      I recently worked on a movie set for a big Hollywood production. After filming was finished, 100 dumpsters we’re ordered to haul away full pallets of plywood, plexiglass, furniture etc. Im currently working on a construction site in a major city on a 26 story building, With 4 to 6 large dumpsters a day being hauled off to the city dump. Not all but most are filled with recyclable wastes..... wiring, plumbing, wood, and so on. The rules for U and I are different from Hollywood or large corporations “ Do as I say, not as I do “. I always thought that the square wooden handled screw drivers were pretty good. Seems all the old guys had them. Even cheap stuff from back in the day was better than some "good" stuff now.

    • @sixtyfiveford
      @sixtyfiveford  3 роки тому +13

      I have tons of screwdrivers so if they don't have a brand name I generally assume the steel is pretty cheap and just toss them into the junk screwdriver box. The good Stanley (and others) wood handled ones engrave the brand name on the metal collar. I would choose these cheaper wood handled ones or even acetate handles over the cheap abs plastic handled ones.

    • @LD9user
      @LD9user 3 роки тому +11

      I think as long as you dont go crazy and start hammering on the end or prying too much, the wooden handle drivers work exceedingly well. I was gifted a set when I was 16. That was 42 years ago and I still have most of them (broke a couple over the years).

    Great video! Little tip: since it's often so easy to get the shaft out of the handle - if I'm making an awl from a screwdriver, I like to take the shaft out and chuck it in a drill to grind the point. You gat a perfectly centered point pretty quick. Almost like a little portable lathe. (Also a great way to polish any round stock including screws and bolts).

    • @MaryAnnNytowl
      @MaryAnnNytowl 2 роки тому +1

      @@Feuerspray31 a file? Why would you use a file? Use a grinder, like he does in the video!
      I mean, if the files are all you have, I guess you could stick the file into a vise and clamp it down really good, then run the drill with the screwdriver shift in it, and hold it against the file. Maybe?

    • @MaryAnnNytowl
      @MaryAnnNytowl 2 роки тому +1

      This won't work with some of them, as they have little tabs on the end that may be so far down you can't put enough of the shaft into the drill chuck for safety. Well, won't work unless you grind off those tabs, anyway. I prefer not to do that, as (assuming they have a plastic handle, as any I've seen have tabs do) they can be heated up and the handle put back onto the red-hot shaft with the tabs a different place than the were before.
      Then again, you'd have to heat that steel up quite a bit in the first place to melt the handle enough to knock it off of the shaft. So, that style might not be such a great candidate for this, after all. So, I'm back to this won't work for that kind, LOL!

    With a Dremel rotary tool, you could re-grind a Phillips into an E-clip remover; and a flat blade into an E-clip installer. Those 4-in-1 screwdrivers are good for that (Small and Large in one tool). Sure beats using the wrong tool for the wrong job. If you magnetize it, it's even better.
    You could also cut threads onto the shank and use the handle as a drawer-pull, or accessory to some other tool.
    When all else fails, You could always cut off the flat blade and use it as a wedge to tighten hammer-handles.

    Probably too simple but as a former service plumber, I have a “digging screw driver” which is used for what it sounds like. It’s a flat head that helped me dig around pipe so I could just get the job done instead of shoveling out a bigger hole so I can use the shovel underneath the pipe. I just chip the dirt away with the screw driver after I have gone as far as I can with my shovel and expose the pipe all the way around to sweat or glue on a repair.

    Great video!!!! Love your channel--one of the very few I have subscribed to. Some other uses: (1) Hammer a hex bit holder (like for a drill) into the handle and presto--a new driver for all hex bits. Can do long or stubby. May need to enlarge the hole, but leave it tight so it won't turn in the handle. Can also heat an old nail and use it to soften the he hole in the handle a little first, or put in some epoxy first; (2) hammer an allen wrench (hex key) into a small handle for often used sizes, such as set screws in tools, electrical connectors (also provides insulation as added bonus), or even the handle on the storm door that keeps getting lose; (3) cut off the end of the free paint can openers from the box stores and hammer either end into the handle to make either a paint can opener or a bottle opener; Hammer an often used drill bit into the handle to make a hand drill. The uses are endless.

He was very helpful doing things like that. One time I had to go up on the roof to install a new antenna. After I was up there for a bit I turned around and there he was! He had climbed the ladder all by himself, thankfully he did not fall. I like taking the small pocket flathead screwdrivers and making little pry bars. I carry one in my pocket every day. It's great for unplugging those little pesky electrical connections or prying off fuel line. I also make punches out of the Phillips screwdrivers after they break. I have one with a metal end on the handle that's made to be hit with a hammer. I have a few homemade tools. I just made a crankshaft holder today out of a piece of 1/4 aluminum flat bar. It worked great. Love your videos. I'm a Big FORD guy too

      JB Weld is very tenacious. Can withstand impact AND will glue handle up. ( within reason. Don’t try to kill your glued chistles with a Plumb hammer)
      My refurbished chistle handles ( 3 of them) have lasted 20 years. But I have to glue them up again because they have become loose.
      ❌ tip: JBWeld also works great on eyeglass frames. I’ve got a pair of glasses from 1990 that I’ve glued up 6 times. Still going. Like the energizer bunny.

    I've ground them like lathe tools then heated and bent ends 90 degrees to get into internal features. Really handy for cleaning o-ring grooves in motorcycle brake calipers (end ground flat with relief angles then bent at 90) and also cleaning out larger threads in alloy components (when ground at 60 degree angle) Often much easier than buying special sized taps or dies when threads are 'almost good' just a bit rusty or oxidised

    A superbly handy use for a #1 and #2 round shanked driver is to grind it like a hollow ground gunsmith bit but like this )( viewed from the side. That will grab the inside of brass carb jets without smearing them. I learned that trick from my now-deceased Vincent-restoring mentor who said it dates before WWII. It works better than any other jet screw design (and of course NEVER use a tapered style common screwdriver on brass or really on anything you care about except as a pry bar).
