The E39 is undoubtedly one of the best proportioned, designed, and engineered sedans produced. The 540i variant (with an M Tech package), possibly the best combination of performance/design/reliability/value. Awesome car! It is definitely on my wish list of cars to own.

It's closer to 300 bhp. Probably underrated to keep a distance in the books to the 7 series V12 engine

One of the most beautiful creations by BMW. The E39 is a fantastic piece of German engineering, luxury and class! That 4.4L V8 is amazing, the interior looks great for it's time and the styling is just out of this planet! Germans surely perfected their greatest creation ever!

To everyone wondering in the comments, yes these are underrated from factory. Factory states 286hp (engine) and 440Nm of torque. Real numbers are around 305hp (engine) and 440-460nm of torque. Also acceleration times should be faster in a manual one since the older automatic gearboxes tend to eat power + shifting speed is slower if you can properly shift a manual. I hope this helps!
