest motor 16VG60 as far as the sound from a VR love it! But I prefer the whistle/wine from a blower on a engine. Guess I’m just old🤣 #allgreatmotors #lovethischannel
Excellent video and it is a common argument. The solution have one of each at least lol. I love both engines and wouldn’t be upset with either option in my MK1-3!
I agree so that's what i did. Auq 1.8t Arl 1.9d and of course the 3.2 vr6. Don't tell the other 2 but the diesel is the best of both worlds apart from that sound 🤘
@@COMotorsports 🤣👍 seriously though Darkside Developments can work wonders with the old tractors! I'm all stock so don't know about tuning but there's not much in it from factory
I know off-topic, but at a certain power level (450 whp? maybe even less?), a VR6 build is going to start to be noticeably a lot more streetable than a 1.8T build. Even with a stroker 1.8T, getting a GT30 turbo lit is going to take a relative minute, especially as you start going big port head/cams/intake manifold that all shift the power up. At the drag strip, 1/2-mile, etc, where you're in your powerband all the time, none of that matters. But on the street, the "no replacement for displacement" saying is 1000% true imho. As an extreme example, there's a chasm-sized difference in the smoothness and linear power delivery of a 500+ hp 6-liter V8 vs a 500+ hp 2-liter. The latter can become a real chore to drive on most anything but an open highway.
I disagree with the last part of that, let me show you some dyno graphs of the r32 turbo vs a hybrid mk7r. Those things are making boosted VRS look silly right across the board.
Hi, two engine different, for me, vr6 the best song, 1.8T most power easy. Or you have TDI ( injector pump) who have most power easy. Very good video I like it !
My golf mk4 swap from 1.6 to 1.8t with audi auq engine and i am happy with that until right now from 2003 i have it as new car!i am not sell it ,is the best engine ever made from vw audi group
Thankyou for adding that last bit about the 24 valve vr6 im glad to see it came out on top. i just purchased a 2009 3.2 a3 hoping to boost it, wondering if I should go turbo or supercharger.
I would not waste my time or money doing a supercharger. You WILL want more and the SC will have you starting all over again because you can only get so much out of it. A simple turbo setup will make more than a decent SC setup.
Love the sound of a VR6. Turbo 4 cylinders are badass though! Bought my Mk 7 1.8 (2016 Golf S) about two and half years ago and brought it to my buddy's house - he's got a 2015 Civic Si. He thinks my car pulls harder - his HP is my torque, my HP is his torque...
12v sounds better than anything period. Ive had a 12v Mk2 swap and it was fun in a straight line , had a couple mk2 ABA swaps theyvwere fun on the backroads. If i ever get another mk2 it will have an ALH swap (i will never own a VW without one again). I like cracking down the backroads and the VR is a sloppy pig so i would go with 1.8t if i had to chose one of the two from the video. Both great engines though. ....i did not have to modify the frame rail whith my VR swap. Some do though
Iv got a vr 12v in a polo and love it but I also own another engine in a Ibiza that I feel is a competitor the 2.0 16v gti great as stock but easy to turbo and make good power
What about cost comparison between the 12v and 1.8T swaps also? I also know there is so much more information out there about the 12v swap vs the 1.8T swap I feel.
1.8t much cheaper as it's almost "complete". All you need is injectors, a bigger turbo and a matching manifold to make decent power. When it comes to turbo vr6 it takes quite a bit of fabrication or you will have to pay big money for pre-made parts.
I just completed a 12V VR6 swap on my Mk2 Jetta. It cost me around 8k CAD, but I had the engine completely rebuilt, and also did MK3 fuel tank and G60 Corrado front brakes at the same time.
They're both cool swaps. Whichever one you like better is the right choice. If you live in California it's basically impossible to "legally" get a mk2 1.8t on the road, which I realized after I had one mounted in my mk2 with g60 mounts. The 12v can be done with the mk3 gas tank bolting right in and the simpler emission setup from the mk3 vr6.
Not so sure about that. I have a 81 Caddy that has a 97 aba motor in it and I'm exempt from smogging it meaning i can take it back to a diesel or any other motor I want and not worry about smogging anymore. I believe the current motor was approved by a referee but since it is now exempt I'm not sure I need to take it to a referee again, do you know? I hope not because I also have a 04 gti with the 1.8t awp in it that I'm about to swap into my 81 hopefully, any advice would be much appreciated , thanks.
@@lightseek88 If it's originally a diesel car you can put whatever you want in it, sort of, the state still assumes it's a diesel so you don't have to smog it. But if you're racing it around and get pulled over they can "ref" you and it won't pass
Just got a 2000 a4 1.8t quattro manual. Was debating on a vr6 swap or just rebuild with forge internals. But now i think its safe to say forge internal with ko4 and run a safe 300-350 and will be perfect for a fast daily driver.

