I thought of buying some deadblow hammers, but I'm closer to the other side of tooling up. Anyway, my buddy, Tommy Lee, gave me a 2# copper hammer which has served me well for decades. WhenTommy was still with us, he was a machinist at a steel mill. The first thing he said when he found out I was buying an engine lathe was, "You'll need a copper hammer." He was right. They were so much like bubble gum in his shop, they cast the copper and handled them right there. Thanks, Tommy, wherever you are!
WOW! Even my wife made a comment (we watch you on our living room tv) on the wooden handled screwdriver build! VERY well done! We enjoy your channel because you're steeped in tradition, Patriotism, excellent craftsmanship and the era we grew up in. Thank you very much for the enjoyment you bring to all of us.
Wow! I visit Dave Engels every Friday. I watched the boxed wood giveaways but only today am I putting it all together. Glad you won, I think I entered but you can actually use those nice pieces of ash, poplar and other hardwoods. Today's project looked great and I know it meant something to you.
It’s always cool to turn junk and scrap, that still has some good useful parts left, into something awesome! It’s even better when you have some kind of sentimental attachment to it. :)
Oh man, that screwdriver is beautiful. I'm not sure I understood what you meant by the arrow shaft part. But I'll go re-watch. Favorite line: "Oh yeah, that's right, it's red. It's probably not wood."
Very close to Hurwood screwdriver. Love the faux ferrule! The fun thing is you can go to estate sales and garage sales and find vintage quality screwdrivers for a dime or quarter but eBay has discovered they bring $20 dollars!
Your knowledge and infectuous enthusiasm are so appealing. Thank you John for all your hard work in putting these videos together. See you on Wednesday. Jim
Crafterman I was blown away by that bird house...😳😳 Then the screwdriver just pushed it over the top...my...my...you are not just a iron head but a TRUE Crafterman... LOL...stay safe Mr.Crafterman...😁
Yesterday I picked up a large Rosco square shank screwdriver with a translucent handle from a thrift shop for 99 cents, it had a broken tip, in the past I would had reground it on my bench grinder but I used the ScoutCrafter technique and did it using my angle grinder, wow, that works better, much easier to control the grind. I feel good about saving that old tool, I like it so much I can't wait for the patina to grow on the new ground area...LOL
Ash is a very underated wood. I think it's because it has a coarse grain. But it also has intelocking grain and that makes it extremely durable. Roy Underhill claimed it was the prefered wood for wagon wheel hubs. You know, the center part that could split. Using Ash it is apparently far less likely to split. They actually used different woods in those old wagon wheels. Each being chosen for specific qualities. BTW we are losing Mountain Ash by the boatloads here due to the Emerald Ash Borer. We used to have piles of free wood chips and they are not even doing that any more to make sure the wood diseases don't travel as much.
Maybe wood paneling is makin' a comeback on our vehicles, tv's and appliances too 😂 Great job on the screwdriver. Clear grain ash prize went to excellent use. Bout needed an extra long pin punch there. In a way it's an homage to Patty. Nice bit set 👍 Still need 5/32" clutch drive on Holley Carburetor metering plates.
I would've sworn you were going to save that bit of acetate handle! I hear people passing just before or after their retirement all the time sadly. I really try to take a lesson from that, have fun now as much as possible every day and not only make plans for someday. Thank you, great fabrication video!
You gotta get you an engraving set so you can add Made in USA & ScoutCrafter. It would be so rare and Magdad would wear out his old reference books looking for history on the ScoutCrafter Mfg Co. Nice job SC. When I grow up I want to be just like you. Thanks for the fun. 🤠
Thanks for the heads up on the hammers. I just got home from TSC where I picked up the hammers and went into the clearance section and scored a 3 pack of gloves (2 welding and 1 mechanics type) for $10, normally $20. We are going to give them a good workout tomorrow.
Man that turned out really nice! And am I the only one who was pausing the video and then going over to Amazon to find those tools? In my browsing I see that there is a ratcheting version of that Malco nut driver.Great recommendations!
Nice job, that's a very nice project indeed. I agree that Ben is doing some great projects too. I only follow you, 357Magdad & Ben, for some reason I just cant get into any other channels, always looking forward to you guys putting up new content. 🏴🇬🇧
Hey John, Great screwdriver, I love the idea of the bolt in the end of it. It would work good as a striker cap too. Well I beat you to it. I bought the Malco handle from Amazon on Feb 5th. lol - Great little handle. I got tired of the magnetic pop-in handles and found the Malco and had to have one. Wish I got one years ago but..... - Later
John, i love that screwdriver in my opinion that's one of the most beautiful screwdriver that you have made , i do have a thing for wood handles but that's just my opinion
Love that screwdriver. Amazing handle. I have a smaller set of bits like that that I used at the hospital. I worked on a lot of machines that had a lot of security screws. It was very valuable to have. That set would be even better. Stay safe and healthy my friend. Thanks
What a great screwdriver that is now, lovely piece of wood for the handle, worth the late finish on day 1, nearly half hour between the two, fantastic!!
NICE fix and I watched these 2 backwards. I even got a dead blow hammer and I have used it. Not as much as the 3# but I have used it. GBWYou and happy monday!
I'm glad you enjoyed my half restoration! Thanks for the inspiration!
Your screwdriver came out beautiful!

