  • Did you know that the BMW 840ci, 540i and 740i have an embarrassing 0-60MPH acceleration of somewhere between 7.1 and 7.4 seconds? It's a bit sad that they accelerate no quicker than a 118i M-Sport with the tiddly 4-pot engine!
    My E31 840ci does it in 6 seconds - and this video is all about the things that increase performance, and those that completely messes up engine performance!
    This is Part 1 of a three part series - today we look at popular upgrades that LOSE power!

    A few misconceptions about the inlet manifold there - the M60 and non-VANOS M62 share the same inlet manifold runner size. The early M60 inlet manifold have the trumpets which improve low end torque however these were removed from the design later on due to the risk of them falling off. The M62TU VANOS engine has the reduced runner size inlet manifold and this is proven to make less top end power but does benefit mid-range alongside the VANOS cam control. The M62 / M60 inlet manifold swap is a worthwhile swap for the M62TU if you use kickdown (or have a manual car) often and make use of the powerband above 4k, and means the V8 pulls strongly all the way to the limiter where a M62TU falters above 5k. The reason the 4.0s were lacking in torque was partly because of the inlet, partly because of the lack of displacement compared to the 4.4 but crucially, it was because they ran much more aggressive cams than the 4.4. The 4.4s run much milder cams, which benefit the mid-range. On dynos the 4.0s are seen to make the highest peak BHP figures compared to all variants of the M60 / M62 engines. I've had all three variants, the M60B40, M62B44 and M62B44TU and the above characteristics are definitely reflected in the way that they drive. In the US, DINAN sold "uprated" inlet manifolds for the M62TU cars which were actually just rebranded M60B40 manifolds. Running the M60 / NVM62 manifold with N62B50 throttle body, 4" maf housing, M62B44 exhaust manifolds, a good exhaust system with X-pipe and a re-flashed ecu can see figures of 330bhp from the M62TU engine.

      Yepp, going from 4.0 to 4.4 and making same power but higher torque with different manifold is probably all you need to know. Im guessing bmw did it so it would be a bit quicker in everyday driving ( lower rpms) but if you have a manual you probably like to rev so

      Factor is with a cold air intake. I’ve run 0 to 60 with and without the air cleaner on. Absolutely no difference. This is not the choke point of the intake system

      I remove snorkels because I'm a front end noise guy (also the engine cover, and the plastic plate behind the headlight in my E34 540i, to reduce under bonnet temps)
      Couple of very very stubborn plastic tabs, one you can get at through a cutout, the other is on the inside of the airbox and needs a big screwdriver and a lot of swearing to nullify the 25+ years worth of hardening
      On my M52 in the E39 touring too, got rid of the snorkel and a bizarre piping that snaked from the corner under the LH headlight, across the front behind the bumper, and opens in front of the aux fan, facing backwards. ?!??
      Clearly I don't understand enough to understand what the hell the point of that is, but it sounds much better with it off and both the economy figures and butt dyno don't notice any degraded performance

    Thank you for your expertise & for taking the time to explain it all so thoroughly Timm !!! Especially , thank you for the easy tip of sliding washers onto the M62's intake manifold bolts in order to eliminate potential manifold gasket leaks . I have a quick question regarding 1 thing you mentioned in this vid : you said that a Zionsville electric fan will lead to power loss/excessive electric draw in older BMW's ; but what about just their aluminum shroud with attached aluminum expansion tank - could that item improve heat dissipation ?

    Hi Tim, what oil would you recommend using for the 740i ? Does it make a difference ? Also what's your opinion on changing the transmission fluid and filter on the ZF-5hp and how often would you change? thanks for your information! Saved me buckets of cash!

      Transmission fluid should changed at 100k, the evey 50k. Check my video on oil and filter change on the 840ci, that will be the right oil!

    Great video as always! I know that the S62 engine in the E39 M5 gains a lot of power with a set of performance headers. Is that a worthwhile modification for the M62 engine as well?

    I love the sound your car made when merging from the slip way. Was that achieved by drilling the internals of the rear silencers? I have a 99 740 with the TU engine. Totally stock engine and exhaust.

    When we're talking about a cold air intake, the Dinan Cold Air Stage 1 intake Cone for these motors was obviously not considered. Then again, it was developed in California where technology does not travel backwards.

    Hahaha, yeah I always have a chuckle when people use those cone filters and stuff them in the engine bay, usually right near or above the headers, and claim that they now have a "cold" air intake... It really doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out that moving the opening from the front of the car (usually behind the bumper, which is also very handy for mitigating water being sucked in, in the wet) to the engine bay where all the heat is, is a dumb idea. I always maintain that especially on BMW's, the team of engineers are pretty clued up, and messing with stuff that didn't come standard with some variant or trim level of the same model and engine spec, is inviting disaster to the table, especially cheap, off-the-shelf aftermarket rubbish. I think I know what you did to get the performance though, but not going to spoil it for the rest who might not, if I'm right, the number 15 might be involved somewhere ;).

    After you've had enough of the stupid viscous clutch fans throwing their blades through your hood and radiator, you will happily switch to a much safer electric fan. The viscous fan moves with the engine, as the engine and transmission shifts around on the mounts with varying torque output, and with a failed engine mount it will impact the shroud and send blades flying.
    Or the water pump bearing goes, or the clutch seizes up while you're at high revs and suddenly you have a 5000 rpm death weapon under the hood. Switching to a lower temp old fashioned thermostat (highly recommended for engine life) causes more hot coolant to circulate in the radiator and actually triggers the fan clutch more, it's like driving a big truck around - kills throttle response too.
    When it's really hot outside and you're idling, the viscous fan doesn't move enough air at low RPM, so an electric fan is better for that too. But it won't help fuel efficiency, that much is true.