I currently have a stage 2 1.8t and I had a stage 2 12v vr6. If you want cheap reliable power 1.8t is the way to go. If you have deep pockets then vr6 is the way to go because you can get alot more power out of a vr6 but it will cost you a hell of alot more
How much we talking I have a 1.8 2016 vw sport and I want to maybe build it but I like the sound of a vr6

Definitely cool in that chassis as the bark doesn't match the bite.

Interesting, glad it helped.

Now put both of those engineers in 1000lb lighter cars and the 4cyl weak points go away.
Mind you this was my (random internet guy) experience, take it with a grain of salt.
after posting i realized it might be the awd of the r32 that ended the torque steer issue and this whole point might be irrelevant.

Late to the party, but I went through this exact debate with my MK4 wagon. I ended up going with a 3.2 VR (with future plan of turbo). If it were a Golf, I'd have stuck with the 1.8t. Nothing like the n/a 12v vr6. If u keep the timing chains & guides up to date its bullet proof. Been a vdub guy since 1994 I'm 42 80s baby had mk1 mk2 mk3 mk4 mk5. Long live vr6
You need to give a modified MK7 R a chance.
I agree with you on all accounts really. 👍

My wife's old 12v VR6 GTI could keep up a little better but still couldn't take the 1.8t.
yep, unless you drive both, it's just all talk.
The Atlas only has a 5000lb towing capacity so you're not towing to much with it if that's your goal.
Always the VR6. The sound - specially the 12V - unbeaten. The 1.8t has it‘s benefits for sure, but it‘s just a 4cylinder with no soul. I have swapped both motors in different mk2, bot were nice.

For me going VR6 was the best thing I have done to my car in the 13 years of owning it
I agree, however it's not the same when you put these engines in smaller chassis.
I ran the 3.2 VR NA in the S3 for a couple of years before finally fitting the turbo... its a little lack lustre power wise for such a heavy car :)

Those things are making boosted VRS look silly right across the board.
completely disagree. 2.0l bottom end, g25-660 you can see 400ft.lb @3700rpm(roughly 18psi)

We agree as well.
I think the 1.8t can be done much cheaper, the kicker is the fab work required for intercooler piping.
1.8t much cheaper as it's almost "complete". All you need is injectors, a bigger turbo and a matching manifold to make decent power.
When it comes to turbo vr6 it takes quite a bit of fabrication or you will have to pay big money for pre-made parts.
@@Robertas_Grigas and software, intercooler, clutch, exhaust.... Lol
What you mean legally
@@JR-ov6oe Engine swaps have to get approved through the Bureau of Automotive Repair in California and use all emissions equipment from donor vehicle.
Not so sure about that. I have a 81 Caddy that has a 97 aba motor in it and I'm exempt from smogging it meaning i can take it back to a diesel or any other motor I want and not worry about smogging anymore. @@lightseek88 If it's originally a diesel car you can put whatever you want in it, sort of, the state still assumes it's a diesel so you don't have to smog it. But if you're racing it around and get pulled over they can "ref" you and it won't pass