Someone needs to call you in for a hoarder intervention If you saved the original cutoff yellow plastic from that screwdriver. LOL!😂

The screwdriver looks great! That wood grain dead blow hammer... I am still smiling about that!
"lets throw this out".... proceeds to store handle scrap just in case you might need it
I thought I would pass out when he said THROW IT AWAY 😄
My sentiments exactly 😳
Oh man, that screwdriver is beautiful. I'm not sure I understood what you meant by the arrow shaft part. But I'll go re-watch.
Favorite line: "Oh yeah, that's right, it's red. It's probably not wood."
Nat Geo has Shark Week, Scoutcrafter has screwdriver week!
😂🤣😂 “it’s red so it’s probably not wood”. Perfect. I can imagine someone finding this screwdriver 100 years from now and trying to identify the maker.
That screwdriver came out great! I love watching Engel’s.
I'm glad to see I'm not the only crazy retired guy up at 2am in the shop.
A new holiday, Ash Monday. You honored your friend with a beautiful screwdriver. The handle looks great and a perfect shape!

WOW!!! That screwdriver turned beautiful!
The hours you put in on our behalf. Huge thumbs up for you
The wood grain on the ball peen makes it look like authentic simulated wood . 🙂. Great job on the screwdriver.
How do you stay up so late??... that is absolute and unwavering commitment to the hobby!!
I worked nights for the last 16 years of employment and now I am used to those hours!
For what it's worth... I think you're quite normal working in your shop at 2 am:)
I'm on the fence with gunstock but it's the perfect color here. One of your best creations.

S.C. That is a true work of art !!!!!!! Beautiful Job !!!!!!!!!
That was fantastic! Came out awesome! Thanks for sharing, ScoutCrafter!
If the handle had been black and fluted it could have passed for a Stanley Hurwood. Great job!
That screwdriver deserves your stamp on it somewhere! Beautiful job.

Not sure I'm buying that you threw the rest of that handle out................Always hate hearing someone dies shortly after they retire.
Love that screwdriver man. Screwdrivers are one of my favourite projects. You can upgrade a cheap screwdriver quick by giving it a beautiful handle.
Looks like a beautiful piece of furniture. Thanks ScoutCrafter
You just gotta like the words CHROME VANADIUM The wood handle looks so Nice
My dad once made a screwdriver from a broken turn signal stalk off of a Chevy Monza. Had plenty to choose from. He worked at GM Lordstown
What a great idea!!!!! 😃👍
You gotta get you an engraving set so you can add Made in USA & ScoutCrafter. It would be so rare and Magdad would wear out his old reference books looking for history on the ScoutCrafter Mfg Co.