    I am sorry Timm but regarding viscous fan you are wrong. Motor trend tested different fan setups on the dyno and results tell different story. And that is for old V8 big blocks with old alternators. Check out these tests. Viscous fan can take up to 20bhp of engine power (at 300bhp at the crank) that is why it is not used anymore. And that is why track cars delete it.
    Another thing with electric fan retrofit it make sense only together with 88c thermostat to keep things cooler under the hood. Much better than the 117c thermostat and viscous fan.
    Intake manifold upgrade makes sense only with a tune. Otherwise it robs power. With tune and exhaust it makes a significant change, not by itself.
    Road tests have margin for error - different temperature, fuel, different road. When it comes to measure power upgrades dyno is the way. Not the butt dyno :)

      Hello Pabloel, thanks for your comment, I always like hearing alternative views. I take your points, but have to say that the viscous fan is just freewheeling when at anything other than idling. As soon as you get airflow from the car moving through the air there is zero load.
      The M60 and M62 are old, inefficient engines and really need the power from the viscous fan to get the heat out when idling - more modern engines such as the N62 (as I have in my 650i) don't need that much cooling (in relation to the older V8's) and are perfectly happy with the electric main fan.
      However, an electric fan is fine in the older V8's if you just pootle around - but for getting the performance from the engine it needs a powerful fan, and that doesn't include an electric one

      The M62TUB thermostat automatically reduces engine temperature when pushing - but, look at it the other way, 108C saps engine performance and increases wear, so changing will help those - but not performance!

      @@TimmsBMWRepairsandInformation Lower engine temperature translates into lower inlet and automatic transmission temperatures, which can affect ECU control and "uncut" power. If the car is equipped with a factory clutchfan, the high temperature on the original thermostat also causes power loss through the clutch engagement.

    You can remove the viscous fan without adding an electric fan. The aux fan is sufficient. And you remove the risk of the viscous fan exploding, as they are known to do.

      You can't rely on the auxiliary fan unless you drive like a 90 year-old, put any effort in and the aux fan will not save the day!

The "kids" still don't get it. They think slurpy noises means faster. Sounds like you might be too busy on Part II to advise me on why my second E38 I'm building has a weird knocking at the torque converter area.I should upload a video of it.

    This guv is misleading on the pod filter and ass backwards about the B40 manifold upgrade and here's why. Everyone knows a pod filter has to be encased in a cold air box (as was fleetingly shown in the video amongst the incorrectly fitted pods). Secondly, the bigger manifold may sacrifice a little torque but it gives more power in the rev range and that's great in this application because the last thing this car needs is more torque..... it is notorious for spinning the wheels setting off the traction control. I have the B40 manifold and a K&N air filter in the standard airbox and my e39 is far quicker. It hits a sweet spot around 3800rpm and takes off like a rocket, chalk and cheese. You soon learn to deal with the changed torque curve.

    Regarding the cone filters: You just need to find yourself a cone filter that has greater surface area at a more direct route than the stock unit and place the cone down in the cutout where the fog light would normally be.
    You need to think about what makes a good intake: Resonance, surface area, cool inlet location...otherwise it's no wonder you'll make less power

    No much room to improve performance on an atmo engine. I don't know this Engine in particular but you make good remarks. All this accompanied by an acute but nice British accent. After watching several videos of yours, my guess is you are or have been working in the Engineering industry, don't you?

      nonsense! these motors (4.4) are choked at the factory and at a relatively low cost you can increase the power by up to 60hp including final software tuning

    If that car was hot, and the fan was locked because it locks up if the car heats.. please dont put the hand on that fan, it will brake you re fingers off !!! ... and then when it is locked, it take some feelable power, 5-10 hp tested.... so PLEASE DON T TRY TO STOP THE FAN WHEN THE CAR IS HOT !!!!!!!

    Beautiful car. Beautiful cat also. I will have to wait for the performance secret. The N62 on your 650I puts out more horsepower than BMW claims. Great for insurance. A properly tuned N62TU with a fully functional DISA, high octane gas, and cold ram air when traveling at high speed will produce in excess of 400 horsepower. Increasing the tune and rev limiter to 7000 RPM can yield more horsepower at the expense of destroying AC compressors and shortening the life of water pumps. Not practical for reliability though.

    Do not listen to his advice. Only thing he right about is air filters, and that depends on intake set up you doing. There is reason bmw started using electric fan. Also you here feel drag when giving it the beans. Big whoosh til clutch gives suddenly your car starts moving around 4k just long enough to shift be stuck with viscous fan drag again. Did electric fan conversion while ago. 3 outcomes. 1 no noise, 2 car finally moves, last gained 1mpg. And intake manifold really? Forums are flooded with dynos before and afters.... My man you legitimately saying proven info with tested facts is wrong....

    But this video doesn't explain a single thing to increase the performance of an M60/M62. A rare misfire from Timm, and 24 minutes wasted.

      Very nice information and good told. Could you also give tips for a x5 4.8 2006. It runs like brutus. Muscular with a dark sound. 360 hp and 490 nm. Love it much. Could you gave tips for more performance for this kind car. I,m already impressed for peogram handling and power. But fine tuning is mij hobby.

      for TU motors, intake manifolds with m60 (large runners)
      Exhaust manifolds with m5 (without catalysts)
      cold air intake - larger diameter, heat shielded and insulated
      change of position of intake temperature sensor
      conversion to an electric fan (best mod in these engines)
      custom software modification (up to 25hp increase)
      optional gearbox software update (alpina)
